REMEMBRANCE DAY CELEBRATION
Each year Goodwin House Bailey’s Crossroads and Goodwin House Hospice join together to honor the
wonderful people with whom we have had the privilege to serve. We invite you to come and celebrate the
lives of all of our residents who have died during the past year at our Remembrance Day Celebration on
Thursday, November 10, at 3:00 p.m. in the Goodwin House Bailey’s Crossroads auditorium. Please mark
your calendars.
In addition, if residents or staff have experienced the death of an immediate family member, you are
invited to include that person as well. Your family member’s name and photo will be included, and a
flower will be presented to you in memory. To submit the name of a family member, please contact
Kathleen Buday, Hospice Social Worker by Tuesday, November 1. If you would like a photo to be added
to the presentation you may email it in .jpg format to Kathleen at [email protected]. The
deadline for all submissions is Monday, October 31. Thank you for helping us to celebrate the lives of our
very special residents.
NEW RESIDENT SPOTLIGHT
Paula and Todd Endo moved into apartment 720 in the Crossroads on
Thursday, September 29. Both were born in California but spent their toddler years
in Japanese internment camps until World War II ended.
Paula’s family was interned in Utah but then returned to California where
she graduated from Lowell High School in 1956. She attended Cal
Berkeley and graduated from UCLA in 1961. She then attended Harvard
Graduate School of Education focusing on photo and film making. She
taught commercial photography at the Arlington Career Center from 1974
to 1990. She also taught at the American University in Cairo from 1991 to
1993. Here in the Bailey’s Crossroads area she founded an after-school
photography project for teens, which resulted in a book “Portraits from the
Pike”. She also founded the Arlington Documentary Project and
The Columbia Pike Documentary Project.
Todd’s family was sent to Arkansas during the war but ultimately settled in
DC and graduated from Wheaton High School in 1959. He then attended
Oberlin College, graduating in 1963. He went on for an MA from Stanford
and an EdD from Harvard. Todd has worked in a variety of educational
leadership positions in Cairo, Prince George’s County and Fairfax County. In
Arlington County he helped develop and obtain the funding for the ESOL/
Bilingual program. He also worked at George Mason University creating
educational partnerships and at the Institute for Educational
Transformation. Paula reports that his longest “job” has been 16 years as a
youth soccer coach with the Arlington Soccer League. Todd has been
involved in civil rights activism including the Selma voting rights marches in 1965.
Both Paula and Todd continue to be passionate about community activism
and volunteering in the community.

Ancient history, modern science and politics all come together as
Eastern and Western cultures collide. Liev Schreiber narrates this
"Nova" program. Tuesday, October 11, at 2:00 p.m. in the Media
Room. NR 60 minutes, 2007.

COMMUNITY CORNER
Have you ever been curious about what is in the picture frame on the wall, to your left, as you
leave the main entrance? I’ll bet you thought it was a bug and wondered why it was given
such a place of honor. Well folks, it’s a “Walking Leaf”! That’s right, a Walking Leaf!
The Walking Leaf is almost impossible to spot as it feeds on Guava trees in the Malaysian highlands. It
remains motionless unless there is enough wind to move the surrounding leaves. The much smaller males
can fly giving them an extra line of defense, but the female’s only defense is to remain undetected.
Many specimens have varying amounts of “decay spots” to resemble an insect-damaged or diseased leaf.
Hence, no two are alike. This is the largest species of walking leaf at about four and one half inches.
Each Pheromone piece is designed by artist Christopher Marley to create a singular union of an exceptional
organic artifact, crisp, elegant aesthetic. Preserved computations on archival materials are hermetically
sealed to last a lifetime. How about that!!! Living at GHBC is an educational experience!
Dottie Moser, Resident
