VALIDATION PUBERTY BOOKS Kathleen Trocin
CBBA/ Bolivia. 600 VYA in 4th, 5th, and 6th gradesEvaluate acceptability and impact of the puberty and gender workbooks: • Understand impact on knowledge and attitudes • Assess acceptability and relevance of content and design.• Assess parents’, teachers’ and school administrators’ acceptability.
Methods1. A survey of VYA. 2. In-depth interviews with VYA. 3. FGDs with teachers, schools directors, and mothers.
Key results Girls’ and boys’ workbooks generally well received by VYAs, their mothers, and school staff. Sections on menstruation particularly well received.
Majority of mothers and school staff felt workbooks were age appropriate. Girls and boys were confused by some content.
Were generally effective in improving very young adolescents’ puberty knowledge and some of their puberty attitudes.
Achievements to date
More than 10,000 girls, and their peers (boys), in 100 schools received support and empowering information about menstruation, MHM, and puberty.
Over 10,000 families and 500 teachers strengthened their knowledge and skills to address menstruation and MHM at homes and schools.
More than 300 authorities, and technicians are aware of the challenges menstruating girls face, and are sensitized about the importance of WinS to girls rights exercise. Technical and sectoral authorities are considering and understanding MHM.
The schools (demonstrative experience), made small but significant improvements to their bathrooms (safety latches, garbage dumps, hygiene supplies).
Concrete commitments from Education Sector at the departmental level (DDE), e.g. including MHM in its community activities and regional education meetings; issuing instructions to include MHM in regionalized classroom plans.
Other regions of the country are interested in reproducing items of the basic package, with their own budget.
UAB our local academic ally, included MHM into their study plans (Nursing, Pedagogy, and Education Sciences) establishing specific and gender-sensitive capacities at the local level.
NEXT STEPS
• A systematization to respond to departmental and municipal governments. A friendly guide, to help scaling up process, and for other organizations and academic entities calling for technical assistance.
• Should include friendly costing, & monitoring instruments, with feasible national indicators.
• Recommendable to include advice coming from local allies and counterparts for implementation.
• Better to design it for main audience: official decision makers • Continue dissemination, advocacy and technical assistance.• Sustain actions to influence national tools (MoE); regionalized curricula and
annual plans.• Continue to open visible and practical niches for MHM in Bolivia, at the national
level.
Thanks
