COMMUNITY CORNER

We have reached a time when vacant lots and spots in shopping mall start filling up with evergreen trees for people to buy, take home, and decorate. There is a little history here. Decorated trees were used in winter celebrations long before the advent of Christianity. Plants and trees that were green all year had a special significance for people who lived in cold climates. Ancient people hung evergreen boughs over their doors and windows.

Some believed that evergreens kept witches, ghosts, evil spirits, and illness away.

Romans decorated evergreen trees with trinkets and topped them with an image of their sun god. Druid sorcerers hung golden apples and lit candles on oak trees to celebrate the winter solstice.

Christians’ Christmas celebrations began using evergreens as a symbol about 400 years ago in Germany. This practice spread to most of northern Europe by the 19th century. Obviously, this Christian practice spread to North America. Selling Christmas trees is a great money-making project for many churches and other organizations. Decorations are sometimes hand-made. . . many are family heirlooms and have special meaning. The addition of lights is not only accepted but expected. The tree has also become the manger for presents that will be distributed on Christmas day. . . Santa Claus’s favorite depository. Some of us test our imagination by decorating a “fake” tree. . . but it works well. May we all continue to enjoy seeing the beauty of a decorated evergreen at Christmas time! ~Dottie Moser, Resident

RESIDENT COUNCIL ELECTION INFORMATION

Due to the pandemic, election rules have changed this year. Official ballots will be in your box at the Reception Desk by Sunday, December 6. Election of officers

Our meetings have traditionally been held at a CCRC near Richmond. We hope that by going virtual more members will be able to attend.

Non-VaCCRA members are welcome to attend and consider joining the only Virginia organization advocating for residents of life plan communities. GHBC residents helped found this organization, and GHBC remains the state's largest chapter.

Contact Claudia Blake ([email protected]) for a link to the meeting.

GREEN BAGS…PLASTIC BAGS…WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?

NONE of these bags can be recycled.

The green bags in which our meals arrive are unusual, as they are made of plant-based materials; like plants, they will disintegrate and turn into compost. Please dispose of them in the composting receptacles outside the Market Place, containing your food scraps or empty. It’s also okay to use them for collecting kitchen garbage. Just don’t recycle them!

Other bags from stores, etc. are plastic. Use them for collecting kitchen garbage or take them to the collection box just inside the Giant. They are so flimsy and light-weight that they get tangled in the machinery at recycling facilities, so they cannot be recycled either. Thank you. ~Green Team

Virtual Tete-a-Tete with Robin, Alison, and Chef Nina Robin Norman, Alison Leggett, and Chef Nina began hosting an hour-long informal chat. So, whether you have specific questions or comments that you would like to share with the Three Stars of Dining Service, or if you would just like to chat with a familiar friend, please email Alison at [email protected] and she will send you a Zoom invite.

CHAPLAINCY UPDATES

HAVE TROUBLE WITH WEARING BOTH A HEARING AID AND A MASK?

Well, maybe you need a monkey! Remember the old Barrel of Monkeys Game?! Theresa Brion has purchased a barrel of ten plastic monkeys for connecting masks at the back of your head. She will make available a monkey to each of the first ten people to contact her.

LIVING ADVENT CALENDAR:

Ever heard of a "living Advent calendar"? In the past, Chaplain Theresa has offered radio-broadcast Advent calendar messages and participated in living nativity scenes, but she wants to share something perfect for these times, because you can participate safely from the warm comfort of your home! Each day of Advent (November 29 to December 24), you can enjoy a 3-minute Advent calendar video by amateur writers and actors from across the Havant (UK) area, with biblical characters and written scripts that make the Advent story come to life. A new video will be unveiled each day. The Living Advent Calendar videos will be on YouTube (search for living advent calendar or click on www.youtube.com/channel/UC0I-IVtK9Pc-tmJYh4gXefg), as well as the Havant Passion Play website (www.havantpassionplay.org.uk) and Facebook (search for Havant Passion Play).

LECTIONARY PAGES:

Beginning with Advent, the lectionary sheets for the Sunday Chapel Sunday services will be placed in the Chapel (rather than the Mail Room) on Saturday and Sunday mornings for those interested in having copies. If you are unable to walk to the Chapel and need another means of “delivery,” please contact Bob Riley at Ext. 7428 so he can arrange an alternate method of delivery. Thanks.

STAFF SPOTLIGHT

MISS CONGREGATIONAL AND CHURCH CHORAL SINGING? Do you miss singing in church or with a church choir? Rev. Paul Moberly, Associate Rector, St. Alban’s Episcopal Church (Annandale), invites you to become part of the St. Alban’s virtual choir. Rev. Moberly records the organ separately and sends out the organ mp3s to whomever wishes to sing. People listen to the hymn on their tablets with headphones and then record only their voices to their phone or other device. They then send the voice track back to Moberly, who mixes it together for an audio-only hymn for their services. If interested in participating, let Theresa Brion ([email protected] or Ext. 7224) know (along with your email and phone information) and she will share your interest with Rev. Moberly.

MISS THE SPIRITUALITY AND HUMANITY SERIES ON ZOOM

OR THE TELEVISION BROADCASTS? OR WANT TO VIEW AGAIN?

Let Theresa Brion (Ext. 7224 or [email protected]) know if you wish the web links to either program in the series. We had to cut short the lively discussion at the second presentation as we approached two hours! Lots of good discussion as we looked at cosmic justice, humanity, meditation and even comparative religion. Several have asked Theresa for the links, so just a reminder that she is glad to provide them. Just let her know.

Huen Tam Nguyen, or Tam as everyone calls her, is the Catering Coordinator here at GHBC. If you have attended a catered event, you have likely seen Tam serving but what you may not know is that she is also responsible for arranging and setting up the service and for making sure that all goes well. She also delivers food to all floors except the 2nd and 3rd, serves employee lunches, serves the hot drinks at Morning Joe, and even works in the kitchen. All of this is done with a smile.

Tam was born in Saigon, Vietnam. She also lived in Hue, which is in central Vietnam, where her father worked at the Hoi An post. He was a general in the South Vietnamese Army and worked with the United States military. In 1975, when the war almost reached its peak, the U.S. military allowed him to go to America to keep him safe, but he would have had to leave his pregnant wife and seven children behind. Before the plane could take off, he jumped off and was immediately arrested by the Viet Cong and spent the next 10 years in prison. The rest of the family moved to the countryside of Bien Hoa and stayed until 1992, when the U.S. government allowed the entire family to emmigrate to America. Tam had attended college in Viet Nam, with plans to study elementary education, but continuing her

education was not possible here.

After arriving in the United States Tam quickly got a job making men’s ties but left because she did not enjoy the work. In 1995, she began working at Goodwin House and has done almost every dining services job since. She said she particularly likes the work of setting up parties but is happy to do any task assigned to her. During the time she has worked here she has had two children, both of whom attend George Mason University. Her son has aspirations to become a detective, and her daughter is studying marketing.

Tam says she is comfortable working here because she feels welcomed by the residents and by her co-workers. Fortunately for us, she has no plans of retiring any time soon.

Our stories should be collected. If you are willing to share where you were, and what you remember, please sign up on the list in the Resident Business Center.

Watch West Winds next week for further details of where and how we will do this. If you have questions, please contact Margaret Sullivan at Ext. 7612.
