Saturday 7th DecemberA Magical Westbourne Christmas

We had a chat with Jackie from the Westbourne Traders Association to nd out about this year’s Christmas event.

Jackie said, “Last year’s event was a great success and brought a lot of people into Westbourne. We hope that this year will be equally successful. Once again there will be a Farmers Market in Landseer Road - a very popular addition to Westbourne last year. There are also going to be two live performance areas. One outside Marks and Spencer and one outside SO furniture. In these areas there will be a variety of acts from singers, magicians, illusionists, The Salvation Army band and much more. We will also have stilt walkers and street entertainers.”

Santa will be visiting his Grotto in the Arcade, accompanied by his elves (helped by Westbourne Rotary Club) along with a fantastic balloon modeller. Robert in Trebles Butchers will be holding a sausage eating competition, along with free tastings.

Fire Radio will be helping switch on the Westbourne Christmas lights at 4pm outside M&S to bring the day to an end.

Westbourne is the ideal shopping destination at Christmas, with so many unique and individual shops you’ll have no trouble nding the perfect gifts for loved ones.

We met up for a coee with Teresa and Zak, a mother and son team, who recently took over The Living Room in Alum Chine.

Situated on Alumhurst Road, just a ten minute walk from Westbourne, The Living Room is an award winning independent bed and breakfast and coee lounge, open to non-residents for tasty brunches, lunches or just one of their amazing coees. Winners of Bournemouth Tourism Guest Accommodation of the Year, AA Breakfast Award and Trip Advisor Certicate of Excellence, The Living Room already has a loyal local following but remains somewhat one of Westbourne’s hidden gems.

You will nd comfy couches, free Wi-Fi, a big front garden and an open replace you can curl up in front of. The menu is an inspired and eclectic selection of dishes, daily specials and take-aways. Zak told us more about the homemade fare, “We make delicious full cooked breakfast options from the classic to the more unusual. Why not try our

Green Eggs & Jam, Pulled Pork Melt, Ham Hock Hash or homemade granola. We also have plenty of tasty vegetarian or gluten free options. Our infamous home cooked chilli jam is something people come back for alone!”

Coee geeks take note, at The Living Room your Cup of Joe is freshly ground and hand pulled, sourced from the exclusive Somerset based coee roasting company Martin Carwardine & Co. The blend is Fairtrade and organic and The Living Room is the only stockist in the area.

Living Room Private Hire

The Living Room is available to hire for catered private meetings or social gatherings and an ideal space for small work conferences or workshops. Local social groups are invited to reserve the space for free, subject to availability. The Living Room B&B is also perfect for private parties or gatherings as well as individual rooms.

I was probably not the only one to feel a little down as this years amazing summer drew to a close. This year brought the warmest summer for years, AFC Bournemouth winning promotion to the almighty championship, Rolling Stones and Arctic Monkeys storming Glastonbury and a full range of brilliant sun kissed activities to the town of Bournemouth. However there is no reason to be down because for music the fun has only just started as we approach Christmas and New Year.

Christmas for gigs and music is traditionally one of the best periods of the year and in Westbourne it is really hotting up to be an exciting festive period. The Winchester is a venue that continues to move forward and I truly recommend it for any night of the week because it always oers some great entertainment from music of all genres to comedy and poetry.

One of the highlights of the month for me is on 19 November featuring Ruarri Joseph performing at the Winchester. He has been all over the country and has been described as one of the best songwriters in the UK. The NME describe him as Bob Dylan had he grown up in Cornwall. To see him play at such an intimate venue then should not be missed as he looks to be one of the key stars of 2014.

If you’re stuck for ideas for Christmas presents, a fantastic record store has opened not far from Westbourne in St Michaels Road. Flat 13 Records is an absolute delight if you love CDs, books and vinyl. They stock old and new vinyl and have some real rarities in there. The sta who run the shop are honest, knowledgeable and dedicated and they are really worth paying a visit. They aim to expand the store soon and start introducing live music so watches this space!

Sadly my last word is a reective one on the closure of the Centre Stage in Westbourne. This follows hotly on the heels of Champions closing down just six months before. Both were fantastic venues and so important for grass roots musicians and comedians. This is why it is so important to support grass roots venues but more importantly you will never be disappointed because the talent on display is so good.

I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a happy new year and look forward to seeing you all soon - you’re invited to my next performance at The Grove Tavern in Southbourne on the 2nd December.

Many thanks to local resident Colin Wildman for his poem that just about sums up Westbourne perfectly. What better way to end the last edition of the year than with a reminder of how lucky we are to live, work or visit this corner of Bournemouth!

It’s a corner of Bournemouth, before you enter PooleWell served by buses, one a minute as a ruleMobility friendly, no steps or hills to climbIt’s difficult to imagine where else to spend my time

It’s rather like a village, in the Cotswolds or DevonBut ladies, I tell you this is shopping heaven!Everywhere is cared for, and you’ll find lots of seatingIf you’re done with shopping, you’re spoilt for choice for eating

With coffee shops and tearooms, and cakes a specialityAnd every kind of restaurant of every nationalityYou can buy anything in Westbourne, not just foodIf you’re so inclined you can even be tattooed

The many independent shops make it really very pleasantSo you’ll never fail to find that very special presentThere are ten shops for ladies, bursting with fashionAnd sixteen others, if pampering is your passion

From vintage wear to swimwear and everything besidesAnd jewellers and gowns for all the lucky bridesFrom a second-hand guitar to interior designOr a mask, for to you look like Frankenstein

An exquisite work of art, a snazzy pair of shoesRead the latest books, go and book a cruiseThere's more variety in Westbourne than anywhere elsePlus a little Tesco, but every little helps

It’s proud of its heritage, and the quaint arcadeAnd the lovely garden where a famous author stayedIt has to be the best and unique Bournemouth cornerAnd I am proud to call myself … a Westbourner!

Ode to Westbourneby Colin Wildman
