A wonderful evening was spent at the Civic Centre in November to celebrate the culmination of thirteen years of schooling for Year 12. After being presented by year advisors Mr Nonnenmacher and Mr Sheedy, the graduates danced with their parents to Ed Sheeran, before enjoying speeches, well wishes and a delicious three course meal. The boys looked very debonair, whilst the girls looking positively stunning in their formal gowns. Wellington High wishes them all well as they embark on their journeys into adulthood, and look forward to hearing back from them with their successes.

Samantha Anderson was announced winner of the AHA NSW regional hospitality scholarship for 2017 at the AHA NSW Awards for Excellence in Sydney on November 21.

The $20,000 grant allows the lucky recipient to undertake a 2.5 year Bachelor of Business degree (International Hotel and Resorts Management) at BMIHMS with the money going towards accommodation costs.

She was one of four finalists vying for the scholarship made available through a partnership from AHA NSW and the Blue Mountains International Hotel Management School (BMIHMS).

“It really is a life changer for young people from the bush, with previous winners coming from areas including Mittagong, Wellington, Grenfell, Griffith, Forster, the Illawarra and Hunter Valley.”

Samantha said she was in shock as the Hon. Paul Toole MP announced her as the successful finalist.

“It happened so quickly but at the same time it was such a slow process,” Samantha recalled.

“I had a thought that I was going to win and to think positively, and then it happened.

“It was an amazing feeling – I was crying, my mum was crying, but it wasn’t until we got back to our room that I settled down and it sunk in.

“I was speechless.”

Samantha said the financial support will assist her in following her dreams in which she one day hopes to become the owner of her own hotel

Wellington’s Kuhailan Jones has been recognised for her passion and dedication to science when she received a Victor Chang Science Award on Wednesday.

Named after the late Cardiac Surgeon and pioneer of modern heart transplantation, the Victor Chang School Science Awards were established to celebrate young, gifted students and to foster growth in scientific studies.

Now in its 13th year, the awards also encourage the next generation of scientists to pursue a career in medical research.

The Year 12 student nominated by her teacher and acknowledges her tenacity and commit-ment in the classroom.

Kuhailan, who is a Vice-Captain at her school, said she was “very surprised” to hear she was going to receive the award.

“I didn’t know I was getting nominated,” she said.

Kuhailan studies Chemistry and Biology at Wellington High School and said she was “really interested in the way things work and the little stuff behind everything.”

According to Dr Ralph Patrick from the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute, nurturing the future of Australian research is vital.

“Australia has such a proud science history, and through acknowledging these young students we’re giving the next generation of scientists the opportunity to see how research can directly touch people’s everyday lives,” Dr Patrick.

“As a scientist, not only are you contributing to building knowledge, but you are constantly solving problems and seizing opportunities while improving the well-being of society.”

SPORT What a busy year we have had in Sport! WHS had many teams participate in the NSW CHS Knockout and other various competitions throughout the year. We have had students attend and be successfully chosen to represent WSSA at the NSW CHS Championships. The Don Green Cup was another sporting feature in 2017. This saw WHS defend the Don Green Cup against St Mary’s. There are also many students who have been actively engaged in the wider community taking part in a mixture of sports. It is great to see so many students participating in physical activity on a regular basis. Throughout the year the Swimming and Athletics Carnivals were held and we are hoping that in 2018 one of other houses can ban together and defeat Norman. The Cross Country Carnival was held slightly different to previous years as we incorporated a little more fun for the students and had a Colour Run. We are hoping to improve on this and hold another Colour Run next year. 2018 will be another eventful year. To get Term One under way the students will be required to select a sport for the term and the Swimming Carnival will be held Wednesday 14th February. We would like to invite family and community members to come and watch the students swim. The knockout teams will need to be formed and students will need to listen out for WSSA trials for their chosen sport. Thank you to all the students and parents/carers who have been involved in school sport this year.

Principal's Message

R M Cosier Principal

2017 has certainly been a year full of activity and excellent student achievement. I am writing this having spent a portion of today enjoying the company of our year 12 after receiving their HSC results. This is always a satisfying experience as it is our last opportunity to share achievements of people we have seen grow from shy children to confident and composed adults ready to put their stamp on the world. Our most notable achievers were Ellie Flanagan, Lucy Darney and Madi Hannelly who all gained a Band 6 in at least one of their subjects. Our focus on Restorative Practice here in the school has certainly made a significant impact on the culture of our school. We are seeing more and more students displaying empathy and care for others and it is also allowing us to forge a much closer relationship with our parents and the wider community. We look forward to building on these gains in 2018. The end of the year, whilst always brings satisfaction with the progress we have made, always comes with a tinge of sadness as we say goodbye to some of our staff. This year we are farewelling 3 staff members who are going in a diverse range of directions. Miss Stacey Norval, who has been on our temporary staff in TAS, has gained a permanent position at Lithgow High and we wish her every success in her new environment and thank her for the valuable contribution she has made to our school and students. Miss Carla Rayson is also leaving us to take up a position in PDHPE at Taree High School. I know the Support Unit staff and students are going to miss her as she has been an integral part of that faculty. We will miss her contribution to her school but I am sure she will enjoy the new challenge ahead. Sadly, Mrs Trounce has submitted her resignation to the Department after 16 years as a permanent staff member here at Wellington High School. I know there are a great many students who are indebted to her for the time and effort she put in to ensure they received the best possible education. Marion has been an outstanding contributor to our school over this long time period and we will all miss her constant presence. We wish her well in her retirement. Finally, I would like to wish you all the compliments of the season and hope that many of you can enjoy a relaxing break. Thank you for your support this year and I look forward to working with you in 2018.

Remember- Year 7,11 and 12 students return to school on Tuesday 30th of January and 8,9 and 10 return on Wednesday 31st of January.

Support End of Year Reward Excursion On Monday the 11th of December 13 support students travelled to Dubbo for their end of year Reward Excursion. Students had to receive 30 stamps for meeting various social and behaviour expectations. These expectations included following instructions, using appropriate language, arriving to class on time, accepting decisions, friendships and bringing equipment to class. The students were rewarded with Bubble Soccer and Laser Tag at Dubbo Sports World. Students also enjoyed having recess and lunch at a park in Dubbo. In Bubble Soccer Harry scored 2 goals even though there wasn’t much soccer being played. The students particularly enjoyed having the opportunity to knock over their peers and teachers in Bubble Soccer even though no one could knock Mr Ross off his feet. Laser Tag saw a lot of competitiveness especially by the boys. Ian and Mitch were the last two standing in the free for all Laser Tag game. It was a great way to start the last week of school and everyone really enjoyed the day.

Careers Corner Well another year has come to an end, and hasn’t it gone fast. The careers world was busy again this year. Students have been involved many opportunities to broaden their knowledge and skills in many different areas. It has been a lot of fun and much information has been gained. We have been lucky enough to be a part of the ‘Future Moves’ programs once again this year and many students have participated in different days and camps with Charles Sturt University, Meet a Keeper program at Western Plains Zoo, Shearing courses, TVET courses, Year 10 Work Experience Program, Tertiary Information Days, Job Expos and much more. Year 12 have already outdone themselves gaining an abundance of offers to many different programs and courses. This is great to see out students excelling themselves so quickly after completing their schooling. Please make sure you double check all dates of any offers. You need to make sure the correct course is your top preference in UAC by the due date to be able to receive another offer in a different round. The closing dates for changes of preferences during rounds are: Change of preference must be made through UAC’s website by midnight on the relevant closing date. Double check the conditions of any offer you receive. Do you need to reach a certain ATAR? Do you have to contact the university by a certain date to confirm any information? Do you have to attend an interview of orientation? MAKE SURE YOU GET CONFIRMATION OF EVERYTHING YOU SEND! When you accept offers or defer a course, make sure you receive some kind of confirmation email, if you do not receive anything ring UAC straight away. Take screen shots and photocopies of everything you send to back you up if something gets lost at the other end.

I hope everyone has a safe and exciting break. Looking forward to 2018 and what it has in store for all our students. A massive good luck to all the Year 12 students on their new adventures whether it be a tertiary course, apprenticeships/traineeship, gap year, full time work or whatever else life has to offer. Take every opportunity you can and enjoy. Miss Pixton Careers Adviser

TAS FACULTY REPORT 2017 Another busy year is almost over and its time, once again, to reflect on the wonderful achievements and highlights that have occurred in the TAS faculty.

This year we welcomed Mr Craig Sheedy to the faculty with his skills in Metal, Design and Timber Technology. We look forward to him contributing his wealth of expertise to the TAS faculty in 2018.

We also welcomed Miss Stacey Norval to relieve Alicia Stevenson on Maternity Leave. Stacey enjoyed teaching Food Technology and Hospitality with a highlight for year 11 Hospitality conducting a regular Coffee Club and excursion to Sydney. We congratulate Stacey on her permanent appointment to Lithgow High school in 2018 and wish her all the best in her future teaching career. We welcomed Mrs Stevenson back in Term 4.

We have been fortunate to get our coffee machine up and running for our new hospitality course “Food and Beverage operations”. Students have been selling coffees and milkshakes to the staff every Wednesday in a simulated café experience. The Year 7 and 8 students studied units of work in numerous areas of Technology Mandatory such as Animals, Timber, Promotional media design, Metals, Textiles, Mixed materials and Food. This gave all classes the opportunity to work with various mediums and develop new skills using a wide range of technology. All TAS teachers have introduced the 3D drawing program called Auto desk Fusion 360 into a number of their classes. This has allowed us to enhance drawings for major portfolios and be able to print off products using our 3D printer, the way of the future. This year we established a Technology room with 12 computers, a smart board and three 3D printers. This room is dedicated to improving student’s outcomes in their portfolios. Congratulations to Design and Technology student Ashleigh Parkes who produced a fabulous project, which was selected in the top 25 of the state. You can see photos of her project in the Design and Technology report. This year sees the end of Mrs Marion Trounce’s career at Wellington High School ending on a high note with her participation with D&T students. Mrs Trounce over the years has dedicated herself to educating NSW public education students in Textiles and Food Technology, enjoying many successful HSC results. Her expertise in those areas will be greatly missed. We wish her all the best in her retirement. Mrs Tammy Nugent (Relieving Head Techer TAS)

Year 7 Mixed Materials Year 7 have worked hard throughout the year in the Technology Mandatory Mixed Materials course. They have enjoyed designing, making and decorating their individual name signs. The unit focuses on signage, advertising and brand awareness. The students get to design their own logos and brand names from researching existing well-known brands. They have also designed and built unique CO2 powered dragsters that they have raced against their classmates. The dragsters are decorated in the student’s own brand colours, simulating real race cars and their sponsor’s colours. Mr C Sheedy

Year 7 Technology Mandatory – Food Year 7 have worked hard throughout the year in the Technology Mandatory Food course. They have enjoyed designing their own recipes, including Salad Wrap, Cupcakes, Mini Quiche, Burgers and Pizza. The unit focuses on food safety, hygiene and nutrition. The students have an opportunity to try the recipe first before designing their own version. They are required to plate and present each recipe, before sitting down at a set table to eat as a class. Year 11 Industrial Technology Timber Year 11 have been busy throughout the year honing their practical skills in the Industrial Technology Timber course. The course is focused on Timber Products and Furniture Technologies. They started the course making a picture frame that required four different joints to be constructed using only hand tools. Once the students completed their practice project they applied their skills in producing a keepsake box that also required four different hand cut joints. The final project for the year was to construct a bedside table using all of the hand tools and machinery available in the workshop. The bedside table provided opportunities for the students to modify the design and include their own personal enhancements, such as turned legs, routed edges and decorative side rails. The two latter projects also required a detailed portfolio to document the design and construction process. The skills learnt will help the students to design and produce a successful Major Project for their HSC next year. Mr C Sheedy

Western Plains Cultural Centre

Sophie Hawke and the Makeylee Brien started an exhibition of their works at the Western Plains Cultural

Centre on the 9th of December. Their works are part of an exhibition called “Make the Mark” which is a

collection of HSC artworks from around the Dubbo region. Both students were selected for the exhibition

with their drawing and collection of work projects from the Visual Arts HSC examination. The official

opening for the Make your Mark Exhibition is on the 15th December at 6:00pm.

Too often amazing HSC artworks which are the products of months of concentrated effort and

manifestations of inspiration, talent and angst, never see the light of day after being marked by the

examiners. This multimedia exhibition gives everyone the opportunity to celebrate the marvel of the high

standards and diversity of our Year 12 students studying Visual Art.

Sophie’s work arrived only at the last minute to the gallery due to it being nominated for ArtExpress. The

work was not selected for exhibition at other regional galleries but achieved an outstanding result being

selected by the Western Plains Cultural Centre. The conceptual ideas for the storyline in Sophie’s work was

taken from a range of cultures to produce an artwork that embraces multiculturalism in Australia. Sources

of ideas came from Norse Mythology, Japan, Scandinavia and Italy, as well as other creatures such as the

Nymph which appear in the ‘folk law’ of multiple cultures. Her work was presented as a large scale book

and as a soft cover publication.

Makeylee’s work is a series of six digital prints on canvas which incorporated painted symbols. Her work explores the nature of the ‘modern man’, as society attempting to rewrite ideals and encourage men to express themselves, letting their emotions flow. She made use of colour to show emotions such as loneliness, fear, sadness, envy, happiness, and anger. Through the work, she hoped to show people that men have emotions, and it is more than okay to express them. But most of all, she wished to show men one thing: It is okay to feel. Both works will be on display at the Western Plains Cultural Centre from the 9th December until the 4th March 2018.
