So you don’t like Riesling because it’s sweet, eh? Jay will dispel that myth with “The Many Faces of Riesling.” Come explore the versatility of this noble grape and why some call it “the greatest white wine on earth.” You will be tasting several different styles of Riesling produced by 45 North Vineyard & Winery.

JAY BRIGGSJay Briggs is the Winemaker for 45 North Vineyard & Winery in Lake Leelanau. Prior to his arrival at 45 North, he studied Viticulture & Enology at Michigan State University under the guidance of Dr. G. Stanley Howell. After a summer internship at Black Star Farms in 2002, he returned to Northern Michigan as the Vineyard Manager for Shady Lane Cellars in 2004. His passion for growing grapes has led him into the pro-duction side of the industry where he is most comfort-able pushing the boundaries of the grape’s potential and the buttons of his co-workers.

Following the attack on Fort Sumter, Michigan women sent their men (eventually 90,000) off to save the Union and end slavery. Some women served as “angels of mercy,” nursing the sick and wounded sol-diers. Others challenged all social norms and joined the army, some even seeing action on the front lines. As one Michigan woman recorded, “I thank God that I was free and could go forward and [end the rebel-lion].” However, most Michigan women stayed home, managing the increased responsibilities of running the farm or business and raising their children. Sadly, their role is often overlooked, if not forgotten entirely. Fortunately, women recorded their experiences in letters and diaries, giving us some idea of the trials and tribulations they confronted in facing the greatest crisis in the nation’s history.

ROGER ROSENTRETERA native Michiganian, Roger Rosentreter teaches courses on American history at Michigan State Univer-sity. He served as editor of Michigan History magazine from 1988 to 2009. He has published extensively on Michigan history, including Michigan: A History of Explorers, Entrepreneurs and Everyday People (2014) and Grand Rapids in the Civil War (2018). Dr. Rosen-treter earned his MA and PhD degrees from Michigan State University’s Department of History.

Over the course of their careers, humanities majors earn on average about as much as majors in commu-nications, biology, and business. So why are fewer students than ever choosing to pursue humanities de-grees? And why does that fact matter? This seminar will address the state of the humanities today by ex-ploring their long history, beginning with the golden age of rhetoric in ancient Greece and moving on to the rise of modern, recognizable fields like “English” and “Classics” in the 19th century. Our main goal will be to understand why and how different ages and people valued humanistic pursuits.

With this history in mind, we will conclude by consid-ering and discussing the present state of the human-ities and possibilities for its future in our schools—and our everyday lives.

JEFFREY BLEVINSJeffrey received his PhD in English Literature from UC Berkeley in 2016. He currently teaches English at The Lawrenceville School in New Jersey, and he has lectured at Berkeley and Tsinghua University. He is currently editing a collection of essays on logic and literature for the journal Poetics Today. His writing has most recently appeared in English Literary History and Victorian Poetry.

It has been suggested, since Bernie Sanders brought up the idea during the 2016 presidential campaign, that America should be more like Sweden. So, should it? And, if you think so—what do you know about Sweden? Are there indeed lessons for America in the Swedish economic system?

In the first hour of this seminar, we will watch a new film from Free To Choose Media called Sweden: Lessons for America? (This film will be broadcast on public television stations in the fall of 2018.) The film’s producers, Jim Tusty and Maureen Tusty, will be with us to participate in the hour-long discussion and Q&A that follows. This is not a side-by-side presentation of the American and Swedish economic systems. Rather, it is a one-hour presentation of the key elements of the Swedish system (education, healthcare, unions, pensions, etc.). It will be then be up to you to decide: Does Sweden have lessons for America?

JIM AND MAUREEN TUSTYJim and Maureen Tusty have been making documen-tary films together for the past 15 years. In addition to four public television films and related teaching units for Free To Choose Media, they are producers of the award-winning documentary feature on Estonia, The Singing Revolution.

TOM SKINNER Tom is currently Senior Executive Producer for Free To Choose Media. Honors during his 50-year career incommercial and public broadcasting include four national Emmy Awards; three Peabody Awards; a Columbia, DuPont Award; and an Academy Award as the director of the documentary feature Journey Into Self.

For some fifteen years in the early twentieth century, before Hollywood became the film Mecca, Chicago boomed as a major center for the motion picture industry. This documentary, which I made for CBS in Chicago, tells that story using vintage footage, which includes such stars a Gloria Swanson, Wallace Beery, Ben Turpin, and Charlie Chaplin. The on-screen narrator is Gene Siskel of the famous Siskel and Ebert team. Discussion following the screening will deal with such things as acting and production styles, as well as social issues of the times reflected in the films.

SCOTT CRAIGScott is a retired television documentary producer. His programs have appeared on CBS, NBC, Turner, Fox, and others. He produced two series for the Home and Garden Network, The Good Life and Extreme Homes. His productions for PBS total more than 20 titles. His work has won more than 100 prestigious awards including a George Foster Peabody Award, a National Emmy, and 32 Emmys from the Chicago Chapter of the Television Academy, more Emmys than any other individual in the history of Chicago television. His programs were honored by the Chicago, New York, San Francisco, and Atlanta Film Festivals, as well as the Film Festival of Italy. Scott holds a BA from the College of Wooster and an MA and PhD from the University of Illinois. He is married to Carol Bawden, owner of the Painted Bird in Suttons Bay.

Albert “Bela” Janko was born in 1934 in Communist Hungary. His education as a medical student was in-terrupted in October 1956, when he helped lead the Hungarian Revolt. He escaped to freedom in America, completed his medical degree, and began his life anew. This is his story.

Over two morning sessions, Bela will share with us his awakening, as a ten year-old boy, to the evils of the Second World War and the horrors of human hatred. He will describe his call to medicine, his time as a stu-dent in Budapest, his unexpected role as an “enemy of the state,” and how he found himself playing a key role in the Union of Free Hungarian Students and the revolt against Soviet communism.

After arriving in America, Bela earned his M.D. in 1959 and became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1965. On his path to citizenship, Bela came to read and ap-preciate the Constitution for the freedoms it affords us all. Bela will conclude his story by sharing with us some of his advice for facing hatred and discord, engaging in open communication, and seeking out possible solutions to our current political climate.

ALBERT JANKO Albert “Bela” Janko holds an M.D. in gynecology and obstetrics from UCLA. For decades, Bela treated women for infertility at his practice in Monterey, Cali-fornia. He served as Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Gynecology & Obstetrics at Stanford University and has published widely on topics such as osteoporosis, estrogen therapy, and perimenopausal health. He has received numerous awards of recog-nition for his political activism from the likes of Pope John Paul II, Presidents Goenz and Solyom of Hunga-ry, and U.S. President George W. Bush He currently resides in Carmel, California with his wife Abigail, herself a longtime summer resident of Leland.

Every day, eight kids are unintentionally shot by a gun they found in the home. 85% of school shootings are conducted by guns the shooter found in their home or that of a friend. Access to an unsecured gun increases the likelihood of a teen completing suicide by nearly 200%, and 70% of gun violence that occurs in domestic disputes is from an unsecured gun that a woman bought to protect herself. Guns are central to American life, and people bring them into their homes for many reasons. End Family Fire is a bold new initiative aimed at ending the preventable tragedies. In this talk, I will discuss the initiative and highlight why it is important that gun owners are lead-ing the conversation.

KYLEANNE HUNTERKyleanne Hunter is the Vice President, Program for the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. In this role she directs Brady’s programmatic efforts to engage with lawmakers, law enforcement, the community, and survivors to achieve Brady’s mission of cutting gun violence in half by 2025. Beginning in Fall 2018, she will also serve as an Adjunct Professor at Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service. Prior to coming to Brady, Kyleanne was an instructor at the University of Denver and University of Colora-do, Denver in political science and comparative pol-itics. She also served as the Researcher in Residence for the Women PeaceMakers’ Program at the Joan B. Kroc School of Peace and Justice at University of San Diego. Kyleanne spent over a decade as a United States Marine Corps Officer, where she flew the AH-1W Super Cobra helicopter on multiple combat deployments and spent three years as the Marines’ Legislative Liaison Officer to the House of Represen-tatives. Kyleanne holds a PhD and an MA from the Jo-sef Korbel School of International Studies, University of Denver and a BS from Georgetown University. She lives in Northern Virginia with her husband and corgi.

This summer, Parallel 45 Theatre will bring four acclaimed artists from London and Los Angeles to Northern Michigan to develop an entirely new piece of theatre. In this Summinar, these artists will offer a behind-the-scenes look at their theatre development process and how it compares to other kinds of theat-rical creation, from the traditional new play process to the creation of performance art. They will explain how a piece of theatre makes its way to the stage, what key players are involved, why a piece of theatre succeeds or doesn’t, and how the process is changing with the growing interweaving of performance, visual art, multi-media, and literary industries.

KIT MCKAYKit McKay is proud to have spent the last eight years bringing professional artists from across the country and around the world to northern Michigan as the co-founder of Parallel 45 Theatre. At Parallel 45, she directed Our Town, Metamorphoses, A Christ-mas Carol in Prose, Shakespeare’s R&J, A Streetcar Named Desire, and others. Kit attended Interlochen Arts Academy, Sarah Lawrence College, and North-western University’s Master of Fine Arts directing pro-gram. Upon her master’s graduation, she studied at the Yale School of Drama master’s program in theatre management and worked as a Yale Fellow at Seattle Repertory Theatre.

ERIN ANDERSON WHITINGErin Anderson Whiting holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Sarah Lawrence College and a diploma from the Interlochen Arts Academy, where she ma-jored in Creative Writing and was named a Presiden-tial Scholar in the Arts. Erin co-founded Parallel 45 Theatre, where she currently directs philanthropy and manages general operations.

The North Manitou Light Keepers will tell you about their ongoing effort to restore the North ManitouShoal Light, also known as “The Crib.” The Crib is a historic and iconic lighthouse that stands in LakeMichigan near the Manitou Islands. It has served to protect lives and shipping in the Manitou Passagesince 1935. Since being automated in 1980, the struc-ture of the Crib has fallen into disrepair, in contrast with its beautiful surroundings. The North Manitou Light Keepers are now working to clean and restore the Crib, with plans to start giving tours and overnight stays at the lighthouse by July 4, 2021. The federal government deemed the Crib “excess property” and offered it for sale at auction in 2016. The North Manitou Light Keepers was formed to acquire the Crib, restore it, and make it available to the public for appreciation. This presentation will tell you about the Crib restoration efforts, as well as how North Manitou Light Keepers was formed, how it won the auction, what the group has planned for the North Manitou Shoal Light, and how you can be part of the action and team!

THE NORTH MANITOU LIGHT KEEPERSThe North Manitou Light Keepers is a non-profit orga-nization dedicated to the restoration andappreciation of the North Manitou Shoal Light. The organization was founded by Daniel and AnnaOginsky, David and Sherry McWilliam, Todd and Na-talie Buckley, and Jake and Suzanne Kaberle. Thesefour couples of dreamers and doers fell in love with the idea of bringing back to life a piece of Michiganmaritime history in the middle of some of the nation’s most gorgeous landscape. They look forward tosharing their story and mission with you!

Americans are remarkably accepting of inequality. Surveys regularly show that we are okay with dispar-ities in income—so long as rewards seem deserved and the road to success is wide and open to all. In short, Americans seem to believe that it’s opportunity, not outcomes, that matter.

However, recent developments in our economy, soci-ety, and political system call into question the historic “contract” that links opportunity and reward. There’s growing evidence that the historic “land of opportu-nity” doesn’t work for many Americans. The numer-ous disaffected voters for Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders, who see the system as “fixed” against them, speak to a growing popular perception that things somehow aren’t right.

In this class, I will review some of the evidence and analysis on the growing gap between the current “winners” and others, and I will discuss some propos-als to turn things around.

PHIL MIKESELLPhil taught political science for over 40 years at Wabash College, Indiana. Since his move to Leelanau County, he has regularly offered short courses on issues of contemporary interest in the Extended Edu-cation Program at Northwestern Michigan College.

Phil is also a trustee of the Village of Northport and an avid recreational bicyclist.

Inspired by a tour of England on tandem bicycle, ex-brewmaster Dan Young and horticulturalist Nikki Rothwell founded Tandem Ciders in 2010. Using ap-ples from Leelanau County and Old Mission Peninsula alone, the husband-wife team has garnered national attention for their award-winning ciders, which are pressed on a traditional rack and cloth press in small batches and fermented, blended, and bottled right on their farm in Suttons Bay. Dan and Nikki will tell us the story of Tandem’s found-ing, bound up in their story as a couple, and they will share their extensive knowledge of Northwest Michigan agriculture, the history and current state of cider production, and some differences between local (Michigan) and traditional (English) cider apple variet-ies. Participants are invited to an afternoon tasting at the cidery following the morning presentation.

NIKKI ROTHWELLDr. Nikki Rothwell works as the Extension Specialist with Michigan State University. She holds a B.S. from Western Michigan University in biology and chem-istry, an M.S. from Michigan State University, and a Ph.D. in entomology from the University of Massa-chusetts-Amherst. Currently, she conducts applied research and outreach programming with local cherry and apple farmers. Her research interests include tree fruit training and irrigation systems, pest management strategies, and horticultural modernization.

DAN YOUNGDan Young brings his experience as a food scientist and brewmaster to the craft of cidery. In 1997, he co-founded The People’s Pint in Greenfield, MA, where he developed many of the restaurant’s most popular recipes for homemade sodas, beer, and food using local ingredients. Dan and Nikki live in Suttons Bay with their daughter, Sadie B.

In this talk, David Lyon will address the underlying causes of present tensions between and within Euro-pean nations.

David will begin by summarizing the current political and economic stresses within Europe. He will then examine the historical events, cultural differences, and technical innovations that underlie the emer-gence of new populist and nativist movements, which are challenging the Western European concepts of democracy.

The seminar will end with a discussion on the issues raised—wherever the group may wish to take it!

DAVID LYONDavid Lyon spent 35 years working in a variety of manufacturing industries, with operations in the United States, Europe, and Asia. After early military service with UK Special Forces, he was, in retirement, the non-executive member of the UK Field Army Command Group for 10 years.

David is married to Lillis, a U.S. citizen. They are based in Amberley, England, and have a cottage on Lake Leelanau.

The United States Constitution was established in 1789. That same year, Congress enacted the Judiciary Act of 1789, which established the Office of the At-torney General and directed the President to appoint in each federal district “a meet person learned in the law to act as an attorney for the United States.” Ninety-four federal districts exist today with nine-ty-three United States Attorneys. Interesting enough, the Department of Justice was not created until 1870, nearly 100 years later.

This Summinar will examine that history and discuss the role of the DOJ and U.S. Attorneys. We will also review several current issues facing the Department and our justice system during these interesting times, for example: the Mueller investigation, the history of the Second Amendment, and whether a sitting president can be indicted. In our fast moving times, these issues might, and likely will, change by the time of the Summinar.

RICHARD ROSSMANRich is currently the executive director and a past president of the National Association of Former United States Attorneys (NAFUSA), a bipartisan and nonpartisan group of more than 300 former U.S. At-torneys from administrations as far back as President Kennedy. Rich served as the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan, as the chief assistant U.S. Attorney and as the chief deputy federal defender in Detroit. He was also Chief of Staff of the Criminal Division at Main Justice during the Clinton Admin-istration. He spent 23 years as a partner at Pepper Hamilton LLP, and he is a graduate of the Michigan Law School. Rich and Patty have owned a home in Leland for 20 years, and last summer they sold their downstate home and became Leland “permafud-gies.” Rich incorporated the Fishtown Preservation Society and was its first president during the original fundraising and acquisition of the property from the Carlsons.

In March of 2001, Jim Burnham created the web-site lelandreport.com for his father, Keith Burnham, to allow him to upload daily photos of Leland and Leelanau. This was originally a family project, but it quickly gathered a nationwide following, showing a photo a day for over 17 years. Over the last two years, almost 100,000 people from 100 countries have visited lelandreport.com with over 2,000,000 pages viewed. We will be talking about special photos and stories, not only from the last 18 years but going back to the 1960s when Keith first started photographing this area. We will also talk about plans for the future. Signed copies of our first book, The Leland Report, 15 Years in the Leelanau Peninsula, will be available at a special price. Come join us for a retrospective look at this magical area, which has been a favorite of our family since the 1940s.

KEITH BURNHAMKeith Burnham may have lived most of his life in Illinois, but his heart and mind have always been in Leland. He is a retired engineer and gifted artist. He was introduced to Leland by his wife Joanne Burnham in the early 60s and he has been taking pictures here ever since. Armed with a Nikon digital camera and an iPhone, Keith wanders the countryside with his pal Biscuit looking for the essence of Leelanau.

JIM BURNHAMJim Burnham was fortunate enough to spend all his summers in Leland growing up. He worked his way up the ladder in Leland, at the Lodge, Country Club, Happy Hour Tavern, The Cove, and Leland Yacht Club. He is the originator of The Leland Report, and for over 17 years has provided the palette on which Keith paints. Jim is a photographer, musician and in-ternet specialist from Tremont, IL, where he lives with his wife Erin and children, Daniel and Meredith.

Chris Andrews is a social educator and musician who uses storytelling to shed light on what exists beyond distraction. In an age of hyper-stimulation, Chris believes there is no skill more critical in our pursuit of truth and purpose than our ability to step out of the noise and into ourselves. While our devices are wonderful tools, he calls for mindful technology and digital consciousness.

Chris will be speaking about his journey, on foot and alone, across the United States—3,000 miles, eight months, and over 10,000 conversations along the way. The purpose of his journey was to highlight the value of face-to-face conversation in our digital age. He will discuss how he made his way across the coun-try and how certain interactions changed the way he understood others and himself, as well as takeaways about how to use our digital devices as tools for life instead of distractions from it.

After the journey, Chris has told his story by releasing an album of music, producing a short documentary, and writing a book. Today, his work continues to reveal that beneath our distraction lies a deep craving for connection to ourselves, our community, and the world we inhabit.

CHRIS ANDREWSChris Andrews was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1993 and spent most of his early years in South Amer-ica. After moving around until he was 15, Chriswent to high school in Lancaster, PA. He attended the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, where he studied Spanish and Management. In his third year of study, he founded the Let’s Talk project and finished his journey across the United States in the spring of 2017.
