Welcome to Münster Dear colleagues,

On the occasion of the EXPO 2000 in Hanover we would like to invite you to Münster to a series of highly promising scientific presentations on most challenging problems in neurosurgical rehabilitation.

Surprisingly, neurosurgeons were already involved in this field at the beginning of the last century, when Otfrid Foerster (1873 - 1941), the father of Neurosurgery in Germany, formulated his theories and practised both physical management and functional operative procedures in neurorehabilitation. Today, after a period of lessened interest, neurosurgeons are again more and more interested and actively involved in neurorehabilitation. They have recognised that neurorehabilitation must start already during acute treatment to improve disturbed neurological functions and in this way minimise permanent disability. Today, functional neurosurgery – especially neuromodulation - plays an important role in neurorehabilitation, whereas neurectomy continues to be indicated in only a few selected cases. It seems that neurosurgeons have ignored the Botulinum Toxine Type A (BTX A ) therapy, although it has a much wider context than initially approved. We will therefore organise special lectures and intensive workshops on indications for and practical application of BTX A. This is intended to enable neurosurgeons to make use of the safety and efficacy of BTX in the local therapy of muscle overactivity. Moreover, we will organise a special task force to initiate a comparative study on BTX A ( Dysport ®) in neurosurgical rehabilitation.

Neurorehabilitation means work in progress: Whereas the half-life of validated scientific knowledge is becoming increasingly shorter, the translation of this knowledge into action is speeding up. Invited speakers and experts from abroad - like those attending the first conference of the WFNS Committee on Neurorehabilitation - as well as free papers will illustrate the clinical aspects in detail. This is our intention. We both, the official delegates of the Committee on Neurosurgical Rehabilitation and our guests want to benefit from personal experiences and from discussions and raise questions of common interest, investigate the current state of knowledge and find therapeutic possibilities and solutions to unsolved problems. We will also consider the different local economic situations and facilities in order to develop strategies and concepts for neurorehabilitation around the world based on personal experiences.

During a one-day scientific excursion we will give you a personal insight into current concepts, strategies, and practical application of neurosurgical rehabilitation. We will visit three leader institutions in this field. Besides this trip will give you some insights into the culture and landscape of lower Saxonia and of Westphalia.

Last but not least: You should not miss a pre or post congress visit to the EXPO 2000 and attend ”Medicine Meets Millennium”, a World Congress on Medicine and Health in Hanover.
