Thank you to all the families who attended our Bingo for Books event this week! A fun time was had by all, and hundreds of books were given away!

Parents of Fifth Graders — There is a note from the Wheeler Middle School Administration Team on page 3 of this newsletter about a Parent Orientation night coming up on May 8th. Check out page 3 for more information!

PARENTS OF THIRD GRADE STUDENTS: In March the IREAD-3 (Indiana Reading Evaluation and De-termination State Assessment) was administered to all 3rd grade students in Indiana.

IREAD-3 is a state-wide assessment that evaluates the foundational reading skills of students in grade three. The student report can be found by logging into RDS Parent Access and clicking the ‘Documents’ tab.

The attendance rate for this past week was 95%.

Our schoolwide attendance goal is 97%. Thank you for limiting voluntary absences and scheduling appointments outside the school day whenever possible!

Lunch Time Information from Our Cafeteria

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT Students with lactose intolerance are now considered eligible for disability accommodations. School Food Authorities must have either the medical statement signed by a health care provider with prescriptive authority or a written request from the parent/guardian to identify the student’s medical or other special dietary need that precludes the consumption of cow’s milk.

Please notify your cafeteria manager and school nurse if you would like your child to get this milk with their lunch. It will also be available ala carte for $1.00. The product will be Lactaid and will come in a 8oz. serving size.

Lunch Time Visitors Restaurant/fast food, carbonated drinks, or glass containers are not al-lowed. Parents may purchase lunch in the cafeteria for $3.30. This cannot come off the student's lunch account. We cannot accept check or credit card payments. It must be paid by cash. And since we do not always have change in our drawers, smaller bills are greatly appreciated. If we cannot provide proper change, than the remaining balance will be deposited into your student's lunch account. Another quick reminder to parents visiting for lunch, please, do not treat other students to food, snack, or ice cream items during your time in the cafeteria. Without proper parent permission, allergy knowledge, and other sensitivities to food choices, it is best to treat only your student. We love having you visit our cafeteria... we just ask you do it safely.

Lunch Time Money Please go online www.mymealtime.com to deposit lunch money or you can send a check in a labeled envelope with student first & last name. Mealtime online passcode is the student ID. Parents can find this number on the Parent RDS website, next to the student’s name on the sched-ule. Parents will use this number to set up the account. All students will receive a hot lunch regardless if the account is negative. No charging of any extras will be allowed. Please Note: All lunch money needs to be brought down in the morning before school, if not it will be deposited the next day.

Did you bring your lunch, but need a drink? Milk may be purchased, if you brought in a lunch from home. It cannot be charged on student lunch card if they have a negative balance. Milk cost is $0.40.

Heating up Lunches Our cafeteria does not warm up food, cook food or wash dishes brought from home. If we tamper with the food it becomes the liability of the cafe-teria. Please, if you are sending in hot food make sure it is in a thermos.

Would you like to Substitute in the Cafeteria? If you would like to be a sub in food services please call Pam Maloney at 662-6480. This is a great way to earn a little extra cash and be home with your children in the morning & afternoon.

Birthday Celebrations Birthday treats are always fun for your child to share with classmates. You may choose to purchase birthday tickets for your child’s class which will allow your child’s classmates to select a special treat from our “Birthday Choices” at lunch! Treats will be given out in our cafeteria. Call your cafe-teria manager, Mrs. “G” Sheppard to preorder & set your party up.

A Message from the Nurse

Please have your student(s) put an extra pair of clothes in their backpack or locker. The nurse does not always have all sizes available.

Regarding Taking Medication at School- Remember that ALL medications must be accompanied by doctor & parent notes. Otherwise the medication cannot be given at school. All medication must be in its original container. All prescription medication must have the correct information on the label. Also, no cough drops, or essential oils are allowed at school unless accompanied by doctor & parent notes. No child should be bringing medication to school in order to self medicate. Regarding Illness - Please keep all sick children home if they are running a fever of 100.0 or above, vomiting, or have diarrhea. A child running a fever can return to school once he/she has been fever free for 24 hours.

PTO Corner

SimpleQpon fundraiser is over now. Thanks to all our families that participated. We still have a lot of unreturned books. Let-ters will go home to the families that did not turn theirs back in with the hopes of getting those returned. If you still have a book and would like to keep it, please send in $20 with your child's name on it (cash or check made out to TBall PTO). If you don't want the book, just simply returned the unused book to the office.

A Message from our Home School Facilitator Mrs. Holok

Spring is here and with spring comes new sports and activi-ties, thoughts of the next grade or new school. These can increase worry in children especially those with a heightened anxiety level. There is not a clear cause at this point on why there is an increase in childhood anxiety across families. I wanted to share this article as it explains anxiety and some of the signs and difficulties that come about if it is ignored. Eve-ryone has anxiety/stress at some time or another but it looks different and the duration is unique to each person. Stress/anxiety is essential to growth but it needs to have an up and down pattern. Some of our children never quite release their anxiety and it becomes a way of living. It is important that as parents we advocate for our children and give others that work with them helpful strategies other than “they get nerv-ous”. Make it specific to your child on what you have seen helps and work. Often our nervous or anxious kids will put on an exterior and keep it together in front of others but then lose control when they are at home.

5th Grade Parent Transition to Middle School Meeting

All parents of 5th grade students who will be attending Col. Wheeler Middle School for the 2019-20 school-year are invited to attend a Transition to Middle School meeting on Wednesday, May 8th at 6:00 PM at Col. Wheeler Middle School. The meeting will be held in the Col. Wheeler Middle School cafeteria. Please join middle school personnel as we present an overview of Col. Wheeler Middle School and the scheduling pro-cess for incoming 5th grade students. This meeting is designed for parents and will provide information on plans to transition our 5th graders to the middle school. Counselors and administrators will be available to an-swer individual questions after the presentation.

GoGuardian Internet and Application Filtering

To help protect students when using their school-owned Chromebooks at school and at home, Crown

Point Schools will begin using software designed specifically to help ensure students' safety by

providing comprehensive filtering and analytics of student Chromebook usage. The software is called

GoGuardian.

Use of GoGuardian in elementary classrooms will develop throughout the school year as teachers re-

ceive training and as students and parents learn about the application and its uses. In order for this to

occur, the software is deployed to elementary school-owned Chromebooks.

CPHS LATIN SUMMER The CPHS Latin Program is offering its 17th annual summer Latin experience to students

enrolled in 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, or 7th grade. This week-long camp will run at CPHS from 8:00 to 11:30 a.m. daily during the week of July 8-12. Students will par-ticipate in six different sessions each day that will al-low them to learn a little Latin as well as extend their knowledge about the ancient Roman civilization and culture (history, mythology, art, etc.). Making the Right Call

When Your Child Is Sick:

Should I keep my child home or send him or her to school? School policy (and/or state law) requires a child to stay home if he or she:

Has a fever of 100.0° or higher Has been vomiting or has diarrhea Has symptoms that keep your child from participating in school, such as:

Very tired or lack of appetite Cough that he or she cannot control, sneezing often Headache, body aches, or earache Sore Throat – a little sore throat is ok for school, but a bad sore throat could be

strep throat, even if there is no fever. Other signs of strep throat, in children are a headache and upset stomach, or rash. Call your doctor if your child has these signs. A special test is needed to know if it is strep throat.

Keep your child home if he or she is coughing or sneezing often because this spread the sickness to others.

24 Hour Rule

FEVER: Keep your child home until his or her FEVER has been gone WITHOUT medi-cine for 24 hours. Colds can be contagious for at least 48 hours. Returning to school too soon may slow recovery and make others sick.

VOMITING OR DIARRHEA: Keep your child home for 24 hours after the LAST time he or she vomited or had diarrhea.

ANTIBIOTICS: Keep your child home until 24 hours after the FIRST dose of antibiot-ics for anything like ear infection or strep throat.

We often have many children and adults with colds coming to school, and each one is passing their sickness to others. Please help others from becoming sick by keep-ing your child home during their illness.
