Baseball season is over. The Cubbies didn’t make it (sob). I guess I put too much stock in “Back to the Future 2”! That’s what I get for believing in the fantasy of movies. What IS real is that we are in the month of November and real things are happening. The matching grant money from the RI Foundation is here. We’ve received the matching money, allowing us to complete our many projects here - and soon, around the world. Director Lore Woodley is poised to start several community service projects and can sure use your help. Chairman, Glen will be showing “Rotary Cares” to a couple of families from the Huggs House. This great project goes down on Saturday, November 21 st . If you want to help and haven’t signed up yet, there is still time at this coming meeting. We will be welcoming the H.O.M.E. van to our club soon to present them with the support funds they need to get out in the community and provide free healthcare to the homeless. Director Debbie Goforth is in the process of setting up a presentation for the Jefferson School to present them with the funds for completing their massive Hyrdoponics project. She will need support during the day to attend a school assembly to present our check in front of the whole school. More on this to follow. Women in Need will be getting much needed storage and bedding for their houses. We can still use hygiene kits to provide women who are just getting started in the program. International Director Paul is in the final stages of the joint project with new sister club, The Rotary Club of Zgornji Brnik, Slovenia. Global Grant Chair, Rich is looking to finalize the second year of our project in Romania. Wow! I’m tired just writing about it! Remember to E-mail [email protected] with the scrambled word! If all of these projects don’t get you excited about Rotary…the nominating committee is about ready to announce the slate of candidates for the 2016-2017 Rotary year. Yes, we already know that Marco is the President-elect, but the proposed board must be announced to the club 30 days prior to the election, and yes, our members vote. It is in our by-laws, Article 3. Our annual meeting is on December 21 st , our 20 th anniversary party. Can’t remember all this? Be there Monday. Our speaker will be Dr. Bart Pillen whose topic is “Mental Floss”. A Socially Conscious Entrepreneur

In my twenties, I became an impact entrepreneur, spending my days finding responsible factories to work with and talking to photographers about how to thoughtfully portray women in advertising campaigns for Citizen’s Mark, a line of high-quality blazers I started for a generation of socially conscious and empowered women on the rise. I was selected for a Rotary Scholarship in 2009 and was introduced to the concept of vocational service. I met

dozens of Rotarians in my district who had found opportunities to serve society through their occupations. I went on to complete a Master of Arts in Human Values and Contemporary Global Ethics at King’s College London as a Rotary Scholar. I then worked in Geneva, Switzerland in policy advocacy and management consulting.

It was in building my wardrobe for these jobs that I discovered a niche. There was a dearth of professional wear for women LARY on the rise - that space between newly minted professional and seasoned executive. There were few options at all, and even fewer from brands committed to responsible sourcing, production, and branding.

I started to build what would become Citizen’s Mark using the perspective I had gained from my master’s degree and the insightful conversations I had with Rotarians. The relationships I built in Europe were instrumental to my ability to build a responsible supply chain.

Rotary truly changed the trajectory of my career. From meeting Rotarians in so many industries and countries to getting a solid academic foundation, Rotary was and is, instrumental in transforming careers into opportunities for high-impact work that serves society.

S P O T L I G H T on Mary Hoffman

In 2010 I found free time and wanted to serve the local and international communities. I joined Rotary! After five months I began to think that Rotary was not for me. I enjoyed the new friends and the weekly programs but I had not had my "Rotary moment" and considered other volunteer opportunities.

One day at work I received a call from a local number.  Normally it would just go to voicemail but for some reason I answered.   It was a fellow Rotarian asking me if I'd be willing to serve as Vice President of the club due to a sudden vacancy.  I decided it would be a good way to get involved, and I knew it would help me decide if I wanted to continue with Rotary.   I agreed, was thanked and then told "oh, one more thing - you know this means you will be president next year.”  The phone went dead. I tried to call back to decline but couldn't get through.  I figured I would just decline at the next meeting, but as I arrived, club members congratulated me and thanked me for agreeing to serve as President-elect.  I'd been tricked! I knew this was a big job that would take a lot of time, so did the only logical thing. I retured to work and told my boss “I’m to be president of Rotary so I have to quit - now.”     I soon retired from Washington State University in Pullman, WA where I had worked for 25 years as a department and college administrator.

Next, I decided to learn what Rotary is all about. I signed up for the annual conference in Bangkok and talked another club member into attending. It was there that I really began to see the power of Rotary.  I can't describe the feeling of being in a meeting with individuals from all over the world who toss aside political, religious, and cultural differences to find ways to help those in need.  It was one of the most profound experiences in my life.   I was thrilled when I learned that   the motto for the year during my presidency  would be "Peace through Service.”   This motto perfectly described my belief that, by helping others we create peace locally and internationally.

I returned to my club with two goals:  first, to start an international project;   second, to serve on a Rotaplast mission.  Just two weeks after my return, our club heard of a Rotoplast project in need of volunteers. That October, I   joined a group of Rotarians   in southeast India - it was a great experience!

Returning to Pullman, I contacted a friend who had worked in Tanzania. I asked if he'd be interested in partnering with Rotary to expand upon his work.  He agreed,  and we soon organized a fundraiser and learned about global grants.  We raised $25,000, which resulted in over $60,000 in matching funds.   Now, a small village in Tanzania has electricity and new   rainwater collection systems.   A team from Pullman will soon travel to Tanzania to provide electrical and clean water curriculum to thousands of students.

Following my year as president, I served as Assistant District Governor.  Despite my experience as treasurer, president and ADG, I still feel that I have a lot to learn about Rotary. I look forward to membership in the Rotary Club of Honolulu Sunset.

I'm an army brat and lived throughout the US and in Germany during my youth.  I attended Washington State University and have a degree in Education and am a CPA.  I met my husband Mark while attending school in Pullman, Washington.  We own a grain farm in Pullman; my husband grew up on the farm and we spent the first 15 years of our married life actively farming (I can drive a truck but took my mother-in-law’s advice and avoided learning how to operate any other equipment).   I feel fortunate to have lived the farm life and to have raised our two children, Kayla and Scott there.   Kayla graduated in agricultural economics and works for Cenex-Harvest States along with her husband in Minot, North Dakota.  They have one two year old daughter, Esme' (who is super cute!)  Our son Scott received his culinary degree from the Cordon Bleu' Institute in Portland; he's a fantastic cook but decided not to continue in this field and is now back in school in Eugene Oregon.

Mark and I moved to Hawaii two years ago.  I'm currently employed at the College of Natural Sciences at UH Manoa as the Director of Operations; Mark is the maintenance manager for the Salvation Army.  We feel lucky to work and live in Manoa!    I'm a member of the master's swim club and try to get to the pool every morning before work  at 5:30.   We enjoy the outdoors and are having fun exploring Oahu.
