Enhanced Virtual LearningThere are important distinctions between the remote learning that occurred in the spring and the Virtual Learning Experience that is planned for the 2020-2021 school year. Some of the exciting features of the Virtual Learning Experience includes a daily morning meeting and engaging in activities that promote empathy and an understanding for how each student’s personal attributes matter to and impacts those around them.

We will be utilizing Google Classroom, which will serve as a virtual classroom or hub, holding all class assignments, activities, quizzes, tests, and more. Students and teachers can also communicate with each other via Google Classroom and other district approved platforms. We hope that these instructional tools will offer teachers, students and parents a streamlined approach to teaching and learning this fall.

Students will receive feedback on their work, and teachers will monitor and track students’ engagement.Teachers and/or the school principal will reach out with key updates and announcements, using translation and interpretation services, about the coming week. Teachers will be available during office hours to engage with students and families.

Virtual Learning Schedule❏ Teachers will schedule learning opportunities for students in each of

the following areas: ELA, Math, Science, Social Students, Office Hours❏ Special Area and Related Arts teachers should meet with each

distinct group of students for live instruction. (20-40 minutes/week)❏ The Pre K Learning Schedule reflects how students would spend time

during the school day. ❏ Our school-wide instructional schedule ensures that there are times

in the day that students are scheduled for the supports that they need—academic and behavior.

Virtual Attendance Procedure The district’s attendance policy remains the same in the 2020-2021 school year. Whether choosing Hybrid or Virtual learning, students are expected to attend class each day that school is in session.

If your student is unable to participate in virtual learning due to illness or other excused reason, please mark them absent via Genesis, send an email to the school nurse [email protected], or leave a message at 908.851.6455. Only parents/guardians may call the nurse's answering machine to report attendance.

Students who are unable to actively participate in remote learning at no fault of their own due to lack of technology or other required resources will be coded as an excused absence and given the opportunity to complete make-up work provided that the teacher is notified ASAP.

Assessment: i-ReadyThis year, our students will be taking the i-Ready Diagnostic. The main purpose of this assessment is to help us learn more about

what our students already know and what they are ready to learn. This will help us plan for effective instruction and support them

better.

Page 15: Welcome to Franklin Elementary School

Assessment: i-Ready The Diagnostic Testing will begin on Monday, 10/5/2020.

Session 1 - 9:30-10:30 - Monitored by classroom teacher Session 2 - 5:30-6:30 - Monitored by families

We will not be on Google Classroom for the evening session so we will need your support in monitoring.

Page 16: Welcome to Franklin Elementary School

Assessment: i-ReadyIt’s very important to NOT HELP your student.

The Diagnostic is about showing us what your student knows and what they are ready to learn.

They should not receive help because it could provide me with misleading data.

Students will receive some challenging questions. That’s okay. They will know the answers to about half the questions, while the other half may be more difficult.

When they are stuck, please do not help them!

Help that can alter the results looks like: reading passages (unless specified in an IEP or 504), helping to solve a problem, giving a strategy, and hinting at or giving the answer.

Page 17: Welcome to Franklin Elementary School

Assessment: i-Ready You CAN, however, offer support and motivation.

Please help monitor and engage your child:

Watch the student’s activity. They may look like they are taking the Diagnostic, but they may be opening other windows.

Confirm completion: When students are done, they will receive a congratulatory message and see lessons.

Make sure they log off after completing the assessment.
