The great thing about Wellers Hill is that the school and the community works together as a team to ensure the children are getting the best education possible. One of the strengths of the school lies in the passion of the members of the P & C Association. The IPS School Council held their Term 2 meeting last week. The Council is moving forward with plans to further improve the school for students in the long term. As the plans are formalised the Council Chair will outline them to the P & C and school community. I would like to welcome two new members to the WHSS IPS Council. Mr Mark Sydney and Mr Charlie Fraser have joined the Council, with Mark being appointed as Council Chair. I look forward to working with both Mark and Charlie and the remainder of the Council to further improve outcomes for students at the school. We also farewell Mrs Jimelle Woodland tomorrow as she has accepted a transfer to West End State School. Jimelle has been at the school for a number of years and is recognised by all as an outstanding teacher. We will all miss her, however we wish her the very best at West End. The refurbishment of the hall commenced this week. There is a significant amount of work being done to renovate the hall which will make it a more usable space for students and staff. Once again, thank you to the P & C Association for funding and driving the improvement programme for the hall. There will be some minor work done at the school during the vacation period. Telstra will be repairing our phone system and will be digging a trench between the front gate and the office. I have also been removing a significant number of dangerous trees around the school over the past few weeks. The removal programme will continue over the holidays with the removal of some gums near the tennis courts that are pressuring the besser block retaining wall. Have a great holiday and we look forward to returning on Monday 11 July 2016. Kind regards John

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Parents and Community Members As we reach the end of Term 2 I would like to express my sincere thanks to the Wellers Hill State School community for the support offered to the school, from individual class interactions to the broader support through the P & C Association.

The great thing about Wellers Hill is that the school and the community works together as a team to ensure the children are getting the best education possible. I would also like to acknowledge the P & C Association and thank them for their unwavering support of the students at our school. FROM THE P&C PRESIDENT Many Thanks! Term 2 is always a busy one. We need to say a huge THANK YOU to all those involved in educating our children. The classroom teachers, specialist teachers, teacher aides, administration and support staff all work hard to ensure our children receive the best education possible. We often don’t realise the many hours of their own time spent planning lessons, marking homework, writing report cards or attending events such as the school disco or music night. On behalf of the P & C I would like to express our sincere thanks to all the staff at WHSS and wish them a relaxing holiday. Art Show update The 2016 Wellers Hill State School ‘Celebration of Art’ is being held on 10th & 11th September. If you would like to assist please email one of the committee members. TRAFFIC ACTION GROUP: Next Meeting Wednesday 27 th July @6:00pm https://www.qld.gov.au/transport/safety/rules/schools/#dropoff

BRISBANE CITY COUNCIL INFORMATION: School zones

School zone speed limits:

• 40km/h on roads where the normal speed limit is 50/60/70km/h

• 60km/h on roads where the normal speed limit is 80km/h

• 60km/h or 80 km/h on roads where the normal speed limit is 90/100km/h

• 80km/h on roads where the normal speed limit is 110km/h.

The most common school zone speed limit is 40km/h.

School zone times

The standard times that most school zones apply in Queensland are 7–9am and 2–4pm.

Some council areas have different school zone times. Contact your local council ( http://www.dilgp.qld.gov.au/local-government-directory/ ) to find out if your area has different zone times—or check the school zone speed limit signs near you.

When you are entering a school zone that operates outside of the normal times, you will see a flashing light school zone sign.

When you are entering a school zone that operates all day (for example, 7am–4pm) because the school has a split campus where children often cross the road throughout the day—you may see a flashing light school zone sign.

School travel options

Have you tried walking, cycling, or catching public transport with your children to school?

Driving your children to school each day could mean they miss out on exercise and other life skills.

Learn more about other school travel options ( https://www.qld.gov.au/transport/public/school/travel/index.html ).

Next TAG Meeting: 27th July 6:00 pm in the Library Annexe

FROM THE GUIDANCE OFFICER Nationally Collection of Data on School Students wi th Disability Dear Parents/Carers, Collecting data on school students with disability helps teachers, principals and education authorities support the participation of students with disability in schooling on the same basis as students without disability. All Australian Governments have agreed to work together on the annual collection of data on school students with disability. All Australian schools participate in this annual data collection. The data provided to the Australian Government is aggregated data only. Please be reassured that the Department will not provide on to another organisation any data that can identify an individual student. The only data being collected at the school level to be reported nationally is the:

• number of students in the school who are provided with an adjustment to address a disability;

• level of adjustments we provide for those students; and

• broad category of disability.

Consultation with parents is important not only for the data collection but also to ensure you are aware of the adjustments being provided to support your child. We will therefore continue to consult with you. While only data that cannot identify your child will be submitted outside of the Department, if you do not wish for your child’s details to be included, please let me know. Information and fact sheets are available to help you make a decision from the: • Department’s website: http://education.qld.gov.au/curriculum/disability-data-collection.html

• Australian Government Department of Education website: http://education.gov.au/nationally-consistent-collection-data-school-students-disability

Alternatively, if you have any queries about the collection or use of this data I encourage you to contact Anne Chapman – Guidance Officer on 3249 1333. RESPECTFUL RELATIONSHIPS EDUCATION PROGRAM The Respectful Relationships education program has been developed for Prep to year 12 students in consultation with teachers, school communities, domestic and family violence organisations and external experts. A growing body of evidence shows that social and emotional learning of this nature leads to:

• improved social and emotional skills, self-concept, bonding to school and classroom behaviour

• less disruptive classroom behaviour, aggression, bullying and delinquent acts

• reduced emotional distress such as depression, stress or social withdrawal.

Page 6: WELLERS HILL STATE SCHOOL · 2019-12-18 · 1 WELLERS HILL STATE SCHOOL Strive to Succeed School Captains: Kai Braun, Elizabeth Cooper Hannah Moss, Alec Wills Telephone: 07 3249 1333

School resources provide opportunities for teachers to guide discussions, address concerns, and help students work through sensitive and complex issues.

All resources are practical and easy to use and encourage the use of social and emotional learning pedagogy including group work, discussion, role plays, scenario work and empathy-based inquiry.

Resources for parents are also available. These resources inform parents of the respectful relationships education their child is undertaking in Years Prep to 2, Years 3 to 6, Years 7 to 10 and Years 11 to 12 and support parents to reinforce learning at home.

LIBRARY NEWS Hi Everyone I would like to say a huge thank you to several groups in our school.

1 The families that have donated books to the Library - we love getting new books to read.

2 The wonderful parents and grandparents who have helped cover the Library books we are now on top of this and only a few to go.

3 Cathey Crisante and Michelle Underhill you have both put in extra time on top of your own work these last few months – this has helped me enormously.

Lastly, I’m needing someone to be the Co-ordinator for Book Club. This requires sorting the books either once or twice a term – it’s not hard or if you bring a few friends it doesn’t take long. If we don’t have a Co-ordinator then we won’t be able to do Club for the rest of the year. Please come see me if you are interested. Kind Regards Bernadette Hoffman
