From the President –

“Holy Father, keep them in your name, which you have given me, that they may be one, even as we are one.”

On May 20th, the day of the spring Voters’ Assembly, Pastor Harmon preached a powerful sermon, speaking about our unity as a church and as a Christian community. In case you missed it, the Gospel reading on Sunday was from John 17: 11-18. Verse 11 says, “Holy Father, keep them in your name, which you have given me, that they may be one, even as we are one.” Pastor spoke about how he misinterpreted that verse for a long time, thinking, “If only people would think like me, then we’ll be one!” I thought, “Amen! I know I do that. Don’t we all do that?” I once heard someone explaining the words of political commentator and sometimes candidate Pat Buchanan, saying, “He’s not racist or classist. He just thinks the world would be a better place if we all thought like him.”

“Holy Father, keep them in your name, which you have given me, that they may be one, even as we are one.”

A Pastor of ours from a former congregation had a quote he liked to share: When Jesus builds a church, Satan builds a chapel. And what follows is what I believe is one of Satan’s prime building materials:

Pick a little, talk a little, pick a little, talk a little

Cheepcheepcheep, talk a lot, pick a little more

Pick a little, talk a little, pick a little, talk a little

Cheepcheepcheepcheepcheepcheepcheepcheep

(With thanks to Meredith Wilson’s The Music Man)

I got a phone call a few weeks ago from a concerned member. “I heard that with the new governance, Pastor Harmon is not going to preach anymore because he’ll be too busy with administration.” I assured her that this was not true and thanked her profusely for calling. Thank you—instead of passing on an unfounded rumor, she called and got the truth.

“Holy Father, keep them in your name, which you have given me, that they may be one, even as we are one.”

I was comparing Lutheran light-bulb jokes with a Deaconess friend of mine recently and she came up with the ultimate punch line: Change the light bulb? What do you mean, change the light bulb? But that’s my mother’s light bulb!

“Holy Father, keep them in your name, which you have given me, that they may be one, even as we are one.”

Change and chatter and self-righteousness. Okay, so from the tone of this article, you might be able to tell that it’s been quite a month. I have to tell you truthfully, though, at the moment my heart is full. On Sunday,

someone who strongly opposed the updated governance made a point of coming to speak to me, and note that he’d seen it went through and went well. Several people shared that they couldn’t be at the meeting and were so pleased to see that the governance passed. And Pastor Phil spoke at Bible Study about our unity in the spirit, the Holy Spirit of Pentecost, the spirit that unites us in the Gospel as brothers and sisters in Christ. What a gift to be part of a Christian community that strives to find unity in Christ, that knows that the most important truth is not a whispered rumor or individual opinion but the truth of the love of God. Thank you for being witnesses to me. Satan may be trying to get his plans approved for that chapel, but our members are holding steadfast to the Lord!

“Musical Offices”:

With the continued growth we have moved some offices around. Pastor Larry’s office is now at the New Kent Campus. He does have some space in the music room for the times he is here in Williamsburg. The Study off the Fellowship Hall is now the Youth Room. The Resource Room is now a resource room/storage room for ministries with cabinets and for the Hungry and Homeless Ministry. These changes are necessary until we have new space to utilize. Thank you for your patience and support.

Summer Growing Points Cookout:

This summer we will offer three opportunities for the whole community to come together for fellowship, fun and praise. On Wednesday, June 20, July 18, and August 22 we will have a cookout at church. We’ll provide the hotdogs and burgers, everyone bring a side and a dessert to share. From 6-6:30 we will start with a time of praise and prayer in the sanctuary led by our band. At 6:30 the cookout begins. All ages are encouraged to come. Sprinklers and other outdoor games will be available. This is a time to simply come together and enjoy each other.

Summer Work Week:

The week of August 6-10 you are invited to a King of Glory work week. Whether you can work one day or all of them we will use this time to repair, clean and enhance the space God has given us here. A sign up board will be posted at the end of the month for you to choose the jobs you’d like to do and the times you’d like to do them. All of us working together will make a great different. Thank you!

Worship All Summer Long:

As the lazy days of summer come upon us please be sure to keep worshipping the Lord a priority in your summer schedule. His love, grace and mercy are yours all year long.

Help Wanted: There are several areas in the church ministry where your gifts can be utilized. Each month we will post a Help Wanted List and encourage you to get involved:

Caring Ministries Stephen Ministry Sunday – June 10th.

By Rev. Phil Kuehnert, Stephen Ministry Coordinator

What a journey it has been! What a year! Late last spring Sharon McLean met Judy and myself at Starbucks for what turned out to be an almost two hour conversation about the possibility of our joining the leadership team of King of Glory’s Stephen Ministry. We had no idea of the blessings…..

…..so on the 2nd Sunday of Pentecost, June 10th we will commission eight new Stephen Ministers. They have completed 50 hours of training, meeting almost every Tuesday evening for 2 ½ hours in addition to two Saturday mornings (!) covering such topics as confidentiality, care of the home bound, hospital visitation, care of those who have lost loved ones, spiritual resources – always focusing on the four quadrants of the “Caregiver’s Compass” – Compassion, Skilled, Full of Faith, Trustworthy.

All four services on the 10th will celebrate the work of King of Glory’s Stephen Ministry program.

Those being commissioned are Linda Anders, Mark Elgert, Angela Goodson, Lynn Miller, Andrea Salamy, Monica Smith, Larry Van Doren, Van Vogel. In addition, Judy and I will also be commissioned as Stephen Ministers, as we had joined the leadership team as Stephen Leaders without having done the training.

And I am pleased to announce that we have Lynn Miller and Joy Sawhill attending leadership training in Pittsburgh the end of July. They will be joining the SM leadership team: Dan Scungio, Jon Falck, Judy Kuehnert, Phil Kuehnert and Sharon McLean (on sabbatical).

The festivities on the 10th of June include a Williamsburg Stephen Ministry Network reception in the fellowship hall of KOG from 3 – 5 PM for the 24 trainees who have completed the Stephen Minister Training Course. The Network includes 9 area congregations who have Stephen Ministry programs.

We had no idea of the blessings that we would receive, when after prayerful consideration, we told Sharon we’d be will-ing to go to Leadership Training the end of July, last year. We are very thankful that we have been able to join such a healthy and vibrant ministry of “distinctive Christian care.

Discipleship and Fellowship F.O.L.K.S. - Fellowship, Outings, Luncheons, Knowledge for

Seniors - meets every Third Tuesday (except July) for food and fellowship. The average attendance at our luncheon meetings is approximately 55. Join us and see what the "Golden Years" can be!

FOLKS will celebrate the coming of summer at their June 19th meeting with a visit to nearby Freedom Park. The new Freedom Park Interpretive Center includes exhibitions of artifacts from the colonial period (3 recreated cabins from the earliest Free Black Settlement in America), the Park’s amenities, wildlife, vegetation (the Williamsburg Botanical Garden) and history, as well as a kiosk that provides visual tours of the park for those who choose not to walk its 600-acres!

We will gather at KoG at 11:00 for social time; at 11:30 we will enjoy a “comfortable picnic” at the church before leaving for the Park - menu: hot dogs, hamburgers, fried chicken, potato salad, and lots of great desserts. Be sure to sign up at the Welcome Center for June’s picnic and trip to Freedom Park, and include any guests that you’ll be bringing. If you should need a ride, please contact Ron or Linda LaFleur (564.4532).

The Lunch Bunch will be going to the Blue Heron for lunch on June 5. We will meet in the parking lot of Farm Fresh in Norge at 11:15. We will car pool from there. We are limited to parking at the home we will be cruising from so I will need for everyone to RSVP by Friday, June 1, in order to figure out the transportation. Please call Lana Wingate at 259-5949 or email [email protected] for reservations.

Education Growing Points 9:30 AM Sunday Mornings in the Fellowship Hall: In June, we will study the theological elements of Pentecost.

Evangelism, Missions, Outreach A major effort of the LWML will be cleanup of the KOG

kitchen on June 30.

Notes received in April, 2012 by Ev Brown, Bo Wingate, and Pastor Harmon from FISH, Housing Partnerships, and Faith in

Action

On behalf of the Board of Directors, the more than 250 Volunteers who give of their time and talents to FISH, but more importantly, the thousands of clients served by FISH, we want to thank you and your board and King of Glory Lutheran Church for your very generous donation of $500 which we

received recently.

FISH, as an all volunteer organization, does not sponsor any fund raising events, but depends solely on the generosity of the local community for its support. Donations, both in-kind and monetary have kept FISH in operation since 1975. King of Glory Church has long been a most generous supporter of our operation for which we are very

grateful.

In all of 2011 we provided food and personal hygiene and household cleaning supplies to 7,595 individuals. We supplied clothing to 1,902 adults and 1,236 children. Another interesting figure we track is the number of new households, or ones that have never been served by FISH previously, who come to us each year for support. In 2011 it was 597. All of these numbers are higher than those for all of 2010. So far through the end of March, 2012, we have provided food and clean-ing supplies to 1,839 individuals and clothing to 408 adults and 203 children. New households through March are 162. It doesn’t appear that the

economy has turned around much at all.

Again, thank you for you continued support and prayers for our efforts to assist those less

fortunate.

Albert A. (Bud) Voorhess, President

Dear King of Glory Lutheran Church Evangelism, Outreach and Mission

Board:

On behalf of Housing Partnerships, Inc. I would like to thank you for

the donation in amount of $300.00.

Housing Partnerships works to improve substandard housing conditions for local elderly, disabled and low-income families by making essential repairs to their homes. Typical projects include repairing unsafe porches and steps, repairing leaking roofs, repairing water

damaged ceilings and floors, painting, plumbing and building ramps.

We appreciate your support in helping HPI continue to help our

neighbors in need. Without the support of the community with donations and volunteers this could not be accomplished. Again,

thank you for your support in this special way.

Michele Mixner DeWitt, Board Chairman

Dear Rev. Harmon,

Thank you and the members of King of Glory for your continued support to Williamsburg Area Faith in Action (WFIA). Your support ensures that seniors and adults with a chronic illness or physical disability in our community will continue to receive the help they need

to stay independent in their homes.

Kathryn writes, “Again I wanted to give you my deepest thanks for all the help you provide to keep me in my home and more independent a little longer than what the outcome would be if your wonderful program was not available to those of us in desperate need of transportation to doctor’s appointments,

grocery shopping and other needs.”

We can only help Kathryn and others like her because of the ongoing support we receive from King of Glory and others. We couldn’t do it without your financial support and the volunteers from your congregation. We, and those we serve, deeply

appreciate your generosity.

Rita Smith, Executive Director

Thank You’s

Dear King of Glory Lutheran Church We thank you for your generous donations of $200.00 to the

From His Hands Program and of $300.00 to our Social Services Program of the Salvation Army of Greater Williamsburg.

We greatly appreciate your donation during these difficult economic times and than you for your concern for those in our community.

Because of your generous support we are able to help more families, individuals, older adults and youth not only during the holiday season but all year round. We try very hard to “Do the Most Good” with the generous donation of this community.

Captain Roger Hasty, Corps Office, Williamsburg Corps

From May, 2012:

Dear Ev and Bo: On behalf of Avalon: A Center for Women and Children, I thank you for your most recent contribution in the amount of $500.00. Your gift will make it possible for us to serve more than 500 women and children in the greater Williamsburg area who are experiencing domestic violence, sexual assault, and homelessness this year. Thank you!

Your church is helping to make a difference in the lives of others and, like our Board of Directors, staff, and volunteers, you are assisting in making our community a safer and healthier one. Thank you so very much for this generous gift.

To: Our King Of Glory Friends It is such a blessing for us to be a part of the KOG fam-ily. We are touched by the many expressions of sympathy from so many since the death of our daughter Sara. We cherish the many wonderful memories of Sara and that she and her loving husband have blessed us with two beautiful granddaughters to love and cherish. We take comfort knowing she is in the arms of our loving Savior. Thank you for your prayerful support. Gene and Dianne Kessler
