welcome to grace: we rejoice over your presence this day
TRANSCRIPT
WELCOME TO GRACE: We rejoice over your presence this day as we gather in
the Name and in the worship of our Lord. If you are a GUEST with us today, we
hope you feel welcome in our church family and invite you to worship with us
again. If you are interested in membership at Grace or want to know more about
our church and our faith, please indicate your interest on the ATTENDANCE
FORM in the pew.
Grace’s Mission
T Sharing God’s Grace T Living His Word T Making Disciples
Grace Lutheran Church is one of more than six thousand congregations of the
Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod.
We Believe the Bible is the inspired Word of God and the sole source for all
Christian teaching and practice. II Timothy 3:16
We Believe “God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that
whosever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” John 3:16
We Believe “by grace you have been saved through faith and that not of yourselves;
it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.” Ephesians 2:8-9
We Believe our relationship with everyone is based upon Jesus’ words: “Love one
another as I have loved you.” John 15:12
Child Care We care about your children. We encourage parents with small
children to help them participate in our worship. We ask you to have your children
go to the restroom and get a drink before the service, and refrain from leaving
during worship, unless there is an emergency. We have available a cry room
equipped with sound located at the back of the sanctuary. Children’s bulletins with
activities are available. A nursery is available for children age 3 and under. Ask an
usher for directions.
Hearing Impaired For those who need assistance, please ask an usher for a
wireless hearing aid. They are easy to use.
WORSHIP FOLDER TWELFTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST
AUGUST 15, 2021 “THE WORDS AND FOOD OF ETERNAL LIFE”
AS WE GATHER Today we consider why we follow Jesus. In the Gospel, we see many people stop
following Jesus because His words offend them. When Jesus asks the disciples if
they want to stop following Him as well, Peter answers, “Lord, to whom shall we
go? You have the words of eternal life.” Not only does Jesus have the words of
eternal life, but He also gives us the food of eternal life—His body and blood. As
we gather for worship, we gather around God’s Word and God’s Meal—the Lord’s
Supper.
TEACHING CONCERNING HOLY COMMUNION The Lord’s Supper is celebrated at Grace in the confession and glad confidence
that, as He says, our Lord gives into our mouths not only bread and wine but His
very body and blood to eat and to drink for the forgiveness of sins and to strengthen
our union with Him and with one another. Our Lord invites to His table those who
trust His words, repent of all sin, and set aside any refusal to forgive and love as He
forgives and loves us, that they may show forth His death until he comes.
Because those who eat and drink our Lord’s body and blood unworthily do
so to their great harm and because Holy Communion is a confession of the faith
which is confessed at this altar, any who are not yet instructed, in doubt, or who
hold a confession differing from that of this congregation and The Lutheran
Church—Missouri Synod, and yet desire to receive the sacrament, are asked first to
speak with Pastor Pase or the Elder on duty.

service.]

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION P In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C Amen.
P Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our
sins unto God our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus
Christ to grant us forgiveness.
P Our help is in the name of the Lord,
C Who made heaven and earth.
P I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord,
C And You forgave the iniquity of my sin.
Silence for reflection on God's Word and for self-examination.
P O almighty God, merciful Father,
C I, a poor, miserable sinner, confess unto You all my sins and
iniquities with which I have ever offended You and justly deserved Your
temporal and eternal punishment. But I am heartily sorry for them and
sincerely repent of them, and I pray You of Your boundless mercy and
for the sake of the holy, innocent, bitter sufferings and death of Your
beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful to me, a poor,
sinful being.
P Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office, as a called and
ordained servant of the Word, announce the grace of God unto all of you, and
in the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all
your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C Amen.

SALUTATION AND PRAYER OF THE DAY
P Almighty God, whom to know is everlasting life, grant us to know Your Son,
Jesus, to be the way, the truth, and the life, that we may steadfastly follow His
steps in the way that leads to life eternal; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who
lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

OLD TESTAMENT READING PROVERBS 9:1-10 (God’s way of wisdom.) 1Wisdom has built her house; she has hewn her seven pillars. 2She has slaughtered
her beasts; she has mixed her wine; she has also set her table. 3She has sent out her
young women to call from the highest places in the town, 4“Whoever is simple, let
him turn in here!” To him who lacks sense she says, 5“Come, eat of my bread and
drink of the wine I have mixed. 6Leave your simple ways, and live, and walk in the
way of insight.” 7Whoever corrects a scoffer gets himself abuse, and he who
reproves a wicked man incurs injury. 8Do not reprove a scoffer, or he will hate you;
reprove a wise man, and he will love you. 9Give instruction to a wise man, and he
will be still wiser; teach a righteous man, and he will increase in learning. 10The fear
of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is
insight.
P This is the Word of the Lord.
C Thanks be to God!
PSALM PSALM 34:12-22; ANTIPHON: V. 11
P Come, O children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the LORD.
P What man is there who desires life
C and loves many days, that he may see good?
P Keep your tongue from evil
C and your lips from speaking deceit.
P Turn away from evil and do good;
C seek peace and pursue it.
P The eyes of the LORD are toward the righteous
C and his ears toward their cry.
P The face of the LORD is against those who do evil,
C to cut off the memory of them from the earth.
P When the righteous cry for help, the LORD hears
C and delivers them out of all their troubles.
P The LORD is near to the broken-hearted
C and saves the crushed in spirit.
P Many are the afflictions of the righteous,
C but the LORD delivers him out of them all.
P He keeps all his bones;
C not one of them is broken.
P Affliction will slay the wicked,
C and those who hate the righteous will be condemned.
P The LORD redeems the life of his servants;
C none of those who take refuge in him will be condemned.
A Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it
was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.
P Come, O children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the LORD.
EPISTLE EPHESIANS 5:6-21 (Walking in the way of wisdom and love) 6Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of
God comes upon the sons of disobedience. 7Therefore do not associate with them; 8for at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as
children of light 9(for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true), 10and try to discern what is pleasing to the Lord. 11Take no part in the unfruitful
works of darkness, but instead expose them. 12For it is shameful even to speak of
the things that they do in secret. 13But when anything is exposed by the light, it
becomes visible, 14for anything that becomes visible is light. Therefore it says,
“Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.” 15Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, 16making the best
use of the time, because the days are evil. 17Therefore do not be foolish, but
understand what the will of the Lord is. 18And do not get drunk with wine, for that
is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, 19addressing one another in psalms and
hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with all your
heart, 20giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of
our Lord Jesus Christ, 21submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.
P This is the Word of the Lord.
C Thanks be to God!

cross has been returned to its original position. The Gospel is read from the center

VERSE AND ALLELUIA
P Alleluia. Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.
Alleluia. John 6:68
HOLY GOSPEL JOHN 6:51-69
P The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the 6th chapter.
(Jesus is the living bread from heaven.) 51[Jesus said] I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats
of this bread, he will live forever. And the bread that I will give for the life of the
world is my flesh.” 52The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, “How
can this man give us his flesh to eat?” 53So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say
to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have
no life in you. 54Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life,
and I will raise him up on the last day. 55For my flesh is true food, and my blood is
true drink. 56Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I
in him. 57As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever
feeds on me, he also will live because of me. 58This is the bread that came down
from heaven, not as the fathers ate and died. Whoever feeds on this bread will live
forever.” 59Jesus said these things in the synagogue, as he taught at Capernaum. 60When many of his disciples heard it, they said, “This is a hard saying; who can
listen to it?” 61But Jesus, knowing in himself that his disciples were grumbling
about this, said to them, “Do you take offense at this? 62Then what if you were to
see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before? 63It is the Spirit who gives
life; the flesh is of no avail. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life. 64But there are some of you who do not believe.” (For Jesus knew from the
beginning who those were who did not believe, and who it was who would betray
him.) 65And he said, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless it
is granted him by the Father.” 66After this many of his disciples turned back and
no longer walked with him. 67So Jesus said to the Twelve, “Do you want to go
away as well?” 68Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You
have the words of eternal life, 69and we have believed, and have come to know,
that you are the Holy One of God.”
P This is the Gospel of the Lord.
NICENE CREED I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and
earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus
Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before
all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God,
begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom
all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came
down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin
Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under
Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He
rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and
sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with
glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have
no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and
the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the
prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I
acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the
resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

HYMN OF THE DAY LSB 696 “O God, My Faithful God”
5 Let me depart this life
Confiding in my Savior;
By grace receive my soul
That it may live forever;
And let my body have
A quiet resting place
Within a Christian grave;
And let it sleep in peace.
6 And on that final day
When all the dead are waking,
Stretch out Your mighty hand,
My deathly slumber breaking.
Then let me hear Your voice,
Redeem this earthly frame,
And bid me to rejoice
With those who love Your name.

WORDS OF OUR LORD Matthew 26:26-28; Mark 14:22-24; Luke 22:19-20; 1 Corinthians 11:23-25
P Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread,
and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said:
"Take, eat; this is My body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance
of Me."
In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given
thanks, He gave it to them, saying: "Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new
testament in My blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This
do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me."
