Needs• Schools are under intense pressure for students to achieve
higher gains on state and national “tests”
• Teachers are coping to change from the way they learned to teach, to data-driven methods (New Evaluation)
• States and Districts must utilize Common Core Standards & Next Gen Science Standards for developing content
• Context - Students are able to achieve higher gains when they can connect learning to their life experiences
• Competition for student interest is INTENSE!
• West Virginia faces many different educational inequities
![Page 9: West Virginia University Academic Innovation Next Generation Mathematics Communities of Practice Greg Strimel](https://reader036.vdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022062518/56649e9d5503460f94b9e354/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
• 89% of high school teachers described their students as “well prepared” for college while only approximately 25% of college faculty believed that their incoming students were prepared for their courses
• This report suggested a continuing lack of curriculum alignment between K-12 and Post-secondary (The Chronicle of Higher Education, 2013)
• 67% of teachers expected to change their current curriculum "not at all" or "slightly" to fit the new standards.
Needs

Addressing “Common” Challenges to in Implementing Common Core State Standards Integrated Math Curriculum
Presented byLou Maynus, Dr. Edna Meisel, & Greg
Strimel

• Inconsistent implementation • Inadequate on-going teacher support and
professional development • Inadequate high quality, interactive, and engaging
standards-based resources for use inside and outside the classroom.
• Continuous gap between secondary and post-secondary mathematics
• Absence of an evaluation system that enables data-driven decisions to inform mathematics curriculum and instruction.
Challenges
