WORSHIP, PRAYER AND SACRAMENTS
The Catholic Church in England and Wales will hold a Eucharistic Congress for the whole country in Liverpool from Friday 7th—Sunday 9th September 2018. There will be events and presentations and talks by visiting speakers, such as Bishop Robert Barron, on the Friday and Saturday. On Sunday there will be a Mass in the Metropolitan Cathedral following by a Blessed Sacrament Procession through the streets. (At the last Eucharistic Congress in London in 1908 the Home Secretary banned the Procession!!) Mgr Allen, our Diocesan Coordinator, needs to send in a rough idea of numbers who might be interested in going on the Friday and or Satur-day (transport will be provided on both days and on the Sunday). If you might be in-terested can you let Fr. Paul or Fr. Michael know within the next two weeks. At this point we are collecting numbers rather than names. For further information, www.catholicnews.org.uk/adoremus2018 As Bishop Robert Byrne says ‘this is the first time in modern history that the Church in England and Wales has gathered for a National Congress on the scale envisaged. We really hope it will inspire and enthuse Communities in devotion to the Eucharist in its rightful context in the Mission of the Church.
There is a Deanery Mass for vocations to the priesthood, diaconate and religious life at St. Bernadette’s, Whitefield, on Tuesday 10th October at 7pm. All welcome. If you would like Mass celebrated one evening in your home, with family, friends and neighbours, please speak to Fr. Paul or Fr. Michael During October the Rosary will be recited after weekday Masses, together with the Prayer to St. Joseph. On Sundays (apart from 8th October) there will be Ro-sary and Benediction at St. Joseph’s.
Our parish story: From the Log Book 9th May 1966 The priest in charge took over possession and entered into residence at the new presbytery, known as St. Paul’s Presbytery. August 1966 Father Gerard Duffy was appointed assistant priest. 1968 Building operations on the church project were delayed by a few months be-cause the Diocese had not yet purchased the site of the church and presbytery (! Remember the presbytery was already built and occupied!!) Agreement was reached between Manchester Corporation and the Diocese. The work of building the church began in May. The retaining wall on the school side provided problems to be overcome.
WITNESSES TO CHRIST & HIS GOSPEL
On Saturday 21st October Mass will be at 10am and will be a Requiem Mass for the Repose of the Soul of Captain Henry Oswald Hill, MC, architect of St. Joseph’s Church, who was killed in action on 21st October 1917, flying over Germany. Following the Mass, a short ceremony will take place to name the street on the new housing development opposite church Henry Hill Close. We hope some of the visiting guests will have the chance to visit the church. Please be on hand to welcome them.
This weekend there will be a Pastoral Letter from the Bishop announcing our Diocesan Proc-ess, Hope in the Future, which Fr. Paul men-tioned last weekend. Copies of the Pastoral Let-ter are available in church. You can hear the Letter on https://soundcloud.com/salford-diocese/hope-in-the-
future-pastoral-letter
You can also hear the Bishop explaining what
this is all about on https://youtu.be/C54QUqR2dng
Both will be available from Sunday morning on the Diocesan

Pope Francis, writing on marriage and family life in Amoris Laetitia, comments on Paul’s hymn to love (1 Cor 13), (AL
105-6) Once we allow ill will to take root in our hearts, it leads to deep resentment. Paul writes that love “takes no ac-count of evil”; “is not resentful”. The opposite of resentment is forgiveness, rooted in a positive attitude that seeks to under-stand other people’s weaknesses and excuse them. Jesus said, “Father, forgive them; they know not what they do”. Yet we keep looking for more faults, imagining greater evils, presum-ing all kinds of bad intentions, and so resentment grows and deepens. Thus, every mistake or lapse on the part of a spouse can harm the bond of love and the stability of the family. Something is wrong when we see every problem as equally serious; we risk being unduly harsh with the failings of others. The just desire to see our rights respected turns into a thirst for vengeance rather than a reasoned defence of our dignity.
When we have been offended or let down, forgiveness is possible and desirable, but no one can say that it is easy. The truth is that “family communion can only be preserved and perfected through a great spirit of sacrifice. It requires a ready and generous openness of each and all to un-derstanding, to forbearance, to pardon, to reconciliation. There is no family that does not know how selfishness, discord, tension and conflict violently attack and at times mortally wound its own communion: hence there arise the many and varied forms of division in family life”. To reflect on: How willing I am to forgive?

Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC1246-52) "Every person not yet baptized and only such a person is able to be baptized." Since the beginning of the Church, adult Baptism is the common practice where the proclamation of the Gospel is still new. The catechumenate (preparation for Baptism) occupies an important place. This initiation into Christian faith and life should dispose the catechumen to receive the gift of God in Baptism, Confirmation, and the Eucharist. The formation of catechumens aims at bringing their conversion and faith to maturity, in response to the divine initiative and in union with the church community. The catechumenate is "a formation in the whole Christian life during which the disciples will be joined to Christ their teacher. Catechumens should be properly initiated into the mystery of salvation and practice of the evangelical vir-tues, and introduced into the life of faith, liturgy, and char-ity of the People of God by successive sacred rites." Catechumens "are joined to the Church, already of the household of Christ, and frequently already living a life of faith, hope, and charity." "With love and solicitude mother Church already embraces them as her own." Born with fallen human nature and tainted by original sin, children need new birth in Baptism to be freed from the power of darkness and brought into the realm of the freedom of the children of God, to which we are called. The gratuitousness of the grace of salvation is manifest in in-fant Baptism. The Church and parents would deny a child the priceless grace of becoming a child of God were they not to confer Baptism shortly after birth. Christian parents recognize that this practice accords with their role as nur-turers of the life God has entrusted to them. Infant Baptism is an immemorial tradition of the Church. There is explicit testimony to this practice from the second century on; from the beginning of the apostolic preaching, when whole "households" received baptism, in-fants may also have been baptized. TO PONDER: How does the preparation of adults for baptism differ from that of infants?
A poem by Joyce Kilmer for the month of the Holy Rosary
Not on the lute, nor harp of many strings
Shall all men praise the Master of all song. Our life is brief, one saith, and art is long; And skilled must be the laureates of kings.
Silent, O lips that utter foolish things! Rest, awkward fingers striking all notes wrong!
How from your toil shall issue, white and strong, Music like that God's chosen poet sings?
There is one harp that any hand can play, And from its strings what harmonies arise!
There is one song that any mouth can say, -- A song that lingers when all singing dies.
When on their beads our Mother's children pray Immortal music charms the grateful skies.
This week’s Feasts: Mon: The Guardian An-gels: today’s feast celebrates God’s constant care for each of his children. Tue: Bl. Columba Marmion, born Dublin in 1858, became priest, seminary professor and then a Benedictine monk in Belgium. He be-came a great Abbot, preacher and spiritual writer, dying in 1923. Ss Ewald the Dark and
Ewald the Fair, brothers from Northumbria, preached the Gospel among the Saxons. They were martyred in 692 near Dortmund, their bodies being cast into the Rhine. Wed: St Francis of Assisi, born in Assisi in 1182, was a light-hearted youth, but changed, giving up his inheritance, offering his whole life to God and embracing poverty. He gathered followers around him, instituting a Rule. The result was the Franciscan Order, known for preaching and for the love of poverty. Francis died in 1226. Fri: St Bruno, a great scholar and teacher, was born in Cologne in 1035; after a time teaching theology, he embraced a solitary life, settling at La Grande Char-treuse; he is considered to be the founder of the Carthusian order, which follows a way of poverty, silence, prayer and penance. He died in 1101. Sat: Our Lady of the Rosary; this feast was instituted by Pope St. Pius V on the anniversary of the naval battle at Lepanto (1571) under the name of Our Lady of Victory; the feast was given its present name by Pope Gregory XIII. This feast urges us to meditate on the mysteries of Christ, following Mary’s example.
