Dear People of Holy Family, St. Mary and St. Anthony:
“Prepare the way of the Lord!”
(Luke 3:4)
Our scriptures today shift from a total focus on Christ’s return at the end of time
in Majesty, to also embrace his coming this Christmas in Mystery. For both his
coming in majesty and in mystery we must “prepare the way.” Pope Francis
has given us clear direction on how: Mercy. Last week we reviewed his three
steps to spreading Mercy and the first step is to warm our own hearts by
drawing close to the fire in the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
All of you who have read your first issue of the wonderful Catholic Life maga-
zine that is taking the place of the Catholic Times newspaper, saw the article on
the Holy Year of Mercy (pg. 28). A sidebar to the article lists the parishes Bishop Callahan has designated as
pilgrimage sites for this Holy Year. You will notice that in every deanery but ours he picked the parish
named: Sacred Heart. There is no Sacred Heart parish in the Thorp Deanery so Bishop Callahan chose
Holy Rosary parish in Owen instead. But the invitation Bishop Callahan extends on behalf of Pope Francis
remains crystal clear: draw close to the Sacred Heart of Jesus to warm your heart in the fire of his love and
mercy. We will be organizing visits to our pilgrimage church but all are welcome to go at any time and be
before the tabernacle, letting Christ draw your heart into his.
Another very powerful way to draw close to the love and mercy of Christ is the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
Where else do we have the chance to take off all of the defenses and expose our own heart…. to Christ’s?
We all want fallen away family members to return to the faith. We all want to see our parishes grow. Pope
Francis says it straight out: “How can we warm the hearts of others if our own hearts are cold?” And carry-
ing anger and resentment, guilt and shame, make them cold. Stone cold. Please come this afternoon to
St. Mary’s in Neillsville at 3:30pm, tonight at St. Mary’s in Greenwood at 7:00pm, or to one of the other
opportunities listed in this bulletin. I am also most willing to meet you whenever it works into your schedule.
Assisting people in the Sacrament of Reconciliation is one of the most important things a pastor does.
I could give many examples of Christ changing hearts in the Sacrament of Reconciliation but I am especially
edified by the sixteen St. Anthony youth, seven St. Mary youth and four Holy Family youth who will profess
their faith this coming Sunday that Bishop Callahan may seal it in the Sacrament of Confirmation. Second to
the gifts they received from their parents, the candidates sited the Reconciliation Service as the most touching
part of their Confirmation Retreat. Based on the scripture story of Jesus and the woman caught in adultery, a
container of sand was placed in the middle of the circle. One by one the candidates went to the sand and
traced in it a symbol of what they desired to be forgiven. Then they waited for someone, their Jesus, to come
and wipe away their mark. With this support from their peers they then came to a priest for confession and
absolution. It was a heart opening evening.
I will very proudly present them to Bishop Callahan at 1:00pm in St. Mary’s Church in Neillsville next Sun-
day and I thank all parents, grandparents, teachers and catechists who helped “prepare the way” for these
young people. To make next year’s Confirmation Program even stronger we are introducing a parent meeting
to explain the process and hopefully clear up some confusion we have been experiencing. The parent meet-
ing will be Wednesday January 27, 2016 at 6:15pm for St. Anthony’s and at 7:30pm for St. Mary’s and Holy
Family. A letter will be going out in December to alert parents as well.
Our seventh through tenth graders will be drawing closer to the holy fire this Saturday when they travel to
Our Lady of Peace in Marshfield to join youth from around the area for a meal, for Eucharist and for a
Christian Concert. Margaret Ouimette, Joyce Rondorf and I are most grateful for the parents who
re-arranged Saturday plans to make this experience possible for their youth.
It is all a part of extending God’s Mercy to a world in such need of it, all by first warming our own hearts in
the warmth of Christ’s. Let us Prepare the Way!
Fr. Steve
