How Prayer Can Help Your Quality of Sleep By Sarah Jones

Perhaps you have said your nightly prayers since you were small. Whether it be a prayer of gratefulness, concern for others, or a personal longing, saying a prayer before bed is a nightly practice that allows you to give God your worries before you rest. A major reason adults lose sleep is due to the amount of stress in their day to day life. Learning how to lean on God for help with your stress and your worries can help lift the stress out of your mind. Turning your troubles over to God or asking God for ways to deal with stress can significantly help your stress levels as well as improve your sleep.

The following are some practices you can use to prepare for bed so you will have a peaceful night

of quality rest. Nightly Routines Try to make sure that you have a consistent nightly routine. Get ready for bed, practice mindful meditation, say your prayers, and as you begin to wind down for the night, you will be training your mind and body to do the same. It will take some time and effort on your part, but if you can ask God for the focus and steadfastness to stick to your routine, you will be getting better, more consistent sleep in no time. You can make any of the following helpful practices a part of your nightly routine. Improving Your Sleep with Prayer Religious people tend to be more social, yet they also tend to worry. According to Huffington Post, people who have a strong religious upbringing have a religious identity which affects their behavior and the entire being of who the person is. These aspects of their lives serve them well when it comes to longevity. Overall, those who pray each day tend to live longer than those who do not. Chances are, they will sleep better as well. While you may already be praying for better sleep, some additional spiritual practices can also improve your sleep. While praying for better sleep, pray for help to find techniques to sleep better or for the motivation and strength to stick to a nightly routine. What are the Best Prayers to Use for Sleep? While we each have our own relationship with the Lord, there are several different prayers you can use to ask God for sleep. While there are different prayers, short or long, saying or thinking words you find meaningful to God will allow your heart and mind to empty of stress and worry and be filled with peace and calm. Find a prayer that means the most to you and your relationship with the Lord. You may choose to use the same one each night as a part of your ‘going to sleep’ routine, or you can choose to say a different prayer, depending on your personal needs or the day you have had.

Mindful Meditation Mindful meditation can allow you to relax and release your burden or worries over to God. Focusing on your closeness with God and turning all your fears, worries, or anxieties over to him before bed will enable you to fully relax and take your mind to a calmer place. When you are relaxed and calm, and your mind is not overreacting, you will be able to achieve sleep faster. Lectio Divina Another practice that promotes better sleep is the act of Lectio Divina, a Latin phrase meaning Divine Reading, which includes reading Scriptures and meditating on them, as well as praying to further promote your communion with God. Lectio Divina will also help to increase your knowledge and understanding of God’s word. Those who practice Lectio Divina do not see the religious texts as something only to be studied, but something to be lived. Bringing yourself closer to God each day can allow you to live a more calm and peaceful life. What Else Can I Do to Relieve Stress and Sleep Better? Besides mindful meditation and prayers, you can use other techniques to combat stress during the day. This way, when the time comes for sleep, you are not feeling as stressed out. Practice a Hobby Talk to God about finding a hobby or an activity you can enjoy each day. Take time to indulge in this activity regularly and be mindful to simply enjoy it. Whether you are taking time in nature, reading the bible, walking your dog, taking a class, or learning a new skill, make sure the time you have dedicated to your hobby is all about that: the hobby. Staying busy with an activity you enjoy will help you to take your mind off stressful things as well as make you feel more tired at the end of the day. Get Plenty of Exercise Make sure you are getting plenty of exercise. Taking care of your health and working up a sweat through exercise can improve your mood and decrease your stress levels, as well as expend energy and make you more able to sleep. The Final Word No matter which avenue you choose to decrease your stress and improve your sleep, always remember that God is by your side and there to give you the help you need. Call upon the Lord, and He will be there to guide you.

Did you know that SMASH has a leadership team? It's called "MASH" standing for Mentors at Sacred Heart. The MASH team helps to plan events, lead Wednesday night faith sharing, and learns about leadership throughout the year. This is a great team to join- not only to learn about being a leader, but to learn how to be a Christian leader. Pick up an application in the gathering space or contact Sarah for an electronic version. Mark your calendar- the Back to SMASH BASH is September 18th! More details to come!

WHY ARE WE CATHOLIC? BY DEBBIE CHALIK

Not long ago, I went to Mass and I was in a very bad mood. I know that might surprise some of you, but if you doubt me, just ask my husband. I can be grouchy!

When I knelt to pray before Mass, I looked around the church and I felt much better. I knew that this is something I really needed to improve my attitude. I remembered what I heard a priest say not long ago. His homily told of how the Eucharist is food for our journey. We come to Mass and when we leave, we carry a little bit of strength with us to make it through whatever we face during the week.

I not only believe it, I feel it. The key is that you need to pay close attention to realize the change you feel after receiving Jesus at Mass.

This is what sets the Catholic Church apart from all others! I grew up attending the Methodist Church, and I have fond memories of Christmas Eve candlelight services, potlucks, beautiful music and friends I still have today. After living, growing and learning as a Catholic, I recognize the great gift I now have. I feel so blessed when I celebrate Mass at Sacred Heart, when I go forward to receive Eucharist, and especially when I feel the Grace.

I challenge you to pay attention next week! Maybe you will feel the arms of Mercy wrap around you when you give thanks after receiving the Body of our Lord. Maybe you will be able to give back some of that Grace to people you know. That’s the stuff that will change a bad attitude!

Have a great week!

WE HAVE A NEW BISHOP!

Pope Francis named Father William M. Joensen PhD as the 10th bishop for the Diocese of Des Moines. Bishop-elect Joensen, age 59, grew up in Ames, the oldest of five children. He attended Iowa State, earned a bachelor’s degree in zoology and was in medical school when he discerned a calling to the priesthood. He was ordained in 1989 and served in parish ministry for six years before beginning

graduate studies in philosophy. Since returning to the Archdiocese of Dubuque, he has served at Loras College in Dubuque as a professor of philosophy and assisted at parishes in and around Dubuque. His ordination as a bishop and installation in the Diocese of Des Moines will be Friday, September 27! Watch dmdiocese.org for details. Sacred Heart welcomes Bishop-elect Joensen to the Diocese!

GRATEFUL HEART ~ GIVING HEART

A CALL TO DISCIPLESHIP (cont.)

DISCIPLES ARE A PEOPLE OF GRATITUDE - The faith we carry within our hearts leads us to be people who express gratitude for the many graces and blessings we have

received from our loving and merciful God. The meaning of the word Eucharist, the summit of our faith is thanksgiving. In gratitude we move in the world bringing joy, peace and love as we share our gifts of treasure.

“When you give to him give freely and not with ill will; for the Lord, your God, will bless you for this in all your works and undertakings.” - Deuteronomy 15:10

DIVINE RENOVATION UPDATE

As part of our Divine Renovation Prayer we pray, “Make us a welcoming community of Love…”

We have been working hard to make sure that everyone feels like they "belong" here. That Sacred Heart feels like home. That when you are here, you feel like you are visiting family and that when

you are away, you are missed.

Here are some action items that you may have noticed: The bulletin has an increase of faces and names. We celebrate our baptisms and include photos in the bulletin. You have met over 30 people in our new Active Apostle Shout Out section of the bulletin. We celebrate with our parishioners with anniversary's, marriages and milestones. We include these photos on social media when we get the chance. We have a New Parishioner bulletin board in the gathering space where we post photos of our newest parishioners. All of this makes a large parish feel small. Our latest addition to the bulletin is the "Please Pray For..." article beginning next week. When you can't make it to us, we want to be with you in prayer. As a community, we will pray for you! Our new Welcome Center in the Gathering Space has been redesigned to be more "homey" and is updated to include all the latest information for you! We also make it easy for new parishioners to find the information packet as well as drop off the paperwork right there in the gathering space mail box. We are working on adding an electronic monitor to that area in the near future for even easier information gathering. We are also working on improving our outdoor signage so people know where all of our various entrances are. We hear you introducing yourself by name before Mass and there is a buzz of activity after Mass as people linger in the sanctuary or head into the Parish Center for donuts. We hope that you can feel the differences as we continue to incorporate improvements for our Divine Renovation.

Imagine if...someone at Sacred Heart missed you if were gone for

a week.

Por favor use la puerta del norte, que es la puerta que mira a la escuela, por cuestiones de seguridad las demás puertas de la Iglesia estarán cerradas.
