Advent Reconciliation Service

Monday, December 12, 7 P.M.

There will be a number of

Priests present to administer the

Sacrament of Reconciliation.

Don’t miss this opportunity to

reconcile with Jesus.

THE RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION FOR ADULTS Do you, or someone you know, feel a calling to grow closer to God through His Church? Saint Gregory the Great welcomes new members and tries to provide appropriate spiritual formation according to each person’s needs. Some who come to us have had little or no affiliation with the Christian faith; others have been baptized and have been active members in other Christian traditions. RCIA is one way this community attempts to share the good news about Jesus Christ to the world around us.

Meetings are Tuesdays, 7 P.M., in the parish Hall.

For more information, please contact: Deacon Ron at [email protected], or 858 653-3582.

THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT DECEMBER 11, 2016

Rejoice in the Lord always! Again I say rejoice!

Phil 4:4

Stewardship Bulletin Reflection

IS 35: 1-6A, 10; PS 146: 6-10; JAS 5: 7-10; MT 11: 2-11 Today, the Third Sunday of Advent, we celebrate Gaudete Sunday. Gaudete means “rejoice.” Although Advent is a season of penitence and preparation, today is always set aside by the Church to relax and rejoice in the Lord. All of our readings today deal with Christian joy. This may seem not in keeping with the overall mood encouraged for Advent, but it is most definitely in keeping with what we need to feel, and it is definitely appropriate for those who embrace stewardship as a way of life. Stewardship is, of course, based upon an “attitude of gratitude” and today is a day to focus on the joy that results from that gratitude. Father Henri Nouwen was a well known Catholic priest, professor, writer, and theologian. In describing the significance of this particular day, Father Nouwen clarified the difference between joy and happiness. He said, “While happiness is dependent upon external conditions, joy is the experience of knowing that we are unconditionally loved by God and nothing — not sickness, failure, emotional distress, oppression, war, or even death — can take that love away. Joy can be present in the midst of sadness.” This “joy” that is reflected in lives of stewardship was also emphasized by Pope Francis, who said in his homily for Gaudete Sunday in 2014, “Today is a day of joy. Rather than fretting about all we have not done or accomplished to prepare for Christmas during Advent, we need to think of all the good things God, and life, has given us.”

THIS WEEKEND: Collection for the

Retirement Fund for Religious 2016

Aging religious need your help. Senior Catholic brothers,

sisters, and religious-order priests have offered their lives in service to others — educating the young, comforting the sick, seeking justice for the oppressed. Today, many are frail, elderly, and in need of assistance. Your gift to the Retirement Fund for Religious helps to furnish medications, nursing care, and other necessities. Please give generously. For your convenience envelopes are available in the pews.

On this third Sunday of Advent we continue to prepare our hearts in great anticipation of the birth of our Savior. Today is known as Gaudette Sunday. The term Gaudette refers to the first word of the Entrance Antiphon, "Rejoice". We light the rose candle on the Advent wreath as an expression of our joy. Our students continue to look outward, in a spirit of service and stewardship as they contribute to their Advent mission boxes. This program, from the Missionary Childhood Association, encourages our children to realize that they can make a difference in the world. This month we are also partnering with Becky’s Gift, a Toy Drive to support families battling cancer. Proud of Our Guardian Athletes! St. Gregory the Great Catholic School JV Flag Football Team emerged victorious by winning the San Diego Sports League Championship with a 9 and 0 record. This past week they were invited to participate in the San Diego County JV Parochial Football Championship. They played against teams from South Bay and North County, winning all three of their games. As County Champions the boys will proudly accept the perpetual trophy for a year. Their record for the season is 14 and 0. Mr. Grissom and Mr. Webster, coaches, are very proud of these student athletes and we thank these parents for their generous stewardship. Way to go, Guardians! We will celebrate morning liturgy with St. Gregory parishioners on Wednesday. Our one and only church practice/dress rehearsal will follow the liturgy. You are cordially invited to enjoy our Eighth Annual Christmas Program on Thursday, December 15, in the Church. The program begins at 7 P.M. We look forward to seeing you. St. Gregory the Great Catholic School begins Christmas Vacation on Friday, December 18. School will resume on Tuesday, January 3, 2017. Learn more about our parish school:

Visit the school website at http://www.stggcs.org/. 858 397-1290, or at [email protected].

We continue to enroll new students throughout the year.

A note from the Music Director

“Why Does the Music Change with Each Liturgical Season?”

Advent is my favorite liturgical season: a focus on hopeful waiting, the light coming into the darkness, Emmanuel - God with us. My hope as a music minister is that you will hear or have already heard these themes peeking through our music in this special season. But you may also have heard some other changes related to music in our Mass. While Advent is the tail end of our solar calendar, it is the very beginning of our Church calendar year. And with each change in liturgical season, we hear changes in our Mass Ordinary as well. Some very recognizable changes occur: No Gloria in Advent or Lent, no Alleluia during Lent. But we also change the Ordinarium parts of the Mass (or Mass settings) as well. You may recognize a darker, more somber sound in our Mass setting (Holy, Memorial Accla-mation (when we eat this bread), Great Amen, Lamb of God) during the season of Advent. When we all arrive to celebrate Christmas, we will suddenly hear a joyful, vi-brant Glory to God and a positive and uplifting Mass Set-ting for the rest of the Mass. This cycle will continue with each season change – a new season, a new Mass setting. So why do we do it? The music is a weekly reminder that we are entering a new holy time, a change in our perspec-tive, a focus on a new theme in our faith. Our goal in the music ministry is to enhance the liturgy and draw us all closer to God in common worship. Our hope is that as our liturgical seasons change, our Mass setting changes may draw you further into the spirit of each season. As we wait in hope for the light of the world to dispel all darkness at Christmas, I pray that you may know more fully and deeply Emmanuel, God with us. In His Peace, Katherine Cavallo [email protected] 858 653-3583

2016 ADOPT-A-FAMILY HOLIDAY

STEWARDSHIP PROGRAM It is time again for the Saint Gregory the Great Adopt-A-Family Stewardship Program. The program provides an opportunity for parishioners to share their blessings with those who are in need, through “adopting” (sponsoring) families who may not otherwise be able to provide during the holiday season. How does the program work? You will be asked to purchase and wrap modest gifts. The packages are to be dropped off at the Parish Hall, here at Saint Gregory the Great, before or after Mass on December 17th and 18th. Early drop-offs can be coordinated if your holiday schedule conflicts with these dates. Gifts will be delivered to our Sister Parish, Our Lady of Angels, on Monday December 19th. Gift cards for groceries are also a wonderful way to support these families, even if you are not able to participate in the wrapped gift program. On behalf of the Adopt-A-Family Stewardship Program, we thank you for your support! Contact: Deborah Sampson • 858 229-0345; [email protected]

Update on Deacon Ferris: Dear Parish Family, In the spirit of keeping in touch we recently called the family of our beloved retired Deacon Ferris Bell. Ferris celebrated his 90

th birthday on November 27

th. Deacon

Ferris, now living near his daughter and son-in-law in Pennsylvania, was the first deacon of St. Gregory the Great. Deacon Ferris and his wife, Glenna, are both part of the foundation of this Community. While Deacon Ferris was the first deacon for the parish, Glenna was the first Music Director. Both Deacon Ferris and Glenna loved this Community deeply. They are very much with us today when we gather as a community for worship. Our beautiful piano was a gift from them to the parish when we moved into our permanent parish home. Glenna went home to our creator on November 26, 2003, one day before Ferris’s 77

th birthday.

Deacon Ferris, while visiting his family for the holidays two years ago had a stroke, and decided to stay with his family in Pennsylvania. Fully recovered from the stroke and in good health, he does suffer from dementia and is now in a care facility near the family home. Deacon Ferris now enjoys visiting with the family and especially loves the family dogs. Please remember Deacon Ferris in your thoughts and prayers.
