structures – key for the planning of viableconstruction routes. “Eureka modellingand analysis tools allow us to investigatecritical aspects in relation to the conditionsunderground and structures to be erected,”saidMarin Griguta, Director CivilWorks,QIRP Department at Qatar Rail. ‘We bringin CAD data, GIS (.shp) files, referencedand unreferenced images, borehole logs, downhole geophysics and recent seismic datato model within Eureka,’ added Griguta.www.maptek.com

RAZOR SECURE CEO WARNSTRANSPORT COMPANIES OFMORE CYBER THREATSFollowing the recent ‘cyber-jacking’of theSan FranciscoMunicipal TransportationAgency (Muni), Alex Cowan, the CEO oftransport cyber defence experts RazorSecure, has warned rail, aviation andcar manufacturers and operators thatmany more attacks on their distributedIT assets and networks will happen inthe coming new year. TheMuni hackerswere able to use crypto-locker softwareto disable parts of their infrastructure, leaving the company unable to chargepassengers for their journeys. But thefinancial costs may not stop there asthe hackers also demanded a ransomto release the systems back to thecompany. It’s unclear how the hackersaccessed theMuni network but theunlikely access points will becomemore relevant as more devices becomeconnected and the Internet of Thingsexpands. The proliferation of accesspoints to ever bigger networks presentsa huge challenge for those tasked withprotecting our transport grids.www.razorsecure.com

PUTTING AN END TO LASERATTACKS ON PLANESSince 2009 over 10,000 aircraft in the UKalone have been targeted by hand heldlasers. The reckless targeting of aircraftposes a significant and growing threatto aviation safety. However it is oftendifficult to obtain evidence to secure aconviction and existing laser detectionequipment is very expensive. Scientistsat the Defence Science andTechnologyLaboratory (Dstl) have developed aninnovative app that analyses laser dazzleevents, making it quicker and easierfor the police to arrest and prosecuteoffenders, deter the targeting of aircraftand allow pilots to take steps to preventthemselves from being dazzled. TheLaser Event Recorder app (LERapp)has been developed using an iPhone. It utilises the inbuilt camera, GPS andconnectivity to record, analyse andcommunicate details of the incident.LERapp could also be used for non-aviation users including car drivers andpolice officers.www.dstl.gov.uk

DIGITALGLOBE RELEASES FIRST IMAGE FROM WORLDVIEW-4SATELLITE

INTELLIGENT VISION TECHNOLOGIES FOR AVIATION SAFETY& SECURITY

AIT Austrian Institute of Technologyand Diamond Aircraft Industries GmbHhave developed an intelligent sensorsystem enabling aircraft to detect and avoidpotential obstacles both in the air and onthe ground. Collision avoidance systems area key technology for future unmanned aerialsystems and advanced air traffic services. The objective is to increase the safety ofmanned and future unmanned aviationby detecting possible collisions with bothcooperative and non-cooperative obstacles, and performing avoidance maneuvers asa last resort to avoid collisions. Obstacleavoidance is the key technology in missionsinvolving the highest possible degree of

autonomy, e.g. for generating situation mapsfor crisis and disaster management. DiamondAircraft has used the test results to assesspotential applications for this technology asan innovative and effective safety-improvingfeature both for unmanned flying objects andmanned aviation.www.ait.ac.atwww.diamond-air.at
