PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Becci Conroy, RHIA, OHCC, CCS-P
Happy Fall MHIMA members!
Wow, this summer has absolutely flown by and your MHIMA board has been crazy busy getting things done and working on
our MHIMA Strategic Objectives listed below:
1. To provide MHIMA members with educational opportunities
2. To be active in state advocacy
3. To promote active AHIMA membership
4. To promote the HIM profession
5. To increase our vendor support
This past March, Traci Waugh and I attended the AHIMA Advocacy Summit in Washington D.C. and had the opportunity to
speak with Congressman Gianforte and staff members for both Senator Tester and Senator Daines. We asked that the
Congressman be supportive of changing the language in CFR 45 Part 2 regulation to match the HIPAA language in order to
modernize privacy laws to help combat the opioid epidemic. We also took the time to really introduce the HIM profession and
highlight what we have to offer.
In July, Traci and I attended the AHIMA Leadership Summit in Chicago and were able to participate in discussions about the
future of AHIMA. Our new CEO, Dr. Wylecia Wiggs Harris, Ph.D., initiated a very transparent and productive conversation
about the future of HIM professionals. These conversations will help guide the HIM profession into the future and set the
profession up for success in the future of healthcare.
Next month, Vicki Willcut, Traci Waugh and I will attend the National Convention in Miami to participate in the AHIMA House
of Delegates on behalf of Montana. A summary of the meeting will be provided once we return.
Just a reminder that next year is a voting year for MHIMA and I strongly encourage you to consider running for a role on the
MHIMA Board. Not only will you get the opportunity to represent your profession and advocate on behalf of HIM
professionals, but you will also make lifelong friends and professional contacts, as well as gain some amazing professional
experience. Please reach out to Mary Bisch or me if you have any interest.
I am sending you all well wishes through the upcoming holiday season and a very sincere thank you for allowing me the
amazing opportunity to serve MHIMA.

MHIMA FINANCIAL FACTS
Traci Waugh,
Did you know MHIMA is a 501(c)6 organization? MHIMA serves members of a profession, are exempt from
most federal income taxes, no portion of net earnings may inured to benefit any private shareholder or
individual, and allows lobbying. Some of us may be more familiar with 501(c)3 organizations which are also
non-profits. One of the significant differences between a 501(c)6 and a 501(c) 3 is lobbying activities. A
501(c)3 has restrictions on lobbying activities. Because AHIMA and MHIMA are a 501(c)6, we are allowed to
participate in Hill Day and speak as representatives of our organization to our legislators.
With regard to tax forms, a form 990N is required to be submitted annually by MHIMA as our gross receipts
annually are less than $50,000. Failure to file the 990 for three consecutive years would result in the
termination of our tax exempt status. Filing of our 990N is the responsibility of our treasurer.
Another required form is the 1099. A 1099 is required if a non-employee of MHIMA is paid $600 or more in a
year. This situation may arise with a speaker at our spring meeting. Of note, reimbursement for expenses
such as travel, meals, or hotels does not count toward the $600 payment.

LET’S NOT GO PHISHING…
At the 2018 CSA Leadership Symposium in Chicago, Darren Joslin, AHIMA Chief Service and Information Officer
gave a presentation on cyber security. He shared that the most common hacking technique is phishing. Phishing
is when hackers use social media, telephone, adware, and malicious links to capture your information.
Implementing strong security solutions for email and web access is a best method to avoid phishing hacks. And,
of course, education to staff is essential! Listed below are ten phishing preventions tips that Darren provided.

Kimberly Libsack lives in Billings, MT and works for SCL Health as a Data Integrity Specialist. She has recently
completed a Bachelor's Degree in Health Information Administration from Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri
and plans to sit for her RHIA in November. Kimberly was introduced to the idea of health information management
while working for her uncle who owned a vet clinic. Although he was an extremely competent veterinarian, his
record keeping skills were lacking. Having an aptitude for organization, Kimberly took on the task of creating a
hybrid record system for his clinic. Knowing she wanted to work in health care but not directly with
patients, Kimberly drew on the satisfaction that her experience at the vet clinic gave her and discovered the field of
HIM. She began her career in healthcare at St. Vincent in Billings in June of 2016 working Patient Access in the
Emergency Department. She participated on the Downtime Committee and was a Downtime Super User for Patient
Access. She then began working in the HIM department at St. Vincent in May of 2017 before starting her current
role in Data Integrity in March 2018. She loves the field of HIM for the endless opportunities to learn and grow as
the industry evolves.
Kimberly has two daughters, ages 6 and 11. They enjoy spending time outdoors and playing board games when it is
too cold. Her hobbies include playing tennis, snowshoeing, exercising, and reading.
Microfiche Reader Printer Needed!
St. Luke’s HIM department in Ronan is reaching out to anyone who has a microfiche reader printer that they are
willing to sell or give away.
Please contact Mary Ciez, RHIA, at 406-528-5216 if you have a reader printer available.
Thank you!
