WELCOMESteven Wilksch - Principal Faith Middle & Senior Campus

Welcome to 2018 and the start of a new year. May God be with you and your family this year.

I take this opportunity to extend a very warm welcome to new students, families and staff who are joining our College community. It is our hope and prayer that you will have a long and positive association with our College and that you will be blessed through your involvement with Faith. It has been wonderful to see students and staff return with the familiar buzz of energy and enthusiasm. The start of the 2018 school year has been particularly special as we celebrated with an Opening Chapel for Faith Campus followed by a second Chapel to officially recognise the merging of Faith College and Tanunda Lutheran School.

Opening Chapel Faith Campus - Tuesday January 30At our opening worship College Chaplain, Mr Yeager, reminded us about the story of the disciple Peter who left the comfort of a small boat to walk upon the water to reach Jesus. Chaplain Adam’s encouraging words explained no matter what we face this year, whether it be calm waters or stormy seas – we are not alone. It is comforting to know our Lord and Saviour who calls us into a relationship with Him is with us always.

We also recognised 2017 Dux students. It was wonderful to have our 2017 Year 12 Dux students, Stephanie Trinkle and Cooper Dunn, address the gathering. Details of Year level Dux awards and the 2017 Year 12 results appear in the following pages. We can all feel extremely proud of the Year 12 results from last year – they were simply outstanding and yet again place Faith as an extremely highly performing school.

1FaithLast Friday over 1,000 members of the College community joined together for a Chapel service to officially mark the beginning of our new relationship with TLS. The majority of the service was led by students ranging from Year 1 through to Year 12. I congratulate our students for the capable, confident and excellent manner in which they led us last week – terrific job! We have received an incredible number of positive comments about the celebration and I take this opportunity to recognise and thank our College Chaplain Mr Adam Yeager who played a significant role in the organisation, planning and leading of the day.

With the celebrations now behind us, our focus will be to fully merge our two schools. This is a slow and complex process but one that is progressing very smoothly. I suspect that in the short term, there may be some uncertainty or confusion in the community regarding the names of both schools. From this point forward we are simply one school, with one name; Faith Lutheran College. Faith Lutheran College now has a junior campus (housed on the TLS site) and a middle and senior campus (housed at the Faith site). The only future change will come in 2019 when the junior school campus no longer offers Year 7 and these students will move to the middle school campus. In effect, the junior campus will offer ELC – Year 6 and the middle and senior campus will be Year 7-12. In future communication with parents the terms junior, middle and senior school will no doubt become part of our vocabulary.

The new Faith Lutheran College (ELC to Year 12) now shares one logo. The new logo has been designed to recognise and respect the culture and heritage of both schools while also creating a new and exciting brand. In the weeks and months ahead you will see the new logo replace previous logos. The response to the new logo has been overwhelmingly positive and I take this opportunity to acknowledge the large team of people who worked on the logo project throughout last year.

In addition to the merge, another significant focus of the coming months will be the construction of new facilities at the middle and senior campus. While the new facilities have predominately been designed for middle school students (i.e. Years 7, 8 and 9) all students across the College will have the opportunity to use the new facilities. We anticipate construction will commence in Term 2 in preparation for the start of the 2019 school year.

Enrolment inquiry for Year 7 has been incredibly strong and we are very excited about the educational program that Faith College will offer in 2019. In the coming months we will be making some very exciting announcements regarding curriculum, subject choice and the true middle school experience that will be offered to Year 7 students. We will also be announcing new initiatives for middle and senior school students.

Without doubt it will be an exciting year for Faith. Like me I hope you are excited about the possibilities that exist for all students. I look forward to keeping families informed of developments as they occur, via the College newsletter.

Blessings for 2018, Steve.

YEAR 12 TEAM BUILDING DAYSarah Ruwoldt - Year 12 Wellbeing LeaderYear 12 students recently participated in a day of team building, discussion and laughter facilitated by the YLead group from Queensland. YLead is an organisation offering leadership and positive education programs designed to develop the leader within, demonstrating that everyone can make a positive contribution to their school community. Students learned how to work effectively in small and large groups and break down barriers by listening to each other speak about people who have had a positive impact in their lives. It was so uplifting to see many students move out of their comfort zones and work together in the scheduled activities. They certainly related events of the day to their motto 'Grow through what you go through' and it was evident by the end of the day that our students had certainly grown as one united group of young adults.

Despite the weather leading to some last minute changes to the set up and logistics, the Welcome BBQ was an opportunity for Year 8 families to make connections and get to know others in their Village Care Groups. Special thanks to the Rotary Club of the Barossa for cooking the meat, to the Canteen staff for preparing the salads and to the group of Peer Support Leaders who served. We hope the families and Village Care Group staff found the night enjoyable and valuable.

YEAR 8 STOMPER ROCKETDuring the afternoon (of the year 8 Orientation day) students worked in Village Care Groups on a Stomp Rocket STEM challenge. Students designed and made a rocket using a 30cm piece of pvc pipe, an A4 sheet of foam and a piece of bike tyre tubing. The rockets were then attached to an empty 2 litre drink container and then stomped upon in order to launch. Congratulations to Rosenthal whose rocket flew 40.6 meters to take out the challenge.
