2 Newsletter 6, Week 1, Term 2 29 April 2016

Please make Susan welcome when you come across her. Susan’s experience of broad community involvement focussed in similar communities to ours probably means we will have the opportunity to meet her in many and varied places. Welcome, Susan. We look forward to sharing our College with you and learning from your leadership.

Ron Bailey Chair of Council

On behalf of Trinity Anglican College

I am very excited to be writing my first newsletter piece at Trinity Anglican College. As you would be aware the College Council decided to appoint an interim Principal after the departure of Steven O’Connor. This gives them time to appoint the next Principal without feeling rushed, and it also means that senior staff aren’t moved from the positions they are very capably managing.

I had recently retired after 20 years in Anglican schools, 14 of them as a Principal in WA, when I was asked to consider this role, and it was an opportunity I couldn’t resist. I knew of Trinity Anglican College through my past membership of Anglican Schools Australia and was aware of its standing as an excellent regional school.

There is so much about TAC that reminds me of my last two schools – St Luke’s Anglican School in Bundaberg, Qld and Geraldton Grammar School in WA. They are all young schools with the successes and trials that brings – being on a constant building site comes to mind! Building culture and ethos is equally important but a bit harder to grasp. We all want to send out fine young human beings but what is the measure of that? For me, it is certainly more than a NAPLAN score or an HSC result.

And that is why I have spent the main part of my career in Anglican schools. Yes, I am a practising Anglican but it’s more than that. Thomas Sergiovanni says that a good school is a community of relationships, a community of place, a community of mind, a community of memory, a community of practice and a community of action. That is what an Anglican school is to me - a community encompassing all of these things under the umbrella of the two great commandments which ask us to love God above all else, and to love and treat each other as we wish to be treated ourselves.

NAPLAN 2016 – 10-12 May

In May 2016 the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) will be completed by all students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 in all government and non-government schools. NAPLAN has the support of all State and Territory Education Ministers and will assess the literacy and numeracy learning of students in all Australian schools.

The results of the tests will provide important information to schools about what each student can do, and will be used to support teaching and learning programs. Parents will receive a report indicating their child’s level of achievement. Each student’s level of achievement will be reported against the national minimum standard.

The tests will be conducted across Australia for all students from 10-12 May 2016.

Tuesday 10 May Wednesday 11 May Thursday 12 May Language conventions (Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation) Writing

Reading Numeracy

In the Numeracy tests, students do not require any measuring tools such as rulers or protractors. In Years 7 and 9 there will be two Numeracy tests: one where a calculator is allowed and one where calculators are not to be used. For the calculator test, the student should use the calculator that they currently use at school.

Friday 13 May – A ‘catch-up’ day is scheduled for students who missed a test or were absent on a test day.

Students may be considered for exemption from the tests if:

• they are newly arrived in Australia (less than one year before the test) and with a language background other than English, or

• they have significant intellectual disability and/or significant co-existing conditions that severely limit their capacity to participate in the tests.

All other students are expected to participate in the tests. Disability adjustments that reflect the student’s normal level of support in the classroom may be provided. Large

Students may be withdrawn from NAPLAN by their parent or carer. This is a matter for consideration by parents and carers in consultation with the Principal. If you wish to withdraw your child from the tests, you must sign a parent/carer consent form. Consent forms are available from the College.

Please make an appointment if you would like further information about your child’s participation in NAPLAN. For students in Years 3 or 5, contact Mr Steven Armstrong, Head of Junior School. For students in Years 7 or 9, please contact Ms Kym Armstrong, Director of Studies.

Year 12 Semester 1 Reports

Year 12 Semester 1 reports will be provided to Year 12 students prior to the end of Week 2 this term. These reports provide valuable information regarding students’ performances in the recent set of exams, their current rank in each course and comments from teachers regarding progress and targeted areas for improvement. They also, of course, celebrate and acknowledge effort and accomplishment.

These reports are an important part of the dialogue that occurs between the College and home as we support our students to strive in their achievements. If you have queries regarding the reports, please contact the College. Pastoral care tutors and heads of house, in addition to classroom teachers, are valuable points of contact in this regard.

Trinity Anglican College 2017 Service Immersion (Years 10 – 12 in 2017)

Last year over 2000 students travelled across Africa, Asia and South America with Camps International where they made a valuable contribution to a range of community, wildlife and environmental projects. The students who chose to participate in this immersion gained a great deal from doing so, enhancing their chances of going into further education or gaining future employment in what is currently a very competitive market. Students developed a whole host of skills from leadership, communication, problem solving and decision making to use of initiative, financial management, and team building. The development and experiences students gain from both the immersion and the journey to get there really is unlimited. We are pleased to announce that we are working with Camps International to give your son/daughter the same opportunity in 2017. This time we have chosen Cambodia as our destination. Camps International will be launching the immersion to students on the 11 May and you will be invited to attend a presentation shortly after to learn more about this exciting opportunity. This letter is to give you notice of the proposed immersion, more information will follow shortly. In the meantime, please save the below date which is when we plan to run the parent information evening:

Thursday 12 May 2016 at 7:00 pm in Room 2 of the Senior School Building

“I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples.” ― Mother Teresa

When witnessing different events and the involvement of many different people in so many roles it reminds me of the importance of community. We can never detach ourselves from this sense and when we celebrate or commiserate it is completed as part of a community. We are invariably members of many different communities that have helped to form our character. As part of living in community it is important to recognise differences and individuality and to accept these as part of the process of growth. Students learn the importance of acceptance at an early age and we need, as educators, to engender this through all our teaching. At times, living in community can cause strain even though we are all heading in the same direction. The focus should always return to the basic tenure for this community: the education of the young with all its various parameters. I encourage all to make ripples, to be active listeners and to accept and even rejoice in our differences.

K-2 Athletics Carnival: a wonderful day, some outstanding achievements and high levels of enjoyment. All students took part with gusto and their willingness to have a go without fear was uplifting and a message to all. Thanks to Mr Clarke and the House Captains for their care and organisation on the day.

ANZAC Day: it was great to be part of the community event on Monday as we all commemorated the service men and women, past and present. The number who were willing to be part of this important aspect of our lives together gives great hope to all.

Mothers’ Day: the work on the Mothers’ Day stall is now in the care of Letitia Harrington. This is an invaluable exercise and has been an integral part of our community. The students will be given the opportunity to purchase for their special people on Friday 6 May.

Public Speaking: Week 5 sees the first round of the Public Speaking. Students will take part in this in their classes and the second stage will take place in Week 6.

SHINE: On Friday in Week 6 (3/6) the students will be involved in a day where the focus is gaining knowledge and skills about our environment. An amazing day with lots of activities to ensure that students understand the importance of caring for and nurturing their environment.

A warm welcome back to Term 2.

ANZAC DAY MARCH

Special thanks must go to the many families who represented the College by participating in last Monday’s ANZAC Day march in Wodonga. Dressed in their winter uniform, the students marched proudly behind the Campus banner showing great respect to the fallen.

WINTER UNIFORM

Students should be wearing the College winter uniform this Term and in Term 3, however, some families may not have received their orders from the clothing shop as yet. Should this be the case, your son/daughter is permitted to wear their summer uniform.

As the weather turns colder, I encourage students to wear their College jumper and spray jacket. Please note that the students are not permitted to wear their spray jacket in class.

Also, a reminder that jewellery and nail polish are not permitted at school and that long hair should be tied back.

JUNIOR SCHOOL PRODUCTION - THE LION KING JR.

The College is very excited to be well underway with the 2016 Trinity Junior School production, The Lion King Jr. This is the first time Trinity has embarked on a professionally written and recorded show for their junior school

production and it will be the biggest yet involving all Trinity students from Years 3-6 across both Campuses.

We have been busy over the latter part of Term 1 auditioning for the main cast across both campuses. With approximately 140 students auditioning, we had an amazing amount of talent to choose from. Congratulations to all of those who were successful at being selected in the main cast. These students have been busily rehearsing mainly during lunch times with some after school and Sunday rehearsals. All students in Grades 3-6 will take part in the Lion King Jr. by forming our “Massed Choir Ensemble”. They will be learning all

of the music during music classes and will be on special custom-built staging for the duration of the show. It is set to be a great production!

NAPLAN Years 3 and 5

I take this opportunity to remind parents of children in Years 3 and 5 that the students will be participating in the NAPLAN Testing on 10, 11 and 12 May. The students in these particular classes will spend some time familiarising themselves with the testing regime prior to the testing early this Term.

ART & CRAFT CLUB

More fabulous art pieces from our Art & Craft Co-Curricula Club.

READER PURCHASES

The Campus has purchased a wonderful collection of PM Readers for our Infants classes. The readers play an important part in the literacy program, providing levelled readers for all students to read and experience reading success. The books have been accessioned and covered – thanks Sally - and will be a great addition to our classroom resources.

JUNIOR SCHOOL PUBLIC SPEAKING – Year 3 to 6

The Junior School Public Speaking Competition will be held over Weeks 5, 6, 7 and 8 of this Term. As part of this year’s speech giving competition students are given a topic (see below) and are asked to prepare a speech. Years 3-4 are asked to prepare a three (3) minute speech and Years 5-6 are asked to prepare a four (4) minute speech. The winners

The Years 5 and 6 section are also given a Short Preparation Speech (impromptu) on the night of the Finals. They are given a topic (chosen by Lions) and 10 minutes to prepare a one (1) minute response to this topic. Please note: this is NOT part of the school level competition.

Years 3-4 “My Secret Life as a Superhero”

You are a superhero – tell us about yourself. Do you have a superpower? What is it and how do you use it? How did you find out you were a superhero? Are the rest of the family superheroes? How do you keep it a secret?

Years 5-6 “A Day in my life as a…….” You are a doctor, teacher, nurse, vet, prime minister, brain surgeon, astronaut,

etc. Tell us about a day in your life. It may be an ordinary kind of day, or a day when something big happens.

Hint: While some of the details may be fiction, it must be based on the facts of a real occupation, etc.

PLEASE NOTE: These are speeches and as such, props, photos, models etc. are not to be used by the Years 3-4 or Years 5-6.

CAMPS, SPORTS & EXCURSION FUNDING

The Victorian Government provides funding for Camps, Sports and Excursions (CSEF) for students whose parent/guardian is in receipt of a Centrelink Health Care Card (HCC), a Pensioner Concession Card (PCC) or a Veterans Affairs Gold Card. Anyone who believes they are eligible can apply, either by downloading the CSEF Application Form from the website (www.education.vic.gov.au/csef or telephoning the College and requesting one be mailed to you. CSEF money is paid directly to the school and will be allocated by the College towards camps, sports and/or excursions for your child/children. Parents are encouraged to lodge their applications just a soon as possible, but up until 3 June 2016.

NUT & RAW EGG FREE COLLEGE ENVIRONMENT

Just a reminder that our College is a ‘Nut and Egg Aware’ School. We have a number of students who suffer from Anaphylaxis, particularly to nuts and raw eggs. Anaphylaxis is a

severe allergic reaction that occurs rapidly and causes a life-threatening response if not treated immediately. We ask parents to be very conscious when packing students lunch boxes, and to avoid all nuts and nut products and raw egg. The College appreciates your support in this matter.

SCHOOL BANKING

As you may be aware, Hume Bank offers a wonderful service to students at the school in the form of Student Banking. Bank books are collected every Friday, taken to Hume and processed, with the books being brought back that afternoon. I would encourage any student who wants to participate in the school banking service to contact the School Office and request an application form for Hume.

Book Club

Starting this term, the Albury Campus will be using the LOOP system for all credit card and online payments for Book Club orders. This should streamline the ordering process, as orders can be made and paid for via the Scholastic Book Club site without the need to return the paper order forms to the school.

Book Club orders can still be completed using the paper forms and paid for with cash or cheque, and all orders, whether done manually or via LOOP, will still need to be lodged by the return date.

Further information will be included with the next Book Club catalogues. Alternately, information regarding LOOP or Book Club can be found on the Scholastic Australia website or by contacting me via email [email protected]

In HSIE we have been learning about the past and present. As part of the unit we had an afternoon learning about a variety of games with our buddies from 4KS that were played in the past. Some were new to us and some were games that we still play today. We learnt how to play marbles, dominoes, quoits, card games, skipping and hop scotch. We had a fun afternoon and have started playing some of these games in the playground.

On Wednesday 23 March all Year 1 students enjoyed an excursion to the Jindera Pioneer Museum and the Corowa Motor Museum. The children were all very excited to catch the bus to the venues with their friends. The children worked in small groups with parent helpers and teachers to locate and identify items throughout the museums. The children
