Welcome to Autodesk SketchBook Pro Version 2010 (for PC and Mac)

What's New The following improvements and enhancements have been made to Autodesk SketchBook Pro:

Lagoon preferencesPreferences for changing not only the lagoon, but also marking menus have been added.Create your own marking menus; populate the lagoon with the options you use mostfrequently. If you never use a tool, take it out and replace it with one you do. This tab givesyou complete control over these domains.

In addition to all this, now when youre working, you can right-click to access virtualfloating lagoon. It uses the setting from the Lagoon Preferences .

These setting are saved to an . xml file, so you can save them to a portable hard drive, takethem with you to use on any machine, and always have your custom setup.

C ustom marking menusThe next thing you can do is customize the marking menu with an icon in the lagoon, adding tools that you commonly use. Once done, you can use clutch keys or right-click toaccess these custom marking menus without visiting the lagoon.

In the Lagoon Preferences , at the bottom of the Default SketchBook Tools list, any Do-It-Yourself brushes created are listed. Now, you can add them to any custom marking menu.

R ulersTwo rulers have been introduced, a straight edge (hotkey R ) and an elliptical (hotkey E ).

Only one of them can be used at a time. They can be accessed through hotkeys, which areused to show and hide the rulers. Before painting, the rulers will display guidelines;however, once you start painting, they disappear. Once you finish painting, they reappear. The last location of a ruler is saved, so that the next time you access a ruler it appears at thesame place.

When a ruler is activated, at the top of the canvas, a hub appears. It provides the X and Y positional coordinates, along with the angle of rotation. The elliptical ruler containsadditional A and B coordinates for the distance of each side from the center of the ellipse. As changes are made to the rulers, these values update.

NOTE For optimal results, use a stylus. With the mouse, the results may not be as

accurate. If using a mouse, drawing slowly will reduce problems.

PencilThe maximum size of the pencil increased from 2B to 14B for ease of use with images thathave a large dpi.

    Blur

The Blur brush softens the areas its used on, making it appear out of focus. OpentheBrush Palette and select the Blur brush. Paint over an area to blur it.

SharpenThe Sharpen brush makes an image look crisper; sharpening the areas its used on. Openthe Brush Palette and select the Sharpen brush. Paint over an area to sharpen it.

Brush Manager U se the Brush Manager to organize and manage your Do-It-Yourself brushes. Click-drag tomove a brush and change its position in the palette.

Texture BrushOnce a Do-It-Yourself brush is created, a texture can be added to it, creating a texture

brush. You can set the shape and/or color and make a texture from a rotated stroke or capture something on your canvas to use as a texture. See Create a Do-It-Yourself brush.

    C reate a texture brush

In the Brush Properties of a Do-It-Yourself brush, you can create a texture brush bysketching a design and capturing it. The captured texture can also be rotated. Whencapturing a texture, one of the following Custom Texture settings can be selected:

    3/11

Shape + Colors U ses the current paint color, as well as the selected shape, tocreate your texture. Whenever the texture brush is used, it uses the color set duringcreation.

Shape Creates a texture brush with no assigned color. Each time the texture brushis used, a different color can be set.R otate to Stroke Dynamically rotates the texture in the direction of the stoke.

NOTE When capturing the texture shape, SketchBook uses the current size of theDo-It-Yourself brush. If the complete shape is not captured, resize the Do-It-Yourself brush, then capture the shape again.

D o-It-Yourself Brush Now, you can export and import Do-It-Yourself brushes. They can be shared and takenwith you to use on other machines. Email brushes to friends to try. You created a brush on a

Mac and want to use it on Windows no problem! Export the brush, save it on a jumpdrive, then on the other machine, import it.

    Export a D o-It-Yourself brush

After a Do-It-Yourself brush has been made, you may want to save it to use again or share with colleagues. The Ex port button, in Brush Properties , allows people workingon different platforms to share brushes. You can also bring these brushes to a client or use when working on another machine.

    1. Create a Do-It-Yourself brush.2. Either double-click the Do-It-Yourself brush in the Brush Palette or select

Show Brush Properties .3. At the bottom of Brush Properties , click Ex port . This opens Save As .4. Name the file and click Save . By default, the file will be saved in the

Custo mBr ushes folder in SketchBook Pro; however, you can change this.

    Import a D o-It-Yourself brush

After a Do-It-Yourself brush has been exported, you can import one of your own it touse again or try one created by a colleague. It doesnt matter what the platform was thatthe brush was created on.

    1. Select any brush, other than a Do-It-Yourself brush.

    2. Open the Brush Palette by clicking the brush in the Lagoon .

    3. In the Brush Palette , click New Do-It-Yourself Brush . This opens the CreateDo-It-Yourself Brush dialog.

    4. Click Import . This opens Open . By default, it opens to Custo mBr ushes folder in SketchBook Pro.

    5. If the brush is not in the SketchBook Pro Custo mBr ushes folder, you willnot be able to import it. Move the file to this folder and try again.

    6. Select a custom brush file and click Open . The brush will appear in the BrushPalette .

SymmetryThe Symmetry tool enables you to turn symmetry on and off as you sketch, using hotkeys. The X hotkey displays a vertical axis of symmetry and Y a horizontal axis. Anything drawnon one side of the axis will be mirrored. The axis of symmetry will always appear at thecenter of the canvas. Rotating, scaling, and panning within the canvas alter where the axisis placed.

NOTE If you move the canvas or the contents of the canvas within the pane, the axisof symmetry remain in the center of the canvas.

Add Image: import into a new layer

If you have an image you would like to add that needs to be imported to a new layer, in thegeneral preferences, check Add Image: import into a new layer .

Add an image to a new layer

    1. Select E dit > Preferences to open the Preferences window.2. In the General tab, ensure there is a check next to Add Image: import into a

new layer .3. Click OK . Now, when you use File > Add Image.. ., the image that is imported

    appears on a new layer.

Non-proportional scaleL ayers and selected items can both be non-proportionally scaled. You can scale in onedirection, instead of uniformly.

To non-proportionately scale the layer, in the TransformLayer puck highlight the top of the middle circle, then do one of the following motions:

Drag up to stretch the layer length. Drag down to squish the layer length. Drag to the right to stretch the layer width. Drag to the left to squish the layer width.

For selected items, in the TransformLayer puck highlight the top of the middle circle, thendo one of the following motions:

Drag up to stretch the item. Drag down to squish the items length. Drag to the right to stretch the items width. Drag to the left to squish the items width.

R otate canvasWhen drawing, use this to reposition or rotate your sketch to create a more comfortable

brush stroking angle. Think of this as rotating your paper when drawing. U se either of thefollowing rotate canvas functions to change the orientation of the image.

R otate your canvasH old down the Spacebar , mouse over the rotate ring of the puck that appears, thenright-click and drag to freely pivot the canvas.

Autodesk AreaThis new feature, found in the H elp menu, takes you to Area (http://area.autodesk.com/sketchbook ), a place where you can link to SketchBook Pro andother Autodesk communities.

    Buy SketchBook Pro

This new feature, also found in the H elp menu, takes you to our e-store, where you can purchase SketchBook Pro, from anywhere in the world.

Improvements Editable R GB fields have been added to the Color Palette . They allow you to edit

    the individual RGB values.

Nine shades of gray have been added as default colors. The 20% and 60% grays can be found in Colors on the Lagoon . To add others to Colors , go to the Lagoon

Preferences . They will be listed in the Colors section of the Default SketchBook Tools list.

    K nown issues

    Performance Issues on Vista

There are Vista performance issues due to a conflict between SketchBook Pro andVistas Input Services. These services automatically start up whenever a tabletdriver is installed and interacts with the tablet for hand writing recognition andmore. The services affect performance, the mapping of stylus buttons, and more. For ideal performance when using SketchBook, Input Services should be disabled.

NOTE Once you restart your machine, Vistas Input Services turn back on.

    To disable Input Services :

    1. Go to the Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools .

  • 8/6/2019 Welcome to Autodesk Sketch Book

    6/11

    2. Double-click the Services shortcut to open the Services window, which lists allthe services available through Vista.

    3. Scroll down the list and right-click Tablet PC Input Service .

    4. Select Stop from the menu provided. Input Services is now disabled and your

    Wacom driver takes over.

    To further performance improvements :

In your Control Panel , turn off Pens and Input Devices . Select Control Panel >Pen and Input Devices > Pen Options > Pen Buttons > Use the pen button as aright-click equivalent .

Select E dit > Preferences to open the Preferences window. In the General tab, inthe Graphics(After application restart) section, deselect E nable R otate Canvas .Click OK . Restart Sketchbook to improve performance.

Right-click the Vista application icon to select Properties . In the window thatappears, check Disable desktop compositing. Some Vista users may experience a black window upon startup. Select E dit >

Preferences to open the Preferences window. In the General tab, in the Graphics(After application restart) section, deselect E nable R otate Canvas . Click OK .Restart Sketchbook to correct this issue.

NOTE When E nable R otate Canvas is deselected, R otate Canvas is notavailable.

The floating marking menu invoked by the stylus button (or right mouse button) onTablet PCs running Vista is not accessible, due to Vistas input services. For desktop systems, disabling Vistas input services corrects this issue, but for TabletPC users, there is no solution.

    Other Issues

A lag may occur between the cursor and brush preview. If a non-proportionally scaled selection is rotated, the center of rotation is offset.

R elease notes When the window is resized, it may appear black. If you move the window so most

of it is off the visible part of your monitor, then back, the issue is corrected. Undo If the number of undos is changed in the preferences, there is no effect untila new document it created. It is recommended that you restart SketchBook.

Te x ture Brush The Shape + Color Te x ture Brush applies paint anywhere on alayer, even areas with transparency locked. The pixels in transparency locked areasare set to remain transparent, so paint cannot be added to them; however, the Shape+ Color Te x ture Brush does not respect this.

  • 8/6/2019 Welcome to Autodesk Sketch Book

    7/11

Note The Shape Te x ture Brush does not have this problem.

Non-proportional Scale and R otate These transforms cannot be combined. If you need to do this combination, follow these steps; otherwise, there could beadverse results:

    1. Non-proportionally scale a selection.2. Deselect the selected object.3. Make a new selection and rotate it.

R otate Canvas and Zoom The Wacom touch strip uses the current cursor position as the point it zooms from. H owever, when using R otate Canvas , if youmust use Zoom , be aware that the current cursor position will not be used for thezoom point.

Symmetry When you have been using Symmetry and try to resize the canvas, theline of symmetry can be thrown off center. Creating a new layer sometimes corrects

this; however, if it doesnt, you will need to restart SketchBook.
