Thereis also a certain amount of regional variation.The most culturally conservative part of theregion regarding the place of women in so-ciety is probably Kosovo, followed by theMuslim areas of Macedonia and Serbia, andthen Albania and Bosnia. Women travellingwith a male companion in these regionsmight find that a mysterious cloak of in-

visibility descends around them. People willaddress your companion and seemingly notacknowledge you this isnt out of rudenessbut out of a rather quaint code of respectand politeness. It is not necessary to weara headscarf anywhere besides a mosque orMuslim shrine.

These regions dont have the heavymale drinking culture that prevails in non-Muslim parts of the region, which cutsdown on the blindly enthusiastic suitors.Of course, theres also a huge difference

between urban and rural attitudes towardsfemale travellers. Bars and restaurants witha regular foreign clientele in Prishtina arequite used to solo women customers, butdropping into a men-only caf in the back-woods of Serbia may well bring some dis-approving stares. In rural areas it pays tofollow local customs such as sitting nextto another woman on buses, minivans andtrains, and sitting closer to the front than tothe back. Hopefully the more women thattravel, whether alone, in pairs or in groups,the less unwanted attention lone femaletravellers in the region will attract.

Despite feminisms advances in manycountries in the region, women remainunderrepresented in positions of power, inboth governmental and corporate spheres.At the risk of generalising, women inthe Western Balkans still prefer to wieldinfluence rather than the levers of powerthemselves.

SEXUAL HEALTHEmergency contraception is most effectiveif taken within 24 hours after unprotectedsex. Safe condoms are available throughoutthe region.
