WESTHOPE COLLEGE COURSES 2015

Our brochure for January to June 2015 reflects Anne Dyer’s commitment to offering high quality craft courses which are accessible to all.

Our focus, always, is on providing the very best experience for our students and visitors.

We pride ourselves on the quality and variety of courses that we offer, the warmth of our welcome and our high standards of customer care. Our tutors are talented and inspirational and our course fees are very competitive (materials are included unless otherwise stated).

We have exciting plans to extend our drop-in provision and this brochure sees the introduction of Tuesday drop-in sewing days. We have responded to your requests for more courses at weekends and for half-day workshops.

We hope that you will find something in this brochure to inspire you. From drop-in days to City and Guilds courses, there really is something for everyone at Westhope.

If you have ever wondered why one artwork sings whilst another looks just ordinary, the answer is in black and white! ‘Notan’ is a Japanese word used to describe the balance of light and shade in a painting. TUTOR: VICKI NORMANA graduate in Fine Art with Printmaking, Vicki now works exclusively as a professional artist. Her paintings have been exhibited in galleries throughout the UK and Ireland and belong to private collections in Europe, Africa and the USA. Working primarily in oils, her contemporary impressionist paintings explore the play of light and colour through the application of traditional skills and principles.Vicki’s teaching is clearly focussed on skill based learning. She believes in the importance of giving learners a transferable set of skills and techniques that will allow them to paint in any style or genre they choose.

This workshop will explore different materials used in the coiling technique. Construction is similar to a coiled clay pot and involves stitching a continuous length of material. Pine needles or linen sash cord are good to start with. There will be a charge for materials.

This workshop will involve a technique similar to torchon lace but in 3D form. You will work in wire, Salt rush or Japanese shifu paper. There will be a charge for materials.

Averil Otiv is a botanist by training and has been interested in growing her own plant materials for basketry and dyeing for over 20 years.

She teaches at her home studio and gives talks and demonstrations throughout the UK and in Europe. She also exhibits with the Braid Society and the Basketmakers’ Association.

Averil will be running City and Guilds basketry courses at Westhope from October 2015.

Learn to copper foil glass - a technique developed for use in lampshades and other intricate work - and make a wind chime or light catcher to brighten a window.

Spend a day building a house! Slab building techniques will be used to create a ceramic house form which you will embellish both by removing clay (to create ‘windows’ for candlelight) and by the addition of clay and stamp work decoration. This multi-section binding is particularly suitable if you require a book to lie flat, when open, for drawing, writing or painting. Papers of different weights and textures can be used in conjunction with each other in the same book, including tissues or handmade papers, giving a rich tapestry of surfaces on which to work. There will be a charge for materials.

This workshop will offer an introduction to a range of techniques for laying gold leaf, imitation gold and other metals such as copper, aluminium and rather stunning variegated gold leaf. Please note that this is not for gilding furniture or frames. There will be a charge for materials.

Josie Brown HSDAD, Cert Ed., MIfL, is a professional calligrapher and heraldic artist, carrying out commissions for the private, academic and military sectors.

She enjoys taking natural materials together with ancient techniques and using them in a contemporary manner.

She also has a particular passion for gilding using historic and modern, Western and Middle Eastern methods.

Collagraph is a loose term meaning a print made from a collage. On this two day workshop you will experiment with a variety of materials to stick to a printing plate which is then sealed before being used to make prints. Many materials can be used to make the printing plate and a wide range of effects can be achieved.

City & Guilds courses have been taught at Westhope College for over 30 years by qualified and inspirational tutors.

There are no entry requirements and no previous experience is necessary.

City & Guilds Levels 2 and 3 courses in Basketry, Embroidery (Hand or Machine), Feltmaking, Floristy and Jewellery are now being planned for the year

commencing October 2015.

Each qualification comprises craft, design and research units. Students will develop skills and techniques to design and create individual and unique pieces of work.

Courses will run on one weekend each month from October and will culminate in an exhibition of students’ work in July 2016. We can offer accommodation to students who wish to stay in college during their course. Course fees may be paid in full in advance or in 10 monthly instalments by direct debit.
