NATIVITY OF JOHN THE BAPTIST

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke 1:57-66, 80

When the time arrived for Elizabeth to have her child she gave birth to a son.

Her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown his great mercy

toward her, and they rejoiced with her. When they came on the eighth day to

circumcise the child, they were going to call him Zechariah after his father,

but his mother said in reply, "No. He will be called John." But they answered

her, "There is no one among your relatives who has this name." So they made

signs, asking his father what he wished him to be called. He asked for a tablet

and wrote, "John is his name," and all were amazed. Immediately his mouth

was opened, his tongue freed, and he spoke blessing God. Then fear came

upon all their neighbors, and all these matters were discussed throughout the

hill country of Judea. All who heard these things took them to heart, saying,

"What, then, will this child be?" For surely the hand of the Lord was with

him. The child grew and became strong in spirit, and he was in the desert

until the day of his manifestation to Israel.

The Gospel of the Lord.

Kyle Sladek on June 30. He will be appointed Parochial Vicar for Holy Cross and

St. Katharine Drexel Parishes, effective July 16. Let us prepare to give Fr. Don Everts and Fr. Kyle Sladek warm Holy Cross welcomes as

A Parochial Vicar is a priest assigned to assist the pastor in the pastoral ministry of a parish. Together, as co-workers, the Pastor (Fr. Don) and Parochial Vicar (Fr. Kyle) will carry out the functions of teaching, sanctifying and leading the people entrusted to their care. Let us pray for all priests.

A Day in the Life of Jesus A Retreat for Grandparents and their Grandchildren

Thursday, July 26 10:30 am - 4 pm

Do you wonder what life was like for Jesus in relation to his grandparents, Joachim and Anne? Spend a day at beautiful St. Norbert Abbey with your own grandchildren (grades 1-7 of the 2018-2019 academic year) and

learn about a day in the life of Jesus.

Cost: $10 per person (supplies, presentations, refreshments, lunch) Registration and non-refundable payment are required by July 23. For more information, and to register, go to www.norbertines.org or call (920) 337-4315.

Now is the time to plan your funeral

Come to begin the process of planning your funeral. Morbid? No. Smart? Yes. Join Deacon Bruce Corey in the narthex on Saturday,

July 14, from 9-10:30 am to begin the process of planning your funeral. You will receive materials to begin documenting your wishes regarding your funeral liturgy. Your choices. RSVP to 766-3773 by July 12.

Today we celebrate Fr. Tom Pomeroy

This is a big weekend for Fr. Tom Pomeroy, our pastor for the past 10 1/2 years. This weekend, Fr. Tom celebrates the 25th Jubilee of his ordination and sadly, at the same time, his farewell. Check out the Cross Currents newsletter, which will be mailed out in the next week or so. Fr. Tom has written a

heartfelt letter to all of us, his parishioners. A main takeaway is his use of the word “joy.” He speaks several times about the joy he has felt in serving as a priest. We don’t hear that word very often, so it is a breath of fresh air to hear him apply it to his life of serving God and His people.

With that in mind we, as Holy Cross Parish staff, take time today to wish Fr. Tom the very best as he continues his journey and his promises to God. We pray that he will take with him to Brillion all of the good memories that he has made here. We, too, have fond memories of Fr. Tom’s time here, two of them being 1) his gift of laughter and humor and, 2) the smells of his daily cooking permeating the parish office--many wonderful and, yes, sometimes strange, smells.

Thank you, Fr. Tom, for blessing us at Holy Cross for more than a decade. You truly are a man of God and a dedicated priest. Peace (as you always say) from all of us.

A weekly walk with Jesus

Featured: Peg Roberts (A Holy Cross disciple ‘on the way’)

I am a cradle Catholic. I have been a member of Holy Cross Church for 65 years. Even though I attended Holy Cross Grade School, my journey to Christ was very slow. I went to Mass when I could through the years. When I left home, I didn’t attend church or pay much attention to God. With the arrival of my first daughter, I joined a Lutheran church and attended their services. My daughter went to school there through 3rd grade. By that time, I had two daughters and needed some help from my family so we returned “home” to Kaukauna. That was 22 years ago. It still took me a while to embrace the Catholic faith. My children attended religion classes, and I even taught religion. I thought I was growing in my faith (I was, but very slowly). Seven years ago, I wanted to meet more people. I went on my first CRHP (Christ Renews His Parish) retreat. It was awesome and life-changing. After that, I had people I knew in church. My faith has continued to grow since then, through listening to Catholic radio, being a Eucharistic minister, singing in the choir, being an usher and going on pilgrimages. I can tell you that my faith is growing. I want and need to be in Church now and to pray. I feel most at peace when I am in Church. My journey to Jesus is far from over, and I “joyfully” anticipate what my faith will help me do next.
