What is "Otoso"?Otoso is a medicinal liquor drunk during the New Year holidays to drive away ill fortune and wish for longevity.Otoso is flavored with several herbs such as Chinese bellflower, mandarin peel, cinnamon and others.
Yukata, Tanzen and HaoriThe yukata is a cotton kimono wore while sleeping or relaxing. It can also be worn on short excursions outside the ryokan as well. Tanzen (padded kimono) or haori (kimono coat) are worn over the yukata.Wear wooden thongs (geta) or sandals when you go out in your yukata.
Japanese bath etiquetteWhen using Japanese bath, it is the custom to first rinse yourself before entering the pool.After getting nice and warm, return to the spigots and wash yourself, using the soap and shampoo.After rinsing, return to the pool for that final relaxing soak. It is custom not to wash again your body.
