Illnesses
• Please do not send your child to school if they are vomiting or running a temperature above 98.6.
• If your child has a temperature, you should keep them at home until his/her temperature is normal for 24 hours WITHOUT MEDICATION.
• Pre-K children usually love school and never want to miss. However, please help us keep our children well. You are the parent and sometimes you have to be the bad guy.
Tune into channels 2,4,& 5 to check for school closures. We also post this information on radio stations Fantasy 101.5 and WMSR. Sign up for

PHASE IN
• The first two weeks of school will be phase in.• During the first two weeks your child will come to
school in small groups two days a week from 7:30-11:30.
• The third week your child will come to school Monday-Friday 7:30-1:00.
• Hopefully this will help your child’s transition into school easier.
Labor Day Deadline
We must have the items listed below by Labor Day. Your child will not be allowed to return to school until we have them.• Completed Registration Card• Health Card—up to date immunizations and a current
health exam• Birth Certificate• Social Security Card• Proof of Address• Income Verification• Custody/Adoption Papers/Power of Attorney
Mornings
• Students and parents will enter the school from the front door.
• Park your car in front of the sidewalk. Please do not park in the bus loading zone.
• Take your child to the cafeteria and sign them in.
PICK UP
• Students will leave at 1:00 when our regular schedule starts.
• Pick up your child at the preschool playground.• Please park along the grassy side of the drive or in front of
the sidewalk (morning parking).• If the weather keeps us from playing outside, we will have
recess in the room. Ring Mrs. Michelle’s doorbell and we will let you in.
• Pre-K will dismiss at 12:00 on early dismissal days.
TARDYS AND CHECK OUTS
• Tardy-If you are late, you should check your child in at the school’s office.
• Check-out-PK class is dismissed at 1:00. If you need to pick your child up early, you need to do this in the school’s office.
ATTENDANCE
• State law requires 1 teacher per 10 Pre-K students. If your child is not able to be at school on time and on a regular basis you should withdraw your child so another child can have the opportunity to attend Pre-K.
• Attendance is the key to a successful school year.• Attendance rate needs to be 90% for Pre-Kindergarten students Your
child should not miss more than two days per month.• Please call the classroom (393-3330) and let us know if your child will
not be at school. Leave a message if we are not in the classroom. Your child must have a note (doctor’s or parent) when he/she returns to school.
CORRESPONDENCE• Backpack should be brought by
child daily.• Daily folder should always be in
backpack.• Correspondence between parent and
teacher should always be in front pocket of the daily folder.
• If you send something to school that will not fit in his/her backpack, please put a note in your child’s folder.
• IMPORTANT: CHECK THE FOLDER EVERY DAY.
FRIDAY FOLDERS
• Remove the weeks work.• Discuss work with child.• Sign the sheet of paper.• Return the folder on Monday.
MONEY PROCEDURES
• All money should be sent in an envelope with the child’s name, teacher’s name, and purpose written on the outside.
• Lunch and breakfast money may be placed in the same envelope.
• All other monies should be placed in separate envelopes.
• Envelopes should be placed in the front pocket of the daily folder.
PRICES
• Breakfast: $1.25 / day, $6.25 / week (Reduced - .30 / day, $1.50 / week)
• Lunch: $2.25 / day, $11.25 / week Reduced - .40 / day, $2.00 / week)
• Visitors: $3.75 (Lunch)
Lunch Choices• Parents need to order his/her child’s lunch daily.• You will indicate on the Sign In sheet your choice.• Lunch Menus are sent home monthly and will be posted
in the cafeteria and Pre-K classroom.• Parents will use the following code:
• L=Lunch Box• H=Hot Plate• S=Salad• Sa=Sandwich
Your child will have the right to pick something different if s/he
chooses to do so. Preorders help the cafeteria plan for meal
preparation.
Lunches brought from Home
• Lunches brought from home will be served as is. We are not able to heat student lunches.
• No carbonated beverages are allowed in student lunches.
• Students are not allowed to bring fast food lunches into the cafeteria.
Eating at the Table
• Your child will be expected to sit at the table to eat meals at school.• Over the years, I have noticed many kids have trouble with this task. • If possible, please practice eating at the table as a family.• Some skills to practice:
– Using utensils– Using a napkin– Sitting on your bottom with legs under the table– Staying at the table until everyone is done– Trying new foods– Speaking with an inside voice– Basic table manners: chewing with mouth closed, not playing with food, burping quietly, cover mouth when
sneezing and coughing– Keeping all food on the plate– Conversational speech
BREAKFAST• Our day begins at 7:30 with breakfast in the cafeteria.• Please make sure your child uses the bathroom before you leave the house. It is very difficult for us
to make multiple bathroom runs and still maintain a 1 to 10 ratio.• Students will have a choice for breakfast each morning. Cereal and pop tarts will be offered daily.
An addition choice will be offered and listed on the menu sent home monthly.• Please help your child follow the breakfast routine if you choose to stay for breakfast.
– Children should feed themselves. – Help your child interact with his/her peers. – Model the Pledge of Allegiance and encourage your child to participate. – Assist your child in cleaning his/her spot. – Allow your child to put his/her tray up with the group .
• If your child comes in after 7:50, s/he will not be able to get a tray.• Please make sure your child is on time so s/he can enjoy breakfast with his/her peers.• Your child will be given a four digit lunch code. S/he will be responsible for entering that number
on a keypad each morning for breakfast. Numbers will be assigned shortly after school begins.
NO ICE CREAM
• The Pre-K students have 25 minutes to eat lunch.
• They seldom finish the food that is
on their tray.• Ice Cream will be something special
for their kindergarten year.
HEAD CHECK
• Talk with your child about not sharing combs, hats, etc., or hugging other students.
• Your child has to have a form from the school nurse before returning to school.
Recess
• Please send your child to school in appropriate clothing.
• We will play outside unless the temperature is below 45 degree. Coats, gloves, and hats will be worn if they are provided by the parent.
Supplies
PLEASE SEND THESE ITEMS TO SCHOOL:• Change of clothes
Do not send seasonal clothes. Pants with a stretchy waist and a T shirt are the best choices. Label each item and put them into a gallon sized zip-loc bag.
• BackpackThe backpack should be large enough to hold a folder and your child’s winter coat.
Start off on the right foot!• Boots, Flip flops, sandals, and Crocs are not
appropriate for our Pre-K day.• We have SMART class in the gym two days a
week. We need to do our part in keeping the new gym floor in good shape.
• Tennis shoes are the best type of shoe to ensure safety in running and climbing. Please send your child to school in tennis shoes to avoid accidents.
• Students wearing something other than tennis shoes may not be able to participate in all of our activities.
Field Trips • We plan to take field trips throughout the year.• You will be responsible for providing transportation for your child.• Your child may NOT ride with another child’s family.• If you can not attend the trip, your child will not have class that day.• If someone other than the guardian drives your child insurance
verification must be on file. The responsible party must have these limits of liability insurance: $100000, 300,000/50,000.
DRESS
• Pre-K is fun and MESSY!• Please send your child to school in play
clothes.• We will send home notices if we are having
a special day or activity that requires special dress.
• If you choose to send your child to school in a dress, please put shorts under it.
School Clothes• Please send your child to school in clothes
s/he can manage.• Please make sure clothes are not so tight
fitting that s/he can’t pull them up and down independently.
• Parents should practice buttoning, snapping, and zipping clothes at home.

Curriculum
• We will use the OWL Curriculum, Zoo Phonics to teach language arts.
• Each week we will have a different theme.• Family Activity Pages will be sent home on a regular
basis.• Color Me Healthy-Nutrition• Personal Safety-Parents must watch start-up video.
Olweus Bullying Prevention Program
• Hickerson is participating in a new anti bullying program.
• Each student will be given a Helping Hawks be Heros T-shirt.
• Everyone is expected to wear it every Wednesday.
• We will have our Open House and Olweus Kick Off on August 12 at
5:00.
Me Bag
• Each week one child will get to take the “me bag” home.
• The bag will be sent home on Fridays.• You should help your child fill the bag with
items that are special to him/her (pictures, hobbies, book, etc.).
• The bag should be returned to school on the following Monday.
Book Orders
• We will try to send book club order forms home monthly.
• If you choose to purchase books you need to send the order form and money back to school by the deadline.
• No cash accepted—Please make checks or money orders payable to the book club.
PARENT RULES
• Parents should refrain from using bad language at school and school activities.
• Parents should not use tobacco products at school and school activities.
• Parents should not use illegal drugs or alcoholic beverages at school and school activities.
PARENT MEETINGS
• Parent Meetings will be held on a regular basis.
• The topics will vary according to the needs of the class.
• Please try to attend.
Emergencies
• Please keep personal information accurate and updated throughout the year.
Registration Card
• Please make sure you fill out the white Registration Card COMPLETELY.
• The State Inspector looks at these cards and checks that ALL spaces are filled in. If the card wants information that does not apply to your child please write N/A in the space provided.
• We will give these back to you to complete if they are not completely filled out.
PHOTO IDENTIFICATION
• Please be prepared to show photo identification when you pick up your child.
• You only have to remember 2 faces; however, we have to be able to name and recognize at least 40 faces each year.
• Children will not be released to people authorized on the Registration Card unless they have a photo identification.
• State Guidelines prevent us from accepting permission by telephone.
