8Welcome to Dubrovnik – a city of art, culture,

tradition, sport, films and ro-mance, and of course a city for all seasons. It is a year of cel-ebration in Dubrovnik, a year of anniversaries. The iconic Dubrovnik Summer Festival, which brings drama, ballet, concerts, culture and much more to the city, is celebrat-ing its 70th anniversary and of course has prepared a fan-tastic line-up for this summer. And the city is also celebrat-ing the 600th anniversary of Orlando, one of the most im-portant icons of the entire city. We are looking forward to an-other great year of tourism in Dubrovnik with many new flights opening the doors of the city to a whole new mar-ket. This year Dubrovnik welcomes direct flights from America, with connections between Philadelphia, and the Dubrovnik Tourist Board has initiated a marketing cam-paign with American Air-lines to promote these flights and the city as a destination. The interest in holidaying in Dubrovnik in the US is great and with these new flights we can expect even more Ameri-can travellers. And Dubrovnik is a city for all seasons - At the Dubrovnik Tourist Board, we are active-ly engaged in negotiating with international airlines to in-crease the number of flights and destinations that the

city is connected with during the winter months. We have been successful this winter in introducing flights to sev-en different European cities with nineteen flights a week this past winter. And with our headline events, such as the Dubrovnik Good Food Fes-tival in October and the Du-brovnik Winter Festival over the Christmas and New Year period there is certainly plen-ty to do and see in the winter months. The face of Dubrovnik tour-ism has been drastically changing over the past few years and in line with these new challenges the City of Dubrovnik has introduced a project entitled “Respect the City.” This project has the aim to maintain sustainable tour-ism and has both short and long term goals, so far the re-sults have proved very effec-tive. The complete introduc-tion of this project “Respect the City” is expected to oc-cur over the next three years. But it is important to point out that after the very first year the international media and press have already rec-ognized the impact and are pointing out that Dubrovnik is a great example of sustain-able tourism.Once again I would like to take this opportunity to wel-come you all to our City, enjoy your time here and take a lit-tle piece of Dubrovnik home with you in your hearts.

8A bowling spectac-le in the heart of the

Old City of Dubrovnik last week. Who would have thought that bow-ling could be so fast and furious? In front of the Rector’s Palace an inter-national bowling tour-nament of precision and speed, with participants from all over the world taking part. The popula-rity of bowling, or boules, is confirmed by the fact that there are over 600 clubs in the country and around 7,000 registered players. Last weekend’s boule event was orga-nised by the Dubrovnik

Boule Association along with the Dubrovnik-Ne-retva Boule Associati-on and the City of Dub-rovnik. This attractive discipline of the game that was held in Dub-rovnik brought inter-est from the public with a large crowd gathering to watch the sport. The-re was also recognition of the event from abro-ad with the head of the World Federation, Fre-dic Ruis, and the Secre-tary General of the Asso-ciation of Bowling Sports, Cristophe Levaillant, also both attending the Dub-rovnik boules event.

Die Beliebtheit von Bowling oder Boule wird durch die Tatsache bestätigt, dass es im Land über 600 Vereine und rund 7.000 registrierte Spieler gibt. Die Boule-Veranstal-tung am vergangenen Wo-chenende wurde von der Dubrovnik Boule Asso-

ciation zusammen mit der Dubrovnik-Neretva Boule Association und der Stadt Dubrovnik organisiert. Diese attraktive Disziplin des Spiels, die in Dubrov-nik stattfand, weckte das Interesse des Publikums bei einer großen Menge, die sich versammelte, um den Sport zu verfolgen. international meeting with re-presentatives of numerous inter-national financial institutions, is being held in Dubrovnik last weekend for the 25th time, and is organized by the Croatian Natio-nal Bank (CNB). Boris Vujčić, the Governor of the Croatian Natio-nal Bank (CNB), recalled the first year of war-time conferences and added that over time the congress has become a significant venue in the world. “During the last 25 ye-ars some of the largest names of economic theory and in the area of economic policy management have been involved in this cong-ress,” said Governor Vujcic. The theme of this year’s conference is

economic policy formation at the time of populism. Also a presen-tation on how Croatia is a good candidate for the introduction of the euro as the official curren-cy. On this occasion, Boris Vujcic, announced the letter of intent for Croatia to enter into the European Exchange Rate Mechanism. “Be-fore close cooperation with the European Central Bank in the conduct of supervision of credit institutions, it is necessary to test the assets of Croatian banks. We expect this test, as far as the Croa-tian banks are concerned, to pass very well. As I always point out – the liquidity of Croatian banks is such that it leaves no doubt that it is a quality and stable system” ad-ded the CNB Governor.

Wir gehen davon aus, dass dieser Test für die kroatischen Banken sehr gut verläuft. Wie ich immer wie-der betone, ist die Liquidität der kroatischen Banken so hoch, dass kein Zweifel daran besteht, dass es sich um ein qualitatives und stabi-les System handelt “, fügte der Gou-verneur der CNB hinzu.

vel bucket list and that they just love it. According to her official website, after taking the Miss Uni-verse Australia title in June 2017, Olivia’s growth has continued to escalate. A qualified speech pa-thologist, model and budding ar-tist, Olivia is a keen ambassador for positive body image and men-tal health awareness. Having re-cently opened up publicly about her own mental health strug-gles, Olivia is using her platform and social media reach to facilita-te discussion around depression, anxiety, and disordered eating with the hope that it will help ot-her young Australians overcome their personal battles.

Pašalić, who is a lifetime fan of Hajduk Split, married Grbeša in the church of Ciovo, and

the guests were then mo-ved to a sailboat where they celebrated long into the night. Pašalić is actu-ally a Chelsea player but is on loan to the Seria A club Atalanta. He began his ca-reer at Hajduk Split befo-re moving to Chelsea for a reported £3 million in 2014. Chelsea loaned him to Elche, Monaco, Milan, Spartak Moscow and then Atalanta. Pašalić made his senior international debut for Croatia in 2014.

To keep their new prop-erty, the citizens of Dubrovnik immediately planned the construction of special fortifica-tions in Ston and Mali Ston that both defend-ed the towns and the peninsular of Pelješac. The walls of Ston are the largest construction venture outside the Republic of Dubrovnik. They consist of walls of Ston and Mali Ston, the Great Wall, the three fortresses, ten cir-cular, thirty-one square towers and a square and six semi-circular bastions. The height of

the walls is between 5 and 10 meters. Today around four and a half kilometres in length they connect Ston and Mali Ston and are one of the longest fortification systems in Europe. The walls of Ston were a massive architecture and construction feat. Originally 7000-meters long (22 965 ft.), they consist of several parts; the Stone city walls, the Mali Ston city walls and the Big wall with its three forts. 8Dubrovnik is certain-ly on the celebrity map.

Over the past few years we’ve had many household names in the city. And although it recent years the numbers of stars that have visited Du-brovnik has blossomed the city has a long history of celebrity guests. Elisabeth Taylor and Richard Burton spent a romantic stay in the city in the 60’s, Sophie Lau-ren dropped by and many Kings and Queens have en-joyed the crystal clear Adri-atic Sea. More recently Mi-chael Douglas, Catharine Zeta Jones, Goldie Hawn, Kurt Russell, Richard Gere, Nick Nolte, Tom Cruise, Sir Roger Moore, Tina Turner...the list goes on and on. One of the biggest names in re-cent years was Beyonce who drifted into town. She sailed into town on Eric Clapton’s yacht with her boyfriend Jayz and they spent the after-noon having fun on jet skis.

And the diva Gloria Gaynor spent a “working” holiday in the city and performed to a packed audience. The world of fashion also enjoyed the view on the Stradun as mega designer Giorgio Armani in-spected the shopping in the Old City possibly looking for inspiration for his next col-lection. An old favourite of Dubrovnik is Bernie Eccel-stone who often drops the anchor of his mega-yacht in front of the old city. After being introduced to the city by his former wife Slavica, Bernie has become a firm fan of Dubrovnik. And the A-list Hollywood stars are choosing Dubrovnik as their summer hideaway. Michael Fassbender spent a few days sailing around the Adriatic Sea, Francis Ford Coppola was in town, born again star Mickey Rourke met the mass-es and Richard Gere admired the architecture and Ashley Judd even filmed a new se-ries in the streets. FC Bay-ern Munich goalkeeper Ma-nuel Neuer enjoyed the views from the cable car and Jon Bon Jovi spent a family holi-day in Cavtat.

SPOT THE GAME OF THRONES ACTORSFor the past five years Du-brovnik has been a loca-tion for the popular Game of Thrones series. As the city is compact it is normally possi-ble to get relatively close to the action. As this could well be the last season we are ex-pecting the cast and crew to be here for a longer period of time. According to legend Richard the Lion-Heart was cast ashore here af-ter being shipwrecked in 1192 while return-ing from the Cru-sades. The vow he made to build a church on the

spot where he came ashore should he be saved was kept at least in part. Although he came ashore in Lokrum, at the request of the people of Dubrovnik, he agreed to have the church built in the city it-self. an influencer?I would never self-proclaim myself an influencer because I believe that term refers to what others may call me. I express myself through my


travels, and personal voice, and I hope that sharing my relatable life experiences will inspire others to get out there in the world and see something new, experience something they haven’t be-fore.

How hard is to make a perfect photo/video?Gosh, that’s a tough ques-tion. As a content creator, it is undeniable that I strive to make a video, or take a pho-to that everyone will think to themselves “wow, that was amazing!” At the end of the day, I strive to make a video (or Instagram photo) that is 1. Meaningful to me 2. Oth-ers can relate to, and 3. Is adding some kind of value to the world.

You’ve recently visited Du-brovnik, did you enjoy it? Dubrovnik was incredible and all the more special because I got to experi-ence it with my family. We have Croatian herit-age (as you may have no-ticed from my last name)

and my Croatian grandfa-ther passed away this sum-mer. In celebration of my late grandfather, couple

with my father’s 60th, our family decided to take a trip together to Croatia.

What was your favourite place?My favourite place was Gruz market! My family loves to cook so the first thing we did, even before explor-ing Old town, was head to Gruz market to stock up on all kinds of seafood, fresh vegetables and fruits. We love to get the feel for local provisioning and going to the open market is always a great way to get acquainted with the locals.

How did you like the people?The people in Dubrovnik are wonderful. They were immediately friendly and happy to help us as we made our way to Gruz mar-ket, or walking around Old town. We particularly made friends with every one of our servers at each restau-rant or cafe we’d stop at. That was the most interac-

tion we had with Croatians, and we found that they are abrupt and matter-of-fact, with a hilarious dry sense of humour.

Do you have any special mem-ory?We met an old woman at the market who we got along with almost imme-diately. We couldn’t speak any Croatian, and her Eng-lish was limited, however we got through conversa-tions by pointing or miming. Those memories are always the best, when you can con-nect with someone without speaking the language.You have Croatian roots, so is visit Croatia a special ex-perience for you?I have been to Croatia twice now and the reason I came back is because it’s such a beautiful and unique coun-try that is dear to my heart, both from nostalgia of my first trip, and because of my heritage that I’m so proud of. I’m so happy our family was able experience this amaz-ing country and learn a bit more about where our roots came from.

8The Old City of Dubrovnik is a self-contained city, a city

surrounded by ancient stone walls. The Stradun, the main street, runs through the centre of the city like an arrow. It is one of the busiest streets and other side streets run parallel with it. It runs from East to West and is around 300 metres in length. There entrances into the Old City, one at the East – Ploce Gate, one at the West – Pile Gate and to the North – Buza Gate. The busiest is Pile Gate where all the buses arrive, if you are coming by car then the Buza Gate is the easiest...but there are lots of steps. The Stradun is the lowest point in the whole city, eve-rything leads up from this street.

1The Dubrovnik Synagogue is the oldest Sefardic synagogue still in use today in the world and the second oldest synagogue in Europe. It is said to have been established in 1352, but gained legal status in the city in 1408.

The Republic of Ragusa was a maritime republic centred on the city of Dubrovnik that existed from 1358 to 1808. It reached its commercial peak in the 15th and the 16th centuries, before being conquered by Napoleon’s French Empire and formally annexed by the Napoleonic Kingdom of Italy in 1808. It had a population of about 30,000 people, out of whom 5,000 lived within the city walls. Its motto was “Non bene pro toto libertas venditur auro”, which translated from Latin means “Liberty is not well sold for all the gold”

Die Republik Ragusa war eine maritime Republik rund um die Stadt Dubrovnik, die von 1358 bis 1808 bestand. Im 15. und 16. Sand beaches are rare so be prepared

8Although there are plen-ty of beaches in and

around Dubrovnik there are very, very few that are true sandy beaches. The vast ma-jority of beaches are either light shingle or pebbles. And whilst you will see the locals skip over the pebbles as if they were walking on a plush car-pet tourist’s feet don’t tend to be so hardened. Rubber shoes are a must, especially for small children, if you want to enter the sea with ease. You might stand out a bit from the crowd but scrabbling down the beach like your walking on broken glass will also look a little undignified.

Beware of black spines

8On many beaches, es-pecially isolated ones or

ones with many rocks, you will see small black circles lingering on the seabed. These are sea-urchins and are a sign that the sea water in that lo-cation is very clean. Howev-er there is a downside, if you accidentally tread on you’ll

have a nasty surprise. The urchins are basically balls of black needles that stick out in all directions. If you are un-lucky enough to stand on one the tiny needles will break off into your foot. Asides from be-ing very painful there is no further risk. The best way to extract these needles is to el-evate your foot and to rub it with plenty of olive oil; they will then slowly come out by themselves. Again wearing rubber shoes will protect you.

8Try to avoid jumping di-rectly into the sea after

spending hours sunbathing. Gently, gently is the golden rule. You need to give your body some time to adjust to the cooler sea tempera-ture. Even though you may be swimming in the middle of the summer when the sea temperature is likely to be 25 degrees Celsius the difference in temperature from the sun is great. Ease yourself in and give yourself time, don’t for-get there are at least two or three cases every year of tour-ists suffering heart attacks in the sea. Why risk it.

Da-her sind Gummischuhe abso-lut notwendig, insbesondere für kleine Kinder, wen Sie ohne Mühen ins Meer gehen wollen. Vielleicht stechen Sie so etwas aus der Menge hervor aber den Strand entlangzustolpern als ob sie auf Glasscherben gehen ist andererseits auch nicht be-sonders würdevoll.

Hüten Sie sich vor schwarzen Stacheln

8An vielen Stränden, insbe-sondere an einsamen oder

solchen mit vielen Felsen, kön-nen Sie kleine, schwarze Kre-ise am Meeresboden sehen. Das sind Seeigel und sie sind ein Zeichen dafür, dass das Wasser an diesem Ort sehr sauber ist. Jedoch hat dies auch eine neg-ative Seite. Wenn Sie versehen-tlich auf einen Seeigel steigen, werden Sie eine böse Überra-

schung erleben. Die Igel sind im Grunde Bälle voller schwarzer Nadeln die in alle Richtungen wegstehen. Wenn Sie das Pech haben und auf einen drauf-steigen, brechen die Stacheln in Ihrem Fuß ab. Doch abgesehen davon, dass es sehr schmerzhaft ist, besteht keine weitere Gefahr. Die beste Art um diese Stacheln zu entfernen ist es, den Fuß hochzuhalten und ihn mit viel Olivenöl einzureiben; so kom-men Sie langsam von selbst raus. Auch hier kann Sie das Tragen von Gummischuhen schützen.

The monastery in which the ex-hibition is held is one of the few reconstructed Renais-sance buildings on the is-land of Lopud, the former strategic shipbuilding site of the Dubrovnik Repub-lic. The monastery today represents a new vibrant cultural centre. A guitarist who has conquered the world and an opera festival as the musical season continues8On Monday the 24th

of June in the atrium of the atmospheric Rector’s Palace, the guitarist Mak Grgić will perform a recit-al. Grgic will perform Bach’s Adagio & Presto from Violin Sonata No.1, Rodrigo Toc-cata, Morricone’s “Gabri-el’s oboe” from the movie Mission and the soundtrack of the movie “The Good, The Bad and The Ugly” fol-lowed by five Macedonian works by Miroslav Tadic and other works that will show Grgić’s versatility. The con-cert starts at 9:00 pm. Touted as a “gifted young guitarist” by the New York Times, and “a guitarist to keep an eye on” by the Washington Post, Mak Gr-gic is emerging as a star on the worldwide stage. An expansive and adventur-ous repertoire attests to his versatility and wide-ranging interests: from the Baroque and Renaissance to music of the cinema; from ethnic music of his native Balkans to extreme avant-garde and microtonal music, Mak’s extraordinary talents and tastes as a soloist, collabo-rator, and recording artist are fuelled by his curiosity, imagination, and boundless energy. Midsummer Scene Festival 2019 – Season of Love and Hate marks our sixth edition with Romeo & Juliet as our headline production. Every year we strive to enrich our programme and open the ancient City to international artists. This year we have the joint pro-gramme with the Dubrovnik Symphony Orchestra and we continue the successful collaboration with The House of Marin Držić – the museum dedicated to life and works of a major Renaissance playwright and Du-brovnik native. 8 ”TINO PAT-TIER A” is

named after and organized in the memory of the world famous ten-or Tino Pattiera, born on 27 June 1890 in Cavtat, a town situated about twenty kilo-metres away from Dubrovnik, where he died on 24 April 1966. Tino Patti-era was one of ma-jor popular singers at the opera houses both in Europe and worldwide in the first half of the 20th century. He was the leading singer at the Royal Saxon Court Opera in Dresden and member of the Berlin State Opera. A tenor of a specific voice, he masterfully inter-preted lyrical and dramatic title roles in many operas.

KORČULAWhat to see... / Sehenswürdig-keitenOld city of Korcula - The old city is surrounded by walls, and the streets are arranged in a herring-bone pattern allowing free circulation of air but protecting against strong winds. Korcula is tightly built on a promontory that guards the narrow sound between the island and the mainland. Building outside the walls was forbidden until the 18th century, and the wooden drawbridge was only replaced in 1863.

Arboretum in Trsteno - Ten kilometres from Slano, in the direction of Dubrovnik, lies Trsteno where the Arboretum was founded out of the estate of the family of Ivan Gučetić in 1948. Their summer house and gardens were established in the 16th century as a harmonious melding of architecture and nature. Today, the Arboretum is a preserved venue of botanical architectural culture.

Arboretum in Trsteno – Zehn Kilometer von Slano entfernt, in Richtung Du-brovnik, liegt Trsteno wo das Arboretum 1948 auf dem Gut der Familie von Ivan Gučetić begründet wurde. WHAT TO SEE...Old city of Korcula - The old city is sur-rounded by walls, and the streets are arranged in a herringbone pattern allowing free circulation of air but protecting against strong winds. Korcula is tightly built on a promontory that guards the narrow sound between the island and the mainland. Building outside the walls was forbidden until the 18th century, and the wooden drawbridge was only replaced in 1863. All of Korcula’s narrow streets are stepped with the notable exception of the street running alongside the south-eastern wall. The street is called the Street of Thoughts as one did not have to worry about the steps.

OGULIN: IVANAS MÄRCHENHAUSDas Märchenhaus, das nach einer der bekanntesten kroatischen Schrifts-stellerinnen, Ivana Brlić Mažuranić, benannt wurde, befindet sich im alten Schloss Frankopan in der Stadt Ogu-lin, in der Ivana 1874 gebore wurde. AN DER GRENZE ZWEIER REICHEDie Stadt-Festung Karlovac wurde 1579 gegründet, als die Grenze des Osmani-schen Reiches, zum Nachteil der Habs-burgermonarchie, auf die Flüsse Kupa und Korana verlegt wurde. Ihre abweh-rende und historische Aufgabe hat die Stadt Karlovac erfüllt: als Befehlszent-rum der Vojna Krajna hielt sie allen An-griffen stand und behielt ihre militäri-sche Kraft auch in den Jahrhunderten, als die Grenze wieder in Richtung Os-ten verlegt wurde. Das historische Zen-trum der Stadt, das von ihren Einwoh-nern Zvijezda (Stern) genannt wird, ist von tiefen Schanzen umgeben, in die bei Gefahr Wasser aus dem nahelie-genden Fluss Kupa eingelassen wur-de. Der Josip ban Jelačić Hauptplatz war damals der wichtigste Treffpunkt und der Ort, an dem die wichtigsten Ereignisse stattfanden.Karlovac ist als Stadt der Parkanlagen bekannt, die Stern-Stadt, die Stadt des Bieres…doch es ist zugleich eine

Rafting auf den erwähnten Flüssen ist ein interessanter Weg, um die un-berührte Natur Kroatiens zu erleben.“•••OGULIN: CASA DELLA FAVOLA DI IVANALa Casa della favola di una delle più note scrittrici croate, Ivana Brlić Mažuranić, è situata nel vecchio castel-lo dei Frankopan a Ogulin, città in cui Ivana nacque nel 1874. Nella Casa de-lla favola si trovano l'esposizione mul-timediale permanente, la biblioteca, lo spazio multifunzionale per i workshop e il negozio di souvenir. L'esposizione permanente è divisa in alcune parti, e ognuna porta il nome di una delle fiabe di Ivana – il Bosco miracoloso, i Fuochi, i Corridoi incantati ecc. GROTTE DI BARAĆLe Grotte di Barać si trovano a 6 km a est da Rakovica (strada maestra Za-gabria-Spalato), a mezzo chilometro a ovest dal villaggio Nova Kršlja. Gli in-gressi in tutte e tre le grotte si trovano al lato nord di Baraćeva Brina. In fondo alla Brina, tra gli ingressi nelle grotte, giace la sorgente Baraćevac.KARLOVAC: CITTÀ DEI QUATTRO FIUMIKarlovac fu eretta nel ‘500 per la di-fesa dai conquistatori turchi come un singolare nucleo urbano in forma della stella esagonale. Oltre a Karlovac solo due città in Europa hanno un piano si-mile (Palmanova in Italia e Novy Zam-ky in Slovacchia). La costruzione della fortezza iniziò il 13 luglio 1579, e oggi quella data è celebrata come la festa della città. La fortezza fu costruita sul podere della famiglia Zrinski ai piedi della vecchia città di Dubovac, e prese il nome Karlovac o Karlstadt per ono-rare il suo fondatore, arciduca austria-co Karl. Le specie esposte nell’ac-quario di Karlovac rap-presentano il corso del tipico fiume carsico e danno una descrizione dettagliata, interessan-te e educativa del mera-viglioso mondo di acque dolci. AN DER GRENZE ZWEIER REICHEDie Stadt-Festung Karlovac wurde 1579 gegründet, als die Grenze des Osmani-schen Reiches, zum Nachteil der Habs-burgermonarchie, auf die Flüsse Kupa und Korana verlegt wurde. Ihre abweh-rende und historische Aufgabe hat die Stadt Karlovac erfüllt: als Befehlszent-rum der Vojna Krajna hielt sie allen An-griffen stand und behielt ihre militäri-sche Kraft auch in den Jahrhunderten, als die Grenze wieder in Richtung Os-ten verlegt wurde. Das historische Zen-trum der Stadt, das von ihren Einwoh-nern Zvijezda (Stern) genannt wird, ist von tiefen Schanzen umgeben, in die bei Gefahr Wasser aus dem nahelie-genden Fluss Kupa eingelassen wur-de. Nella Casa de-lla favola si trovano l'esposizione mul-timediale permanente, la biblioteca, lo spazio multifunzionale per i workshop e il negozio di souvenir. GROTTE DI BARAĆLe Grotte di Barać si trovano a 6 km a est da Rakovica (strada maestra Za-gabria-Spalato), a mezzo chilometro a ovest dal villaggio Nova Kršlja. Gli in-gressi in tutte e tre le grotte si trovano al lato nord di Baraćeva Brina. In fondo alla Brina, tra gli ingressi nelle grotte, giace la sorgente Baraćevac.KARLOVAC: CITTÀ DEI QUATTRO FIUMIKarlovac fu eretta nel ‘500 per la di-fesa dai conquistatori turchi come un singolare nucleo urbano in forma della stella esagonale. Oltre a Karlovac solo due città in Europa hanno un piano si-mile (Palmanova in Italia e Novy Zam-ky in Slovacchia). La costruzione della fortezza iniziò il 13 luglio 1579, e oggi quella data è celebrata come la festa della città. La fortezza fu costruita sul podere della famiglia Zrinski ai piedi della vecchia città di Dubovac, e prese il nome Karlovac o Karlstadt per ono-rare il suo fondatore, arciduca austria-co Karl.
