From the Principal – Denise Lockrey

It has certainly been a busy couple of weeks at Wentworthville PS with our PBL signs being installed,

18 students representing our school at the Opera House for the Festival of Instrumental Music, a

Premiers Spelling Bee first place getter and to top it off a range of events to celebrate Father’s Day!

Thank You

Many people make things happen at our great school and this is always best achieved with a

team effort.

Thank you to:

Our P&C volunteers under Shanti’s leadership who assisted in providing students the opportunity to

purchase a gift for dad or the significant person in their life and participate in the Father’s Day raffle.

They wrapped gifts, sold tickets and sold items for the students! Well done ☺

Mrs Lawrence and Mrs Hall for supporting the 18 students who performed at the Opera House in a

massed ensemble for the Festival of Instrumental Music last Wednesday night. Great job!

Mr Williams who supported four students attending the Premier’s Spelling Bee and having a first

place getter! How impressive!

Mr Warren who supported a number of Stage 3 students who

participated in a Maths Extension day held at Darcy Road PS last week.

They certainly expanded their mathematical minds and worked on their

collaboration and critical thinking skills!

Our P&C volunteers who cooked for the BBQ Father’s Day Breakfast

–thank you Felicity, Sharron (and Sharron’s dad!)

Mr Wiles (our General Assistant) and North Parramatta Bunnings who

conducted out first workshop for our Men of Wenty (MOW) –our dads

and grandads. It was such a positive but windy morning and they enjoyed constructing their tool boxes,

kindly donated by Bunnings. This community engagement activity is so positive and we are continuing to

build relationships with our school community.

Our P&C volunteers who cooked for the Council Election BBQ – Thanks to Felicity, Sharron, Leanne,

Raghu, Catherine, Thushy, Grant, and two students: Chloe and Crystal. They were set up from 7:30am for

the voting opening at 8am and finished cooking at 5:30pm all cleaned and packed away at 6pm when

polling closed! An amazing effort and raised funds for P&C which ultimately assist all students at WPS.

Well done team! ☺

Last Wednesday, Mrs. Lawrence and Mrs. Hall took 18 very

excited students into Sydney to perform at the Opera House,

as part of the combined recorder ensemble in the Festival of

Instrumental Music. They left school in the morning and

travelled by train into the city where they rehearsed with hundreds of other recorder

players from all over New South Wales.

After the rehearsal, they spent time in the Botanic Gardens

before heading to Circular Quay for dinner.

The concert in the evening was amazing, and featured

instrumental groups from a number of schools. The

recorder ensemble played 3 quite challenging pieces, which

they have been learning since February.

The concert finished with a very rousing piece, which was

played by 700 recorder players and 300 string players.

Congratulations to Shreya, Aesha, Sasha, Jocelyn, Vandana, Sanatani, Maya, Marwa, Riya, Jalleni, Hari,

Jiah, Jheel, Aditi, Monica, Vaidehi, Dakshina, and Samya. Their hard work paid off and Mrs. Hall and Mrs.

Lawrence were extremely proud of them!

Report by Nuha Dole of 6W

On the 5th of September, four students from Wentworthville Public School

represented us at the 2017 Premier’s Spelling Bee Regional Final at The

Meadows Public School. Two junior

students, Anvi Mehta and Diya

Pandey, competed in the Junior

Regional Final and made it to the

fourth round. The winner was a young

girl from Parramatta East Public School and the runner up was

from The Meadows Public

School.

Naman Mehta and Nuha Dole

represented us at the Senior

Regional Final. The

competition was over five rounds and eventually reached the unseen

round, which included words that the competitors hadn’t seen on their

practise lists. Nuha made it into the top ten, finishing ninth.

Naman went on to win the competition and qualified for the

State finals in November. Well done Naman! The runner up

was a boy from Westmead Public School. Both Naman and

the runner up received a dictionary and thesaurus from Macquarie Dictionaries, the official word list

supplier.

The Year 6 leaders and Year 5 supporting leaders have made

great efforts in each Peer Support lesson to build the resilience

of the students in their group.

In the final session of the module Moving Forward children will

reflect on what they have learned. The students will reflect

upon their strengths, achievements and people who support

them when faced with challenging situations.

These protective factors promote confidence and motivate students to approach new

situations where they can then apply the Pause, Plan, Proceed Model.

Enrolments being taken NOW for 2018 (K - 6)

As you can see in our community with all the cranes and construction, we are growing!

As a school, we want to be on the ‘front foot’ and ready for all the students and families

who will join us in 2018.

Our Kindergarten 2018 planning is well underway. If you haven’t yet enrolled your pre-schooler for

Kindergarten 2018 at WPS, please collect an enrolment form from the office. You will need to bring with

you originals of proof of residential address, birth certificate and immunisation records and any visa

paperwork (if required).

If you have friends living in the area who have children of school starting age you might like to let them

know it is time to sign up and enrol their children for school in 2018.

We would like your feedback about the possibility of initiating Mathletics as part of the classroom and

homework program at Wentworthville PS.

The Mathletics program is completely online and is aligned to the requirements of the Australian Maths

Curriculum and is designed for all learning styles.

Mathletics assists students to think critically, make learning choices, seek help when they need it and

reflect on their learning by being able to visually track their progress.

Families would be required to pay an annual subscription of approximately $10-$15.

Please complete the survey below:

For further information about Mathletics see the website below

This Term, our school will be participating in the Partners in Learning parent survey, another part of

the Tell Them From Me suite of surveys. The survey asks parents and carers questions about different

factors that are known to impact on student wellbeing and engagement.

Running this survey will help our school understand parents’ and carers’ perspectives on their child’s

experience at school. These include: communication between parents/carers and staff, activities and

practices at home and parent/carer views on the school's support of learning and behaviour. This valua-

ble feedback will help our school make practical improvements.

The survey is conducted entirely online on smartphones, iPads, tablets, laptops or computers. The sur-

vey will typically take 15 minutes or less to complete and is completely confidential. The parent survey

will be conducted between 21 August and 13 October. Although participating in the survey is entirely

voluntary, your responses are very much appreciated.

More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au.
