Homework

• Your child will have homework to complete almost every night of the week. Our policy for 5th grade is that homework should not exceed a total of 60 minutes per night.

• Please encourage your child to review concepts learned in class, spelling words, and vocabulary words, each night so that he/she will not have to spend excessive time preparing for quizzes or tests the night before it is to be given.

• Your child is responsible for writing homework assignments in their planner.

ATTENDANCE• It is extremely important that your child attends

school daily. However, we do not want your child to come to school ill. If your child is absent from school, please send a note for the absence when your child returns. Otherwise, the absence is unexcused.

• If assignments are requested, please call the office before 9:00 a.m., so we can gather work from all teachers. The work will not be available for pick-up until 2:00PM.

• If your child is absent from school, we must have a note by the 2nd day of their return to school. If a note is not sent in by the 2nd day of their return , the absence will be marked unexcused.

Yearly Perfect Attendance

To qualify for perfect attendance, your child can have no more than 3 tardies and/or checkouts per year.

Columbia County Testing for 5th Grade

•Georgia Milestone will be administered in April 2016. This year it will be a pass/fail year.

Money — If you send money for any reason, please place it in an envelope, labeled with the reason and the child’s name. We prefer checks if at all possible.

Also, if you are sending money for multiple purposes, please remember to send different checks in separate envelopes.

If you are going to send in a snack for the class (for birthdays, celebrations, etc) it MUST be store bought with ingredients

Bus Riders/Car Riders

If there are any changes in a child’s normal routine for going home in the afternoon, we must receive a note from the custodial parent.

Keep in Mind

As fifth grade teachers, we feel that it is very important to teach independence and responsibility. We would like to suggest a couple of things that you can do to assist us in teaching your child to become independent and responsible students.

class in the morning. The teachers are unavailable to conference with you at this time, as we are busy preparing for the day.

•Do not bring forgotten homework assignments, snacks, and lunches to school.

Additional 5th Grade Activities

Your child will be participating in 4-H this year. The Columbia County 4-H school enrichment program includes a developed curriculum that provides hands-on experiences, environmental learning, and character education. The activities will emphasize community service, leadership skills, and citizenship development.

This program is completed during the school day in the classroom.

4-H Community Service Projects

•Pop Tabs: These are collected and donated to the Ronald McDonald House. We collect these all year.

•Pounds of Pennies: These are collected and donated to the Salvation Army. This project ends in December.

P.T.O. We would like all of you to support our

Parent/Teacher Organization. The P.T.O. is very active in our school and we would like each and every one of you to become involved. With the support of the P.T.O., we are able to provide your children with many additional learning resources in our classrooms.
