WORSHIP & MINISTRY

THE LORD’S DAYMarch 8, 2020

Bible Direction for Life

WELCOME TO WESTSIDEWestside Baptist Church is a place where everyday people, just like yourself, can experience God’s love in a real and personal way. We are founded on the Bible and committed to sharing the timeless truths contained in its pages. Through straight-forward preaching from God’s Word, reverent worship, and fervent prayer, lives are impacted and inspired for spiritual growth every week here at Westside.

We hope you feel at home. Whatever your ethnic or cultural background, whether you are single or married, young or just young at heart, we would love to learn more about you and help you find your joy and satisfaction in Jesus Christ.

If you are looking for a gospel-centered church on the Kitsap Peninsula, or if we could serve you in any way, please let us know.

TOGETHER IN SCRIPTURE Numbers 23–24

Observation (23:22): The Hebrew word here and elsewhere translated as “unicorn” in the KJV almost certainly refers to a sort of wild ox, which, as explicitly noted in Deuteronomy 33:17, had multiple horns. The KJV translation seems to go back to a mistaken notion of the ancient Greek and Latin translators of the Old Testament that a rhinoceros was intended. Neither Moses nor the KJV translators had in mind the flower-covered one-horned horses that first come to mind in our own day—the imagery is rather intended to convey strength and majesty.

Observation (24:17): The association of the rise of a star with the coming of a scepter finds a striking parallel in the wise men who knew that a king had been born when they saw his star.

Application (24:11): As we find in Numbers 31:8 and 31:16, despite the wonderful prophecies he was entrusted with, Balaam went on to counsel Balak to cause the children of Israel to fall into immorality and idolatry. By his continued efforts to see Israel cursed, Balaam demonstrated that he believed Balak’s lie that the Lord was holding him back from living his best life now, the same lie that caused our first parents to plunge humanity into rebellion against their Creator. In the end, Balaam’s efforts would lead, not to great honor, but rather to a violent death. How might we be tempted to believe the lie that faithfulness to the Lord is holding us back from success?

MARK 15:21–47 Application (15:29–32):

Those who crucified our Savior treated him as a madman, one whose words and beliefs were unacceptable in polite society, worthy only of scorn and mockery. How might we be tempted to betray our Savior by compromising the clear teachings of Scripture in order to avoid a taste of the societal disgrace he so willingly bore for us?
