WELCOME TOTY CANOLYOUR HOME FROM HOME - A PERFECT HOLIDAY RETREAT

Page 2: Welcome to Ty Canol

Ty Canol is first and foremost a family holiday home. We purchased the cottage a few years back and have gradually renovated it to provide a relaxing place to get away from it all.

When you arrive, you’ll immediately see that we have created a family home and I’d ask that you re-spect this. We have chosen to keep on display photographs and mementos that mean something to us, so to create a homely feel for you to enjoy your holiday in the cottage.

We think that we have provided everything that the average family needs to enjoy a holiday and in-deed, over the years we have enjoyed many happy weeks in the cottage, exploring the surrounding peninsula and local hostelries.

A FAMILY RETREAT

Page 3: Welcome to Ty Canol

This brochure aims to provide you with sufficient background so that you can best prepare for your holiday, so that you know more about what you are getting and so that you know your way around the cottage and also the surrounding area.

If during your stay there are any emergencies, then please contact me on 07885 957274.

For all other enquiries, I can be contacted via email - [email protected]

The cottage is over 150 years old and we have retained most of the original features. Whilst we have upgraded the electrics and plumbing, please do remember this....

You will experience creaks and the occasional spider, the walls upstairs are made of wood so don’t expect to be able to have a private conver-sation!

The water flow is sometime slightly intermittant, especially in the shower - however persevere and you’ll always be able to finish off!

You’re in the country surrounded by farms so expect to see farm ani-mals and country creatures around the property. The land immediately in front of the cottage beyond the boundary fence is a working farm so don’t be surprised to see a big ‘heifer’ up close.

All in all, we love Ty Canol for all its quirkiness. It is the perfect place to leave all your troubles behind and just reconnect with ‘life’ again.

We’d be really grateful if you would look after the ‘old dear’ whilst you are staying at Ty Canol and respect our decision to leave our family mo-mentos on display.

W know you’ll fall in love with the place - everybody that has ever been always does.

Happy holidays...

The Lockwood Family

“Ty Canol is such a fantastic place to be. We love it here. Thanks Tony, Nina and Niamh for sharing your wonderful home with us”Kathryn Jackson

Page 4: Welcome to Ty Canol

Ty Canol is located on the edge of Rhiw, a small village perched on a hill, halfway between Abersoch and Aberdaron.

The Post-code is LL53 8AU, and the best way to approach the cottage is to travel through Pwllheli and take the A499 towards Abersoch. After approximately 2/3 miles, you’ll see a petrol station on your left, on the edge of Llanbedrog. You need to take the next right (B4413), up into Llanbedrog vil-lage centre, the road is signposted to Aberdaron. Continue through Llanbedrog and on through the next village Mynytho. After leaving Mynytho, the next two left junctions are signposted Abersoch.

Immediately after the second junction, you need to take the next left - signposted Rhiw.

Continue along this road for 3/4 miles until you come to Rhiw Hill - You’ll know when you’re there as you will need 1st/ 2nd gear in the car! Plas yn Rhiw is on the right at the bottom of the hill.

HOW TO FIND US

3

Page 5: Welcome to Ty Canol

At the top of the hill, take a look to your left - you’ll see an amazing view of Hells Mouth.

As you enter the village of Rhiw, you need to turn right at the cross roads, just after the church, which is on your left.

Following this road, you’ll fork left and then start to go down-hill. You’ll pass an old chapel on your left and immediately after this, the road turns to the right. On this bend, there is a track on your left and Ty Canol is to be found at the bottom of the track.

You enter the property through the first set of wooden gates and you’ll find sufficient space to park a number of cars on the gravel.

The keys for the cottage are held by our neighbours - Belinda Hughes at Tyddyn Merion, which you can find by taking the Public Footpath on the left hand side at the foot of the track. Go through the iron gate and walk along the path to the next farm yard.

If you are planning to arrive late, please call me on 07885 957274 so that I can arrange for an alternative way to get the keys to you.

The cottage will be available to you after 4pm on your selected day of arrival.

“I just love the seclusion of the cottage. It’s so peaceful. The night sky and stars need to be seen to be believed”Jacky Subert

We have created this section to try to tell you where you can find everything in the cottage. It’s not that big so you should be able to find everything anyway but to save you time, we have highlighted the key things here;

3

WHERE IS EVERYTHING?

5

Page 7: Welcome to Ty Canol

Everything in it’s place and a place for everything. Well that’s the plan anyway - you tell us whether we’ve achieved the dream!

The Kitchen - You’ll find everything within arms length, except the Freezer, which is located in the ‘Messy Room’.

As we use the cottage ourselves, you’ll find spices and oils within the cupboards - we are happy for you to use these although we do ask that you replace pots that are empty - effectively an honesty bar is in operation.

By the way, the portrait on the wall is Sian Hughes, who lived in the cottage in the 1800’s

6

Torch (wind up) and fire extinguisher

Spices - we are adopting an honesty policy here and request that you replace the pots when they are empty

Pots & pans, Toaster

Kitchen cleaning materials

Cutlery

Crockery - Plates, Bowls, Dishes

Glasses

Cups/ Glasses

Fridge

Utensils - top drawer

Dish-cloths/ Bin Bags etc

Please note that the freezer is located in the ‘messy’ room

Page 8: Welcome to Ty Canol

The Lounge - the lounge, dining area and kitchen are all one open area.

There are many books - novels as well as books on the area, including a couple that highlight some really great walks on the peninsula - please help yourself and in the case of novels, feel free to exchange.

Our Sky package provides you with access to ‘On Demand’ so you’ll never be far away from a film or programme that you like.

The Broadband is available via a Wireless Connection - the BT Broadband Box is located in the corner of the dining room near the phone - the security code of the wireless can be found on the rear of the BT Box.

As the cottage suffers from intermittent mobile signals, we have provided a landline. We would ask that you do not take liberties in the use of the phone.

7

Through to the ‘Messy Room*’ where you will find the Freezer and Dryer, as well as the BBQ, External Table & Chairs, Steamer chairs and outdoor games.

TV/ DVD player/ Sky

Indoor board games

Bathroom, where the washer is also plumbed in

DVDs

Bedding

Beach Towels

Under the stairs, you’ll find a useful storage cupboard. This is also where we keep the brushes/ mops/ vacuum cleaner, should you feel that you’re missing domestic duties!

The ground floor also has advantage of three large storage heaters that are set according to the time of year. These do project a strong heat source and do get hot so we ask that you are careful, especially young children.

If you need to get the wood-burner fired up, you’ll find logs in the wood-store at the side of the house, as well as coal in the ‘messy room’. Fire lighters can be found along with matches on the shelf to the right of the wood burner.

Should the electricity ‘trip’ for whatever reason during your stay, the control unit and fuse box is located in the wooden units above the main front door.

Page 9: Welcome to Ty Canol

The BathroomThe bathroom is located just off the lounge.

Also located in the bathroom is the Washer.

In the corner of the bathroom is a storage area, where the hot water tank is located.

Within this cupboard, you’ll find the controls for the emersion heater which can be set to provide extra hot water - in reality, you shouldn’t need it but its there just in case.

The ‘Messy Room’

By the way, it’s not that Messy!

This is the room where we keep all of the outdoor things, as well as the freezer and dryer. Please be careful when entering - to door is low, there is a step and if you get it wrong, you’ll end up with a bump on the head - I know!

There is also various equipment stored in the Messy Room and we ask that you don’t allow children in the room unattended - we do have plans to turn the space into maybe a play room but it’s certainly not that now!

You’ll find the BBQ, wind breaks, outdoor table and chairs, steamer chairs as well as a range of outdoor games as well as ample room to store suitcases, prams, coats etc.

Please do not climb the wooden stairs as they are unsafe!

The Llyn Peninsula is an ideal place to take a holiday, whether its a few weeks or a few days, there is lots to do, whether you are looking for a quiet space to contemplate life or a more active break, you’ll find the peninsula has something for everyone.

Walking

There are many paths to walk throughout the peninsula - we have a few excellent books on the shelf that can provide you with some inspiration on where to go - the one we use often is the Tea Shop Walks, which as the names suggests highlights walks which have cafes where you can get a nice cof-fee during and after your walk.

4

WHAT’S THERE TO DO?

9

Page 11: Welcome to Ty Canol

Horse Riding

There are a number of Riding Centres in the area - the one that we use frequently is Cilan, just near Sarn Bach, Abersoch - you’ll need to book as it does get busy in the summer - Call them on 01758 713276

Sailing

Abersoch Sailing School provide trials and full courses for those wanting to be educated during their break - http://www.abersochsailingschool.co.uk/ Tel 07917 525 540. If you are already competent, they do offer boats to hire. They even have pedaloes

Surfing

There are number of great beaches where you’ll find surfers, although probably the best is Hell’s Mouth. If you surf, by all ac-counts the surf is great. If you’re not, it’s al-ways a great experience just watching the surfers do their stuff

WaterSports

Wakeboarding/ WaterSkiing facilities are available from a number of out-lets on the peninsula - the company that we use is Offaxis - who have a shop in Abersoch and a centre in Pwllheli - http://www.offaxis.co.uk/ Tel - 01758 713407

Crabbing

Old fashioned entertainment can be found off the harbour walls in Aber-soch, Aberdaron and Nefyn

Beaches

The peninsula is blessed with some of the best beaches in the UK and the variation is one of the things that gets people coming back year af-ter year. Some of our favorites are;

“The beaches are just spectacular and so varied - definitely recommend Whistling Sands - a natural bay that would challenge any other throughout the world. And the coffee in the cafe is great too...”

10

Page 12: Welcome to Ty Canol

Whistling Sands - approx 10 min-utes drive from the cottage, this is a natural bay of golden sand, a nice coffee shop at one end and lots of rocks to climb at the other

Hells Mouth - Porth Neigwl - a spectacular bay, which you see perfectly from the top of Rhiw hill. A mile of perfect sand and the waves crashing in make from some dramatic scenes. More a walkers beach rather than a

place to sit and sun bathe.

Town Beach - Abersoch - a great beach for people watching - lots of activity on the water, lots of people walking by, backed by some de-lightful beach huts.

There’s loads more - take a look at the Ordnance Survey map which you’ll find on the book shelf - we keep discovering new beaches so if you find a good one, let us know!

“My 15 year old still talks about the days that we spent rock climbing, crabbing and messing around on the beaches”Georgina Watts

We’re not saying that we’ve tried every bar, cafe and restaurant on the peninsula so this is certainly no comprehensive guide but rather a list of our favorites and places that we would have no doubt about recommending:
