Welcome back to an action packed Term 3 full of learning, connecting and fun!
☺ A special welcome to a number of new enrolments and their families, who are
joining our great school this term. We do hope you settle quickly and find a
welcoming and supportive community at Wentworthville.
Yesterday the staff met for our day of professional learning on our Term 3 School Development Day.
We had a most productive learning day and had sessions about:
Learning Intentions Success Criteria (LISC) – a session presented by Mrs Eastwood. LISC is so
vital as we move forward at Wentworthville PS in developing the teaching and learning cycle as it
describes clearly what the teacher wants the students to know, understand, and be able to do as a
result of the learning and teaching activities. As we continue to develop students in future focussed
thinking it is vital that the learning intentions of a lesson or series of lessons tells students what they
should know, understand and be able to do, and the success criteria helps teachers to decide
whether their students have in fact achieved the learning intention.
The Wellbeing Framework – a session presented by Mrs Di Chio assisted staff in enhancing the
work we have already been investing in over the last few years as a specific focus. Wellbeing is
best described as the quality of a person’s life. Wellbeing needs to be considered across a number

of domains including: cognitive, emotional, social, physical and spiritual wellbeing. As the Department
notes in the Wellbeing Framework for Schools document ‘there are strong links between school
excellence and wellbeing. Schools could consider teaching and learning and the development of
wellbeing as parallel, integrated complementary processes.’
An update on the Department’s resources on our portal page on Disability and supporting students with
additional needs
Voice Care for Teachers –a session presented by a Speech Pathologist. This session specifically
addressed strategies to assist staff to look after their voices and to help prevent
voice problems. In our profession our voice is the tool of our trade!
STAFFING UPDATE
Mrs Cozad will continue in her relieving role at the Nirimba office for the remainder
of the year as a Wellbeing Engagement officer. Ms Camilleri will continue teaching
class K/1C and both Mr Train and Mrs Gladden will relieve as the Assistant
Principal (Support) during Mrs Cozad’s secondment.
Our General Assistant (GA) Mr Welton (who has been on Long Service Leave for
the last 12 months) is transitioning to retirement and officially relinquished his one day per week at
Wentworthville PS during the school holiday period. We wish him well as he transitions to retirement! ☺ Mr
Wiles our GA (who is permanent 4 days a week) will continue working on the Monday until this vacancy is
filled.
As part of the Department’s commitment to improving student outcomes we have a staffing increase in our
Quality Teaching Successful Students (QTSS) initiative for Semester 2 and beyond. We will be utilising the
time to continue to up skill staff in Learning Intentions Success Criteria (LISC), technology and further develop
our mentoring of teachers via our very competent leaders, the Assistant Principals (Mrs Rafidi, Mrs Eastwood,
Mrs Di Chio, Mr Warren and Mr Train / Mrs Gladden).

Wonderful Happenings at Wenty!
Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Competition
The Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Competition is
a state-wide public speaking competition organised by the
NSW Department of Education. It aims to heighten the
awareness of multicultural issues among NSW primary school
students while developing their interest in public speaking and improving their confidence and speech-
writing skills.
On the 28th June 2017 four students represented our school in the Multicultural
Perspectives Public Speaking Competition at Merrylands Public School.
These students were Jocelyn Arkapaw 5/6H, Zahra Sarwary 5M, Jheel Gandhi 3/4D
and Hari Ramsundar 4/5S. All four students put in a fantastic effort and delivered
exceptional prepared and impromptu speeches. We are very proud of you.
Enrolments being taken now for 2018 (K-6)
As you can see in our community with all the cranes and construction, we are growing! As a school, we
want to be on the ‘front foot’ and ready for all the students and families who will join us in 2018.
Our Kindergarten 2018 planning is well underway. If you haven’t yet enrolled your pre-schooler for
Kindergarten 2018 at WPS, please collect an enrolment form from the office. You will need to bring with
you originals of proof of residential address, birth certificate and immunisation records and any visa
paperwork (if required).
If you have friends living in the area who have children of school starting age you might like to let them
know it is time to sign up and enrol their children for school in 2018.

Donations of flags from Wentworthville Public School families
As part of Wentworthville celebrating our cultural diversity as a school I invite
families to donate a flag for flying at the school which represents your family
heritage. The school will randomly choose a different country flag to fly each
week next to the Australian and Aboriginal flags. We will have student leaders
put flags of a variety of countries up and down each week.
We will have a list of countries published in our newsletter each fortnight, so you can see what countries
are already represented. This will assist the school in ensuring we do not have five of the same flag!
If you would like to participate, we welcome your flag donation to the school. Some requirements are
outlined below to ensure the process runs smoothly:
Please ensure you contact the school office on 9631 8529 to check if the country you are
considering has not already had a flag purchased for the school.
Please note the following desirable dimensions for a flag that is durable for external flying.
Flag Length – min 80cm – max 100cm (1 metre)
Flag Width – min 170cm – max 200cm (2 metres)
Thank you for being part of our school’s wonderful cultural diversity!
