Year 9 is an important and vital ‘bridge’ between Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4; it secures and consolidates the learning in Years 7 and 8 and serves to build on and prepare pupils for GCSE examinations and the world beyond.

Students will begin to experience more sophisticated texts and tasks that mirror the level of challenge that they will eventually face in their examinations at the end of Year 11.

This is an opportunity for you to learn about the Year 9 English courses, how they will be assessed and how you might be able to help and support your child as they work alongside teachers to prepare for “new style” GCSEs.

Why are we here?…

Page 27: Welcome to - Thorp Academy · Welcome to … The Year 9 Key ... chapter to If nobody speaks of remarkable things. Spring 1 Exploring writers viewpoints ... To Kill a Mockingbird Spring

Students in Year 9 are studying both English Language and English Literature as two separate courses; they are taught and assessed by two separate teachers.

They will study a range of units linked tightly to the new and current AQA English Language and English Literature qualifications which are being delivered in Years 10 and 11.

Therefore our Year 9 course provides a platform for the study of:

AQA GCSE English Language 8700

AQA GCSE English Literature 8702

A Guide to Year 9…

Page 28: Welcome to - Thorp Academy · Welcome to … The Year 9 Key ... chapter to If nobody speaks of remarkable things. Spring 1 Exploring writers viewpoints ... To Kill a Mockingbird Spring

Both of these courses result in 100% terminal examination assessment at the end of Year 11 – in the case of our current Year 9 - summer 2019. Both of these qualifications will be of equal worth in the Progress 8 measure used as an expectation of student attainment.

There is no longer a coursework element to either course and each course is tested by two examination papers. Therefore your child can expect to sit four examinations within the English department at the end of Year 11; two in English Language and two in English Literature.

None of the work produced by your child in Year 9 will be submitted to the exam board; the assessments are internally assessed and their function is preparation for further study in Years 10 and 11.

A Guide to Year 9…

Page 29: Welcome to - Thorp Academy · Welcome to … The Year 9 Key ... chapter to If nobody speaks of remarkable things. Spring 1 Exploring writers viewpoints ... To Kill a Mockingbird Spring

Year 9 work will, however, be assessed using the GCSE mark schemes and related criteria in order to establish our high expectations of students working at GCSE level in school, and to help students become increasingly familiar with the skills required to be successful readers and writers at KS4.

Both English Language and English Literature work to complement each other and feed into a very rich, varied and balanced curriculum for Year 9 students.

A Guide to Year 9…

Students have 6 lessons over a fortnight and will study 6 units which are a mixture of Reading and Writing.

Students will also undertake an individual Speaking and Listening presentation during the year, covering the skills of presenting and discussing.

For the purpose of assessment, students will complete a range of sharply focused tasks and, in the summer term, they will undertake a mock examination ‘in the style of’ the new Language examinations.

Students will have started a unit of work titled ‘Writing to Describe’ where they are asked to write a descriptive piece based on an image.

As stimulus, they will read a range of descriptive pieces and use images in a bid to inspire their own creative and descriptive response.

They will use a range of literary devices and structures, as well as make use of a range of sentence types, punctuation and vocabulary.

Students will have started a unit of work around the novel where they are asked to respond to the text, exploring how the writer creates a mysterious atmosphere.

They will write an analytical response using PEE paragraphs.

They will look at the writer’s methods, select quotations from the text to support their ideas and explain the effects of the language on the reader.

Supporting students to meet high expectations - The Basics

Ensure that your child attends lessons; all English lessons in Year 9 are focused on Reading and Writing and are direct preparation for GCSE.

Ensure that your child is fully prepared for their lesson. Have they brought all of the equipment that they need? Have they completed their homework? You can check this by looking at your child’s planner when you sign it each week.

It is perfectly acceptable to support your child with their homework; it will help you to understand what they are studying at school and your child will benefit from any support you are able to offer.

Ensure that your child arrives on time for school and lessons so they aren’t disadvantaged by missing vital preparation time.

How can you help?

Page 37: Welcome to - Thorp Academy · Welcome to … The Year 9 Key ... chapter to If nobody speaks of remarkable things. Spring 1 Exploring writers viewpoints ... To Kill a Mockingbird Spring

Supporting students ‘as readers…’

Encourage your child to read every day for 20 minutes; choose from a range of fiction and non-fiction texts. Our LRC has a lot to offer.

“Students will be required to respond to unseen texts drawn from “high quality, challenging literature and non fiction” on both papers in the final examination, so it is vital that students find opportunities to read widely and become confident in interpreting ideas” (AQA)

Your child can visit our LRC before, during and after school. Our LRC manager is excellent and only too willing to offer help and advice.

Every student has a mobile phone – it has NEVER been easier to access good quality texts electronically or online. Spoken Language texts that can be listened to are also excellent!

How can you help?

Page 38: Welcome to - Thorp Academy · Welcome to … The Year 9 Key ... chapter to If nobody speaks of remarkable things. Spring 1 Exploring writers viewpoints ... To Kill a Mockingbird Spring

Supporting students as ‘writers…’

Ask your child to describe something in the room in detail - make sure they appeal to all the senses: sight, sound, taste, smell and touch.

Talk to your child about memorable experiences, such as holidays and trips they might write about.

Keep revising punctuation, spelling and planning – drafting and checking are vital.

Ask your child to persuade you to give them something they really want; ask them to recall and explain various persuasive devices.

Discuss with them all of the different techniques they have used afterwards.

How can you help?

Page 39: Welcome to - Thorp Academy · Welcome to … The Year 9 Key ... chapter to If nobody speaks of remarkable things. Spring 1 Exploring writers viewpoints ... To Kill a Mockingbird Spring

Supporting students as readers in English Literature:

Establish what texts are being studied by your child. Read texts alongside your child and help them to re-read texts.

Learn key technical terms and how to spell them correctly.

Write practice PEE paragraphs to include evidence and explanations of the effects the writers achieve.

Talk together about how stories are “built,” i.e. how do writers begin texts? Examine a range of opening lines across a range of texts

Expose students to as many multi media learning experiences as possible to help them access “challenging texts”: film / YouTube / radio / theatre /online study guides

How can you help?

Page 40: Welcome to - Thorp Academy · Welcome to … The Year 9 Key ... chapter to If nobody speaks of remarkable things. Spring 1 Exploring writers viewpoints ... To Kill a Mockingbird Spring

Supporting themselves in the development of their own reading and writing habits:

Reading newspapers and summarising articles

Collecting a range of texts - electronically

Learning spellings

Writing practice paragraphs to include a range of sentences, punctuation

and vocabulary

Revising different writing forms such as letters, articles, scripts and

speeches

Literature students should read widely across a range of genres.

What should your child be doing at home?
