Principals NewsHappy New Year! We are currently very busy preparing for Catholic Schools Week (January 31 st toFebruary 4th). The week will kick off on Sunday, January 31st with our annual Open House. The en-tire parish, as well as school parents are invited to visit our school on this day. Classes will be in ses-sion and we are hoping that you will take the opportunity to see your children in action on a school

day. The teachers are ready to welcome you into their classrooms.

Registrations for the 2010 11 school year will be accepted on this day as well. We hope to attractnew students and families to visit during the Open House and consider enrolling in our school. Cur-rently, Steve Riedl is analyzing the necessary data to develop tuition rates for next year. Once thisprocess is completed, he will meet with Father De Salvo, Mary Safko and me to finalize therates. We hope to provide this information to you by January 27th.

Finally, the other big initiative is our annual Dinner Dance which will take place at the Carlisle on Fri-

    day, February 12th

. By now, you should have received your invitation and I hope you are planning toattend. This major fundraiser benefits our school to the tune of $35,000 which is $190 in expensesthat would otherwise be paid by tuition fees. There are a number of ways that you can help:

    1. Pray for the success of the Mardi GrasDinner Dance.

    2. Purchase tickets, and bring some friends (Valentines day weekend).

    3. Make a donation for the Silent Auction

    4. Take an ad in the Mardi GrasAd Book.

    5. Volunteer to help (Call Margie @ 312 823 3263 )

I will look for you at our Open House on January 31st

    TECHNOLOGY IN ACTION AT

    HOLY TRINITY CATHOLIC SCHOOL

    TECHNOLOGY IN THE CLASSROOM: HIGHLIGHTS

Snippets of how technology supplements our curriculum in each grade at Holy Trinity

    Kindergarten:

Kindergarten students in Mrs. Kellys class recently participated in an interactive SMART board lesson that helped

them learn how to dress for the weather. In Mrs. Feldsteins Kindergarten class, students have used the SMARTboard to help them practice their upper and lower case alphabet recognition, letter sequencing, number sequencing,

sorting and grouping. Both Kindergarten classes visit the computer lab weekly to participate in activities that supple-

    ment the curriculum.

    1st Grade:

Students in Miss Bobers 1st grade class were excited

to receive an addition to their class, a computer. Itwill be used as part of center activities in Math and

Reading. In addition, they have been able to take ad-

vantage of Discovery Education video streaming to

watch clips for their Science units. In Computer class,

students have started to practice their typing skills

with software called Type to Learn. Pictured to the

right are 1st grade students learning which fingers to

use to press the f and j keys on the keyboard.

    TECHNOLOGY IN ACTION AT

    HOLY TRINITY CATHOLIC SCHOOL continued...

    2nd Grade:

In Miss Rentas 2nd grade classroom, students have been able to use various

Internet websites to compliment the curriculum including a website that helped

them learn multiple meanings of words. Science class promises to be exciting for

2nd grade students in the coming weeks as they use the SMART board to help

    them dissect owl pellets.

    3rd Grade:

Thanks to the Internet, 3rd grade students were able to take a virtual field trip to the zoo! Theyve become familiar

with Excel to graph data and PowerPoint to insert pictures and create compound word books and fact flippers

(pictured below). In addition, students have enjoyed the new addition to their classroom, a SMART board. Pictured

below is 3rd Grade student Eleanor Milnes as she completes a multiplication problem.

    4th Grade:

4th grade students were able to learn more about Christopher Columbus,

thanks to a Christopher Columbus web quest. A web quest is a lesson us-

ing the Internet, that encourages students to gather, analyze and syn-

thesize information. Recently, they were able to use the SMART Board

to learn about and form compound words.

Students in 4th grade also have the privilege of participating in a key-

boarding class two times per week. The goal is that students will be able

to type at least 30 words per minute by the end of the school year.

    5th Grade:

5th grade students used both Microsoft PowerPoint and Publisher to

create Saint flyers in Religion. They also use Word to publish all writing

pieces and Internet is used for research. In addition, they visit the com-puter lab weekly to practice their foreign lan-

guage skills and have created graphs in Excel for

    Math class.

6th Grade:6th grade Social Studies students spent some time researching a

country in Asia, and then created a PowerPoint presentation to pre-

sent to the class. In Science, they created Isotope webs using

Kidspiration and Inspiration, and worked on element pamphlets using

Publisher. Weekly, they visit the Computer Lab to improve their

French writing, reading, and speaking skills.

    7th Grade:

7th grade students spent many hours in the computer lab creating videos for Religion using Windows Movie Maker.

These videos depicted the importance of life. Students hand selected scripture, images, and music to make a compel-

ling statement. In addition, theyve been working hard to research and write papers for their Science Fair projects.

    8th Grade:

8th Grade students have been immersed with technology during their time at Holy Trinity. Theyve created newslet-

ters in Religion using Publisher, and regularly use Word to publish their work in Language Arts. Additionally, they are

pros with PowerPoint and navigating the Internet for research. Most recently they created Christmas stories inFrench or Spanish in PowerPoint and were able to record their voices to insert into the presentation . Our younger

students enjoyed seeing them presented (pictured below).

    TECHNOLOGY IN ACTION AT

    HOLY TRINITY CATHOLIC SCHOOL continued...

    From the mouths of

    Holy Trinity

    Students:

    We asked: The best

    part about technology is:

    _______?

    Mia4th Grade: You can

    easily learn what you dont

    know.

Riya4th Grade: It keepsgetting better and better,

and as it gets better, the

    more stuff you can do.

    Paul1st Grade: The best

    part is games.

    Jocelyn1st Grade: It

    makes learning fun.

    John4th Grade: You

    learn things quick, like if

    someone popular dies, you

    know right away.

    Adam3rd Grade: All of

the links on the web teach

    you more about math and

    other subjects.

    Francesca3rd Grade:

the typing games thathelp me type better.

    Taylor, Spencer, and

    Sara6th Grade: SMART

    Boards, definitely SMART

    boards. They are so amaz-

    ing, cool and fun.

Using Software to Improve Reading Skills:

Grant money has given Holy Trinity the opportunity to pur-

chase software and two additional laptops to improve thereading skills of our students. The Read Naturally program

was recently started and helps students with their confi-

    dence as readers, along with

    building fluency, expression,

    and comprehension. We are ex-

cited to have been able to pur-

    chase this software and look

    forward to seeing the improve-

ment it makes in our students.

History and Science Come to Life:

Teachers have been given access to Discovery Streaming, a

great online resource which transforms classrooms and

brings education to life. Thousands of video clips are avail-

able for teachers to download for their students. In Miss

Sinibaldis 4th Grade classroom, students were able to ex-

plore the Titanic thanks to such

    clips. Science classes from K-8

have benefited from the wealth of

    material available from Discovery

    Streaming which engages students

in the topics they are learning

    about..

    Technology at Holy Trinity

As you can see, technology is an integral part of how chil-

dren learn at Holy Trinity. Thanks to the resources we have

available to us including the Internet, software like ReadNaturally and Type to Learn, and hardware including desk-

tops, laptops, and SMART Boards, the curriculum and in-

struction are enhanced. When students graduate 8th

grade, they are well prepared for success in every aspect

    of their education, including technology.

    Updated Drop-off and Pick-up Procedures

Only the following Linden Street traffic procedure is acceptable for the Pick-up and Drop- off of students.

Do not use the Park District driveway for student drop off or pickup, nor in the Church parking lot.

In order to provide the safest traffic environment, please make sure you and your children are familiar

    with the following procedures.

    DROP- OFF PROCEDURE HIGHLIGHTS

Arrival time Mr. Barker will be outside conducting traffic control from 7:40 8:00 a.m. on schooldays. Your child is not considered late until after Mr. Barker has entered the school building. They

will not be tardy if the delay is related to drop off traffic congestion. Do not drop your child off

before 7:40 am as there is no supervision.

Since road conditions and parked vehicles make it impossible to see children that may getdropped off farther back in line, only the FIRST car in line, stopped at the crosswalk, can exit their

    children.

Please have your children ready to exit the vehicle before stopping at the crosswalk. Childrenshould walk to the front of their vehicle and cross in the cross walk with Mr. Barker.

For added safety of the smaller children, pre-school parents should use the inside lane only todrop off their child.

For your convenience, a parking spot has been reserved just north of the cross walk. If for some reason

you cannot comply with the drop off procedure you may consider parking your car in this reserved spot

and helping your child out of the car.

    PICK- UP PROCEDURE HIGHLIGHTS

Please be sure to obey the instructions from the staff supervising the pick-up procedure.

Pre-school and Kindergarten cars should begin to line up only a few minutes before dismissaltimes. It is our intent not to obstruct the normal vehicle traffic on Linden. We will only take the

necessary time needed as to allow the children to safely enter the vehicles. If we abuse this

privilege, we are subject to having it revoked by local authorities.

During pre-school and kindergarten dismissal a crossing sign will obstruct the outside lane whenpick-up procedures are functioning so that there will be no additional cars moving in the area

    during this time.

Preschool and kindergarten cars should only use the inside lane. The pre-school and kindergarten first TWO cars can be loaded at the same time as long as

available staffing is present to assist.

The older children (Grades 1 8) should load into no more than the first THREE vehicles in bothtraffic lanes.
