“God will supply us with the opportunity, but it’s up to us to do something with it.” Anonymous

God supplied Father Suresh with the opportunity to come to America two years ago. “I felt I wanted to be of service outside of India. A friend of mine, who was in India on holiday, told me about Oregon. He introduced me to people at the Archdiocesan office via email.”

That friend is Fr. Amal, Pastor of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Tillamook. The process of receiving a Senior Priest assignment began nearly 3 years earlier when Fr. Amal contacted the Archdiocesan office to initiate a virtual Priest assignment in Oregon.

“I wanted a difference in my life. Over the years, I had held numerous positions in India.” After a rewarding career, Fr. Suresh was ready for a change. “I accepted the challenge and it was very good!” In 2017, he became Parochial Vicar at Immaculate Heart Church in Stayton.

“People are very good and kind here. They are very approachable. I very much enjoy being involved with pastoral activities.” As our OLL Parochial Vicar, Fr. Suresh will definitely continue to have involvement with the myriad of activities we have to offer.

Our new Parochial Vicar is a soft-spoken Priest with a warm, engaging demeanor. He is at ease talking on a wide variety of subjects. He is excited about coming to our parish. He wants to learn about Lake Oswego and to eventually visit the Oregon coast and other areas in Oregon.

Formation of seminarians constituted part of Fr. Suresh’s professional life in India. He also served as Principal of English St. James Matriculation School. In addition, he has experience as a Parish Priest.

Fr. Suresh has three brothers and one sister. He is the second sibling in the family. He is from the State of Tamil Nadu on the Southern tip of India.

During summer, I invite you to participate in one of our music groups. It’s a good way to “test” whether singing or playing an instrument for Mass is a good way for you to use your musical talent. During summer, rehearsals are just before each Mass so there is no need for an additional time commitment. Each of our groups is looking for new members.

5:00 PM Saturday Choir – Our traditional choir sings hymns and songs from Breaking Bread. During summer, they don’t sing in choral parts, offering you an opportunity to simply “come and sing” with the choir. Rehearsal is at 4:15 PM, right before Mass.

9:00 AM Sunday Ensemble – We sing music from Spirit & Song and other contemporary songs. During summer, we rehearse at 8:00 AM before Mass in the parish hall offering a convenient way to participate and see if the experience is right for you. We are especially looking for men’s and women’s voices.

11:30 AM Sunday Ensemble – We sing music from Spirit & Song and other contemporary songs. During summer, we rehearse at 10:45 AM before Mass in the church. We are especially looking for men’s and women’s voices.

5:00 PM Sunday – Our LifeTeen Mass music group is looking for teens and young adults to sing or play an instrument – especially during the summer. Jethro Higgins leads the group. Rehearsal is at 4:00 PM before Mass.

Sound Crew – Could you be a sound “tech” to manage our iPad soundboard for the 9:00 AM or 11:30 AM Sunday Mass? If you have a tablet or smartphone you already know the basics and the rest is pretty easy to learn. Consider offering your service in this simple way!

Contact me, Tom Tomaszek, with questions about any of these opportunities: [email protected] or 503-636-7687 at the parish office.

Returning and Searching Catholics: Know God More Personally Through Awakening Faith

Have you considered returning to the Catholic church - or developing for the first time, a more active practice of your Catholic faith? Like many Catholics, your faith may have been passed down to you by your parents or other family members. Maybe you even attended Catholic schools. Did your faith development stop once you reached adulthood?

Seeing your faith from a deeper perspective is necessary if it is to have its’ full force in your life. Truly connecting to your Catholic faith can bring a renewed appreciation of being a Catholic.

Come together with others to grow in your understanding of God and of the true meaning of life. We will meet in the Parish Library, on the 2nd floor of the Parish Center, beginning Thursday, May 2nd, from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM. We gather for

6 sessions and have 4 optional sessions. The sessions are on Spirituality, Jesus, The Holy Spirit, God’s Mercy, The Mass, The Church.

Get more information about Awakening Faith at ollparish.com/adults.

I will be happy to answer any questions and tell you more about Awakening Faith - I believe you will be renewed and grow spiritually. Contact me with any questions or just show up! Margaret Jamieson • 503-635-2915 [email protected]

Oregon Legislature Eliminates PAS Waiting PeriodsSenate Bill 579 eliminates phy-sician-assisted suicide waiting periods for those diagnosed as near death. The Oregon House passed the bill 35-22 yesterday. It will now become law unless the governor vetoes it.

“The Legislature heard from highly qualified and experienced medical professionals who testified that this

bill is not only unnecessary but dangerous,” says Lois Anderson, ORTL executive director. “They voted largely down party lines to fulfill the ominous agenda of a handful of their colleagues.”

The journal Mayo Clinic Proceedings, in a November 2005 article, printed that survival predictions were made, as part of a study, for 468 patients in hospice programs. Only 20 percent of the predictions were accurate.

“While it is incredibly hard for physicians to accurately prog-nosticate someone’s life expectancy,” says Anderson, “It is not incredibly hard for a person in a position of influence to bully a sick person into obtaining lethal drugs. Eliminating the wait-ing period will make this even easier.” - Oregon Right to Life

The Oregon Catholic Conference with the Archdiocese of Portland is dismayed and disappointed of the passage and probably signature of Governor Kate Brown on SB 579 regarding Euthanasia. Legal protections of waiting periods, especially for vulnerable patients, were eliminated.

“Caring for life from the beginning to end. What a simple thing, what a beautiful thing. So, go forth and don’t be discouraged. Care for life. It’s worth it.” Pope Francis

Street Ministry to The HomelessTwo Saturdays ago,, June 22 was a special day of “accompaniment,” to borrow a phrase from Fr. John Marshall’s cover article last Sunday.

Our Mercy Team group encounter a very large assembly of down and out individuals awaiting our arrival at our first stop under the bridge. 45 souls were waiting, and they kept coming. After setting up the food and clothing stations, we had time to listen to their personal struggles and offer them hope, comfort and share the love of Jesus Christ with them. Several guests expressed how much “they love us.” At least two of them expresses an interest in taking a “first step” to recovery and turning around their life. We were able to provide “first step” suggestions, including reuniting with a church group they may have been involved with in the past. We provided contacts to various city resources for the homeless. And we started their journey with prayer, both for them and with them.

We ended the time with our new friends sharing handshakes, hugs and fruit smoothies!

Our next Street Ministry outreaches are Saturday, July 27 and Saturday, August 24.

Mercy Teams is planning participation with a special SOLVE “homeless camp cleanup” projects in August, Operation Overcoat on September 29, and some summer parishioner-in-need of yard work projects this summer.

“Accompany” us and share your love, whenever you can!
