Auctioneer’s Report (Will Alexander): All types good to sell, with the better end meeting a fast trade. Best of the Texels from DA Towell, Keighley, with his 2nd prize Shearling topping the day at £2400, Davids next best at £1500, whilst the first prize shearling from D&C Gray, Sel-kirk peaked at £1200. Plenty of better sorts £800-£1000, with the next bracket £500-700. The crossbred shearlings £680-£800 with the better sorts again dearer, topping at £1000 from RC Robinson, Harrogate. It was SC Walker of Cheshire who took all top spots in the Suffolk sec-tion, their best lamb at £550, another at £450, matched by Richard Hutchinson’s first prize lamb at the same price. Shearlings topped at £800 from the same home, with another at £650, matched by the first place shearling from Adam Brown, most sorts £400-£500. Auctioneer’s Report (Stephen Dennis): The Annual Sale of BFL rams was once again a strong trade. The pre-sale show was judged by Frank Kitching of Thresfield, Skipton who carried out his duties with diligence and expertise, awarding the Overall Champion Rosette to Bentham breeder Chris Hewitt for his shearling ram sired by Highberries Hotshot H1 out of a ewe by Smearsett G11 selling for £3200 to Messrs Hodgson of Kirkby Stephen. A large class of ram lambs saw the judge pick the best from the Kirby Redgate run later selling to £2400 whilst 2nd place lamb from Dunkenshaw sold at £1800 with Abbey White taking 3rd prize with a Ribblesdale M2 lamb selling for £2800. Top prices in both the shearling and lamb section came from the Smearsett flock of David & Robin Booth. A bid of £6000 from James & Simon Garth of Birk Knott secured the purchase of their best shearling ram by Smearsett B13 while James Hall of Darnbrook took home the best of their ram lambs by Smearsett J30 with a bid of £2800. Shearling rams averaged £697 up £17 on the year whilst ram lambs saw an increase of £100 on the year to level at £669.

Auctioneer’s Report (Will Alexander): Teeswater shearlings to £500 from Da-vid Waine whilst the best of the aged tups sold to £380 from J & M Whitfield, Wray. Best of the females from JM Jackson for her 1st place shearling to £220.

Auctioneer’s Report (Stephen Dennis): The Dispersal of the Highhills Herd of Pedigree Li-mousin Cattle from Kim, Linda & Richard Newburn of Halifax created plenty of interest. The herd established in 2015 boasted a high health status being both BVD and IBR accred-ited, monitored free of Leptospirosis and Risk Level 1 Johnes Status. The sale topped at £4100 (a new mart record) for Highhills Magic born 2016 with her April born heifer calf Highhills Sorcerer purchased by Nigel Binns of Stoke on Trent. The same buyer also taking home Highhills Misty (born 2016) with her heifer calf Highhills Snowflake (born April 2016) with a bid of £3800 and a successful bid of £3550 for Simse Jenny, a 2014 cow with her May born heifer calf Highhills Summer ensuring the top three lots all headed to Stoke on Trent. The 13 cows and heifers with calves at foot and back in calf to stock bull Elderberry Northerner averaged £2869. All four bulls forward found new homes. The senior bull Eld-erberry Northerner selling for £3200 whilst the three junior bulls on offer sold to £2150.

Auctioneer’s Report (Greg MacDougall): A large entry of 623 stirks were forward before a decent ringside of customers with several fit for numbers. Stronger wintering cattle good to place generally £800-£1100. A consignment of mainly Charolais steers and heifers from J Shaw, Wennington sold to £1085 with heifers to £1020. It was S & FM Heald, Broats Farm who topped the day’s sale at £1180 with a smart Limousin steer with JE Beresford close behind at £1150 with a tidy Lim x heifer. Younger stirks look the dearest things on the day with prices varying from £550-£750 depending on breed and quality. A varied trade for B + Ws but gener-ally selling well. Stronger sorts either side of £700 topping at £750 from PM & AM Ward, Docker, PW & DW Roskell’s monthly consignment to £705. Smaller end £520-£580. Next sale Tuesday 19th October which includes the 1st Sale of Suckled Calves.

Auctioneer’s Report (Will Alexander): Following last week’s entry of 176 it was good to have another 124 forward. Younger calves would be sharper on the week, with the older stronger sorts a similar trade. Nicely reared Angus Bulls £295-£340, with the strong sorts £400+, topping at £440 from John & Edward Fox, Quernmore. Heifers to £330 from the same home, with the stronger sorts £250+ and those younger £180-£220. Another lovely run of Hereford bulls out of Friesian Cows from The Booths regularly £300-£320 with their 7 topping at £330. Continental bulls to a top of £490 for strong weaned sorts from M & D Stable, others £440+, whilst younger milky calves £400-£425 with the next draw £340-£400, smalls £280-£300. A stronger heifer trade, saw a high of £500 again from the Sta-bles, a pair sold by Dave Harrison at £420, plenty of others £370+. Other Continentals to £425 for a Charollais bull from JH Towers & Son, Tunstall, and the top spot of the day to David Breaks with a Lim Bull at £545, and a Sim from Phillip Wood at £400. A stronger show of Friesian bulls saw the best £200+ topping at £230 from P&M Crackles, nice rear-ers £110-£135, with the next notch down £80-£90.

Auctioneer’s Report (Stephen Dennis): Feeding & cast cows remain a buoyant trade with plenty of com-petition ringside. B + W cows to 150p for well fleshed sorts and to 188p for overage heifers. A run of beef x fed cows from Andrew Rowlinson sold from 163p-173p grossing an average of £1150. A group of light-weight hill feeding cows sold from 110-135p. More cows required weekly.

Auctioneer’s Report (Greg MacDougall): Another nice entry of ewes were for-ward to the usual ringside of buyers. All classes on the whole selling at similar rates once again. Plain horned ewes look nicely sold with heavy and best bred sorts short of requirements. Topping the night’s sale was a Texel ram from EJ Ward & Sons realising £205. Pure bred ewes in general £140-£170 with heavy Suffolk/ CTLs £120-£140. Good selling types around £100. Smaller types £70-£90. Fleshy horned ewes £65-£75 with a few pens getting over £80. SBF ewes sold to £94.50. Medium sorts £45-£55 with plain £28-£40. A larger entry of 66 cast rams. Hill rams to £80 with heaviest CTL and Suffolk £130-£180. Lesser sorts £100-£120.

Auctioneer’s Report (Greg MacDougall): Helped with a better show of meat and weight, Bentham bucked the lamb trade with a much stronger trade than early week auctions. All classes keenly contested for with an overall market average of 228p being achieved. Best of the night was a heavy Texel x lamb from Esther Dennis of Farleton making £158 while RF Towers, Curwen Hill topped per kilo at 331.7p. Smartest of the lambs 280-320p with the smartest commercial types 250p+. Lambs weighing 45-50kg often £100-£108 with heavy £115-£125 with better butcher types £130-£140+. Mules in general 206-210p topping at 218.4p from RI Raw with JC Nelson, Bull n Cave topping at £113. A highlight of the night’s sale was the Annual Show & Sale for Masham Prime Lambs judged by Liam Broster. It was T & D Wright who took 1st prize with their pen scaling 51kg realising £119 with 3rd prize from the same home to £112.50. A & MA Wright took 2nd with their lambs making £112. Thanks to the judge and vendors for supporting.
