Prelude

*Opening Song - “What A Friend”

Welcome

Prayer

Song - “Jesus Paid It All”

*Invocation

We meet in the strong name of our God,

We praise You, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen.

*Litany

We confess that we are still uninformed about mental illness and how it impacts

persons and their families.

At times, because of our lack of knowledge and understanding, we find ourselves

separated from our sisters and brothers with mental illness, their families and ourselves.

Because of our lack of knowledge we live cut off from sources of strength and

power that would help us be present to people with mental illness. This lack often

makes us feel that we cannot act.

ln the face of all this, we continue to seek knowledge and understanding of mental

illness that will bring liberation and shalom to us and those we serve and unite us to

action.

O God, our liberation and shalom, we seek the power of your Spirit, that we may

live in fuller union with you, ourselves and our sisters and brothers with mental illness.

Also grant that we may gain courage to love and understand each other. Amen.

*Prayer of the Day

Dear Lord, we believe that You love each one of us just as we are and You walk

with us on our individual journeys through life. Give us courage to face our

challenges and open us today to the many ways You are already working in our

midst. Today, we pray for those who struggle with mental illness, so that we might

help them have courage and wisdom in the face of ignorance and stigma. lnspire

us as we seek to overcome fear, acquire knowledge, and advocate for

compassionate and enlightened treatment and services. Help us to see one

another as You see us ... persons of value and worth ... persons of creativity and

potential. May we come to understand the interconnectedness of mind, body and

spirit in bringing about health and wholeness. Provide us with Your redeeming grace

to give us peace and hope. We ask this is Jesus' name. Amen

Page 4: WELCOME FAITH LUTHERAN HURCH€¦ · good, so that he will have something to share with one who has need. 29 Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word

Scripture - Ephesians 4:25-32 25 Therefore, laying aside falsehood, speak truth each one of you with his neighbor, for

we are members of one another. 26 Be angry, and yet do not sin; do not let the sun go

down on your anger, 27 and do not give the devil an opportunity. 28 He who steals must

steal no longer; but rather he must labor, performing with his own hands what is

good, so that he will have something to share with one who has need. 29 Let

no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good

for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those

who hear. 30 Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the

day of redemption. 31 Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander

be put away from you, along with all malice. 32 Be kind to one another, tender-

hearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you.

Gospel - Matthew 18:15-17 15 “If your brother sins, go and show him his fault in private; if he listens to you, you have

won your brother. 16 But if he does not listen to you, take one or two more with you, so

that by the mouth of two or three witnesses every fact may be confirmed. 17 If he

refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the

church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector.

Sermon Text - Genesis 46:1-4, 28-32 1 So Israel set out with all that he had, and came to Beersheba, and offered sacrifices

to the God of his father Isaac. 2 God spoke to Israel in visions of the night and said,

“Jacob, Jacob.” And he said, “Here I am.” 3 He said, “I am God, the God of your

father; do not be afraid to go down to Egypt, for I will make you a great nation

there. 4 I will go down with you to Egypt, and I will also surely bring you up again;

and Joseph will close your eyes.” 28 Now he sent Judah before him to Joseph, to point

out the way before him to Goshen; and they came

into the land of Goshen. 29 Joseph prepared his

chariot and went up to Goshen to meet his father

Israel; as soon as he appeared before him, he fell on

his neck and wept on his neck a long time. 30 Then

Israel said to Joseph, “Now let me die, since I have

seen your face, that you are still alive.” 31 Joseph said

to his brothers and to his father’s household, “I will go up and tell Pharaoh, and will say

to him, ‘My brothers and my father’s household, who were in the land of Canaan,

have come to me; 32 and the men are shepherds, for they have been keepers of

livestock; and they have brought their flocks and their herds and all that they have.’

Page 5: WELCOME FAITH LUTHERAN HURCH€¦ · good, so that he will have something to share with one who has need. 29 Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word

Pastor’s Ponderings . . . 1. In Joseph’s life, what were the injustices and difficulties he experienced?

2. How many of these periods of suffering were the result of human mistreatment?

3. Why is forgiveness difficult?

4. What is the danger when people refuse to forgive?

5. Should forgiveness be withheld until the person who hurt us is repentant?

6. How did Joseph’s forgiveness open the way for his father and family to be

saved?

7. How does Christ’s offer of forgiveness give us the confidence and courage to seek

forgiveness and to be reconciled to God?

Episode 3: Sweden! Sweden is a very secular and

individualistic society where rebelling against

authority, community, and the sacred is

considered the norm. But even in a location where

nature is idolized and the church is dying, Rasool

finds glimpses of the holy. "I like to work here because I know that maybe the

church has died, but not Jesus." - Annahita Parsan

Cherish Center’s Baby Bottle Campaign

Four Sundays in October - 4th - 25th

Your coins (or cash or a check!) in a baby bottle can make a difference in the lives of young mothers and their children. The proceeds of this unique

fundraiser will be used to help Cherish House.

Cherish House is a group maternity home in the Iowa Great Lakes area for pregnant teens and young women who desire to make the most of their lives. Each girl will have the opportunity for personal growth through life skills training in: finance; nutrition; homemaking; parent training; personal counseling and adoption assistance (when needed); spiritual support; and learning to care for one another.

During her stay at Cherish House, the young lady will experience life within a structured, nurturing, and loving family setting. Our house moms will not only encourage her, but model healthy relationships.

For more information, call 712-338-3333 or stop by the Cherish Center office at 1004 22nd St., Milford, IA 51351. Visit them online at www.cherishcenter.org or email them at [email protected]

Please return your baby bottle to Faith Lutheran by Sunday, November 1!
