Today’s Readings … from the New Revised Standard Version Bible

Sentence:

May your favour, O Lord our God, be upon us and prosper the work of our hands. Ps 90: 17

Collect:

God you are justice and peace; to the powerful, give a conscience; to the oppressed, strength; to the rich, give generosity; to the poor, security. Guide us in your ways, not ours; let your kingdom come. Amen.

Amos 5: 21-24

21 I hate, I despise your festivals, and I take no delight in your solemn assemblies. 22 Even though you offer me your burnt- offerings and grain-offerings, I will not accept them; and the offerings of well-being of your fatted animals I will not look upon. 23 Take away from me the noise of your songs; I will not listen to the melody of your harps. 24 But let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.

Psalm 146

1 Praise the Lord O my soul: as long as I live I will praise the Lord. 2 Yes, as long as I have life: I will sing praises to my God. 3 Put no trust in princes, nor in any human power: for in them there is no help. 4 When they breathe their last, they return to dust: then all their plans come to nothing. 5 Happy are those whose helper is the God of Jacob: whose hope is in the Lord their God,

6 who made heaven and earth, the sea and all that is in them: who keeps a promise for ever, 7 who defends the cause of the oppressed: and gives food to the hungry. 8 The Lord sets free the prisoner, and gives sight to the blind: the Lord raises up those bowed down, and loves those who are just. 9 The Lord cares for the stranger in the land, and sustains the widows and orphans: but turns the way of the wicked to ruin. 10 The Lord shall reign for ever: your God O Jerusalem shall reign for all generations.

Romans 8: 18-25

18 I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory about to be revealed to us. 19For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the children of God; 20for the creation was subjected to futility, not of its own will but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope 21that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to decay and will obtain the free-dom of the glory of the children of God. 22We know that the whole creation has been groaning in labour pains until now; 23and not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan in-wardly while we wait for adoption, the re-demption of our bodies. 24For in hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what is seen? 25But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.

Luke 13: 13-21

13When Jesus laid his hands on her, immedi-ately she stood up straight and began praising God. 14But the leader of the synagogue, indig-

nant because Jesus had cured on the Sab-bath, kept saying to the crowd, ‘There are six days on which work ought to be done; come on those days and be cured, and not on the Sabbath day.’ 15But the Lord answered him and said, ‘You hypocrites! Does not each of you on the Sabbath un-tie his ox or his donkey from the manger, and lead it away to give it water? 16And ought not this woman, a daughter of Abraham whom Satan bound for eighteen long years, be set free from this bondage on the Sabbath day?’ 17When he said this, all his opponents were put to shame; and the entire crowd was rejoicing at all the wonderful things that he was doing. 18 He said therefore, ‘What is the kingdom of God like? And to what should I com-pare it? 19It is like a mustard seed that someone took and sowed in the garden; it grew and became a tree, and the birds of the air made nests in its branches.’ 20 And again he said, ‘To what should I compare the kingdom of God? 21It is like yeast that a woman took and mixed in with three measures of flour until all of it was leavened.’

CWS channels help to Sudan

Christian World Service is directing donations straight to churches in South Sudan, who are helping people to survive as they flee the country's war zones.

Christian World Service partners, the Action of Churches Together (ACT) Alliance is putting funds from Kiwis' giving directly into providing food, shelter and emergency sup-plies for people flee-ing the recent vio-lence in South Su-dan.

CWS partner Maridi Service Agency in Western Equato-ria assists people who have fled fighting in more vola-tile areas of the country, which has seen tens of thousands of South Sudanese escape their home regions after a new round of fighting broke out on 7 July. CWS donated funds will also assist refu-gees who have fled south to Uganda.

Hundreds of people have been killed in the area around the capital city, Juba and earlier in Wau city, in the northwest of South Su-dan.

Peace agreements between President Salva Kiir and former vice president Riek Machar have proved unstable, leading to this civil war as fighting broke out in December 2013. The latest flare up is the most recent in a string of violent outbreaks.

The combination of war, widespread corrup-tion and the near collapse of the oil industry

that provides 98% of the country's earnings are proving disastrous for ordinary people.

The constant threat of violence, frequent attacks, rape and widespread uncertainty mean crops have not been planted leaving 4.8 million people in need of food.

Insecurity has displaced more than 1.6 mil-lion people, half of whom have fled to neigh-bouring countries.

Since early July more than 30,000 have ar-rived at refugee camps in Uganda where churches are working through the ACT Alliance to man-age the Elegu border crossing. Thousands are awaiting shelter and in a network of

refugee camps at Adjumani.

90% of the new arrivals are women and chil-dren according to their reports, militias con-tinue to burn houses, murder, rape, and force men and boys to join in the violence.

Donations to Christian World Service with the title "South Sudan Crisis Appeal" go di-rectly to where they are needed most. Donations may be made direct to CWS via their web-site: http://cws.org.nz/

Diocesan News …

The Reverend Tim Barker will be installed as Vicar of the Parish of Taradale, at a ser-vice to be held at All Saints’ Church, Tara-dale, on Tuesday 2nd August 2016 at 7pm.

The Reverend Derm Buchanan (Chaplain at Hodgson House, Tauranga)

The Rev’d Derm Buchanan has been in the Bay of Plenty since his retirement, initially living in Taupō and for the last five years Derm and Aileen have been living in Tau-ranga. During this latter period of retire-ment Derm has been the Chaplain at Hodg-son House (a Waiapu Anglican Care rest-home and retirement village).

Due to Aileen’s declining health they have decided that they now need to move closer to family in Palmerston North and Derm has notified Bishop Andrew of his intention to retire from Hodgson House effective from Friday 5th August.

To mark Derm’s very significant ministry at Hodgson House a final service is being planned for Friday 5th August at 2.00 pm at Hodgson House.

Clergy and lay people who have had signifi-cant links with Derm during his time at Hodgson House are invited to join us for this opportunity to give thanks for Derm’s minis-try and wish he and Aileen God’s richest blessings as they move south.

Hodgson House will provide a farewell after-noon tea so, for catering purposes, if you are planning to attend, please email Cami - [email protected].

Or for more information contact The Rev’d Adrienne Bruce, Regional Dean BOP - email: [email protected].

WEST PAPUA PETITIONWEST PAPUA PETITION

Following momentum gained through Rev’d Socratez Yoman’s visit to Aotearoa New Zealand a petition has been launched calling on the New Zealand Government to speak out about the hu-man rights situation in West Papua.

This is a collaborative effort and support is needed to collect as many signatures as we can by 24 August. Hopefully this will add some pressure and motivation as the Government delegation heads to the Fed-erated States of Melanesia for the Pacific Island Forum summit in early September.

There are petition forms on the back ta-ble for signing.

The petition respectfully requests:

That the House of Representatives urge

the New Zealand Government to address

the ongoing human rights situation in

West Papua by taking the following ac-

tions:

Publicly advocate the Indonesian Gov-

ernment to uphold the rights of the

people of West Papua to freedom of as-

sembly and freedom of speech;

Condemn Indonesia for the arrest and

intimidation of thousands of peaceful

protestors in West Papua in the last

two years;

Condemn the state sanctioned torture

and killing of West Papuans;

Support the United Nations Special

Rapporteur on freedom of expression

to visit West Papua; and

Urge the Pacific Island Forum to sup-

port this stand and advocate for West

Papua at the United Nations.
