Workshop Objective:

The objective for this workshop is to introduce you to our routines and academic procedures, so that you can best prepare your student for success during the upcoming school year.

Routines

Transitional Kindergarten Academics

• Emphasis on oral language development. • Hands-on learning through outdoor/indoor

centers. • Letter and sound recognition. • Number recognition.

Kindergarten Academics

• Letter- and sound fluency.• Reading 20 sight words.• Reading CVC-words (car, sat)• Phonetic writing (2 sentences)• Numbers 0-100.• Addition and subtraction (up to 10)

First Grade Academics

• Write one paragraph with 5-7 sentences.

• Use transitional words.• Tell time.• Solve word problems.• Addition and subtraction with one and

two digits.

Second Grade Academics

• Convey a positive attitude about school.• Make transportation plans clear to the child.• Create a normal routine atmosphere at home the first

few days of school.• Give your child free playtime at home after school.• Uses words, not physical action, to express emotions

such as anger and disappointment

• Understand and follow 2 step directions• Wait and take turns• Help your child cope with the occasional frustrations

and disappointments in school.• Remember that learning to like school and liking to

learn are closely related.• Avoid comparing this child's school experience with

how siblings did when they began at school.• Think of yourself as a coach who supports and

facilitates your child's healthy development in school

while singing ABC song.• Tying shoe laces• Fastening snaps, buttons, and zippers• Tying jacket around the waist• Opening snack containers/wrappers• Reading 20 minutes daily • Working on a computer

Skills to practice at home• Draw pictures and have the student tell you a

story about what they drew• Have your child explain how they knew an answer• Have them count how many items you bought at

the groceries.• Scavenger hunts of different shapes• Sort objects by size, shapes, and colors• Cutting with scissors• Tracing lines and basic shapes• Hold a pencil/crayon in a non-fisted grip• Recognizing letters & numbers• States, write, and read their first and last name.

• Uniform• Lunch box• Snack containers• Backpack (fits 9x12 folder)• School supplies (pencils, erasers,

crayons, color pencils, scissors…)• Check teacher’s supply lists/wish lists.

Summer Activities • Visit the local library• Go on a picnic. Have the child independently eat

his/her lunch or snack. • Talk about words in your surrounding. • Play number games• Visit the grocery store and let the child help with

(age appropriate) counting. • Read, read, read!!!• Summer writing journal. • Play games and sports.
