Wetherby Fencing Club End of Term Tournament – 10am-4pm

From the Headmaster

Dear Parents, What a night that was on Tuesday! The Pioneer Hall for Candlelit Dinner looked so magical and our incredibly creative PTA team outdid themselves yet again. I am, admittedly, hopeless at these sorts of things – I just don’t have the vision for interior design and have no concept of what colours go with others. I’m blaming it on being a bit colour blind, so am entirely reliant on Lisa Giles and her fantastic team of mums to make our events so special. Thank you to everyone who helped on Tuesday and, of course, to Mr Brawn and Miss Orpwood; what a formidable partnership they have built over the course of only a term.

Birthday Books

It was Maxwell B’s birthday over Half Term and he has donated a copy of ‘The Martian’ for the library. Thank you and Happy Birthday Maxwell!

Our PTA exists to promote the community of our School and also to raise money for our charities. We are fortunate this term to have one of our parents, Mr Abbas Jafarian (Alejandro 8F), who is going the extra mile, well 60 to be exact, by trekking to the South Pole to raise money for our school charities. This will be some achievement and he is taking a Wetherby Prep flag to wave, once he gets to the Pole. We wish Abbas well and encourage all parents, staff and boys to get behind him on his adventure. Next week, I will send a link to our Virgin Giving page, where you can track his progress and sponsor him. We wish Abbas all the best. If he can send me a picture of him waving the Wetherby Flag, I have promised him a Gold HMGS, upon his return!

Then you will see, in an attachment to this Wetherbuzz, news of an event that could test this 'unathletic' Headmaster to the limit. Mr Lock will be leading a WPS PTA London to Paris Bike Ride next summer term and when he asked me to imagine a whole group of Wetherby staff and parents, all in Wetherby lycra, cycling en masse in a Wetherby peloton into Paris underneath the Eiffel Tower, I was sold. The furthest I’ve ever cycled was with Mr Morrison, when a group of us cycled from London to Cambridge about ten years ago. Apart from needing to push up the hill in Royston, it wasn’t too bad but London to Paris will definitely rank as my best sporting achievement. I do hope as many of you as possible will join us. We will be riding from the Church of the Annunciation on Friday 29th June to start our journey, with the cheers of the boys resounding in our ears. It makes the hairs stand up on my neck just thinking about it. Can’t wait… Have a good weekend,

Holiday Clubs Next week, we will be sending home a letter regarding Holiday Clubs for this Christmas and all going forward. Be assured though, we will be running Holiday Club from Thursday 14th to Friday 22nd December with the programme containing a range of activities.

Wetherbuzz Week 11

Year 8 Scholars Class —8V

This week’s Sportsman of the Week is Yousif Al-Saffar in 4M. Any boy capable of scoring 7 goals in a single match against Caldicott has a great footballing future ahead of him. Despite putting the ball in the net so frequently, it was great to see Yousif leave the pitch in his usual modest manner. Well done, Yousif!

Miss Phoenix’s Year 3 Class—3P

This week’s Citizen of the Week is Sebastian D in 6L. Always smiling and cheery, Sebastian is a model Wetherby citizen. When Mr Baker is taking parents on a tour, Sebastian can always be relied upon to explain exactly what he is doing in class and, in so doing, creates such a positive impres-sion. Well done, Sebastian!

This week’s Sportsman of the Week is Jonathan C in 6T. At this week’s London League qualifiers at Latymer, Jonathan really showed his mettle, al-most leading the Swimming Team in terms of his positive attitude, support for others and general spirit; these are true sporting qualities. Well done, Jonathan!

Wetherbuzz Week 11

From School Council—Tuesday 21st November

School Council write…

Attendance: School Council Representatives, PLT, Chef Peter and Tony from IMS of Smithfield (Butcher)

Issues/Ideas brought up during meeting and action plan:

Wetherby Burger – This meeting was dedicated to the ‘Wetherby Burger’. School Council have entered a competition to find

the most creative and exciting burger which will be brought to our menus this term. School Council were very fortunate to

have Tony from IMS of Smithfield attend the meeting and explain where the meat that is supplied to Wetherby comes from.

Tony spoke about the history and origins of the ‘hamburger’ as well as his experiences as a butcher at Smithfield; the largest

meat market in the UK. He then asked the boys to design and create a ‘Wetherby Burger’ thinking carefully about the ingredi-

ents on the sheet. From some of the schools that he has visited, there were some creative choices such as chicken burger

with pineapple and bacon!

Chef Peter cooked up some beef burgers as well as lamb and mint burgers to taste which went down a storm with the boys.

The boys were then given a sheet to write down their suggestions for a ‘Wetherby Burger’ and there was some interesting

ingredient combinations including one boy who suggested ice cream and tabasco with his beef burger as well as adding cre-

ating a French burger with his beef burger and croissant!

It is going to be a tough competition to judge but Chef Peter is going to choose the best three burgers and will then cook

these up next week for School Council to vote on. Tony will then be contacted and the winning burger will be added to the

school menu.

Many thanks to Chef Peter for organising such a fun visit and we look forward to next week’s tasting and the possibility of

having a ‘Wetherby Sausage’ tasting next term.

The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday 28th November at 8:30am in the Dining Room.

Wetherbuzz Week 11

From the Senior Mistress—Manners

Miss Olney writes…

Whenever I catch the tube from Baker Street, I always see a large sign on the downwards escalators alerting commuters to

‘slow down’ and ‘don’t rush’. As such, the manners focus this week has been on slowing down inside the building as we some-

times see boys hurtling down the stairs. Whilst some have listened to this advice, the majority still are rushing from lesson to

lesson and we feel this needs more practice this week. Also being more aware of pedestrians, especially at home time has not

been as good as it can be so as staff, we’d really like the boys to focus on this more next week.

There are not many weeks left until the end of term and the prize for improvement in manners is a brilliant one (this will be

revealed in the final assembly). And even though general manners have improved in the building, outside the building there

needs to be a lot more work…Keep working hard on this the next couple of weeks, boys…

Finally, I just wanted to end with some excellent examples of boys whose manners have really impressed staff this week:

Harry Lund (4B) - the other day I was walking (slowly) up the stairs from the basement to the top floor and rather

than pushing past Harry Lund asked very politely if he could overtake me. (Miss Sharp)

Milo Pettit (8B) - I know it is not related to this week’s challenge but on approach to the corridor towards 6L two Y8 boys were

coming in the opposite direction. They were two abreast but instinctively and in good time Milo Petit moved behind the other

boy foreseeing that he needed to make room for oncoming traffic – me. It was a lesson in forethought and I was duly im-

pressed. (Miss Balgobin)

Oliver Bush (6M) - Oliver Bush is always extremely well-mannered and polite. He is such a lovely boy to teach – always tries

his absolute best and is such a pleasure to have in the classroom. (Mrs Le Clanche)

Kerem Berk (5K) - On another note, could I mention Kerem Berk in 5K for his manners. He is unfailingly well -mannered and

will always acknowledge me around school. Despite only teaching him for half an hour a week this year and no longer having

the pleasure of teaching him French, I still feel he is a real standout with his impeccable manners. (Miss Taylor)

The Great ‘Wetherburger’ Tasting session….

Wetherbuzz Week 11

From the English Department—David Walliams

Mr Thorne writes…

On Monday, the school welcomed one of Britain’s most popular children’s authors, David Walliams. With an enigmatic energy in the air, the assembly flew by as we listened intently to excerpts from David’s latest masterpiece, Bad Dad. In equal measure, the boys lavishly regaled David with comments, anecdotes and questions about books, becoming a writer and Britain’s Got Talent. A distinctly dazzling display of David’s devilish reading from his back catalogue capped off the impromptu event; a true treat for the Lower School boys! Special mention must go to the Bjorgolfsson family for providing the boys with this memora-ble morning!

From the Poetry Corner – Competition winner

The theme for next week is 'The Countdown to Christmas!' Please place your cracking creations in Miss Baillieu's blue box by Thursday 30th December.

Frozen Earth

The frozen earth is a desert of life.

Fern trees blossom, covered in snow.

A crystallised snowflake so sharp

Yet so thin and small; all this created by snow.

Snow, the white powdery void,

Created by the endless flakes rolling

Out of inexorable clouds

Black in the day.

Then on the ground,

It sloshes under foot after every

Slow, monotonous step.

As you repeatedly swing your feet.

A picturesque scene.

White covered, arctic blue lakes,

The burning frost as you touch it.

The snow as white as a mind blank.

Wetherbuzz Week 11

From the Science Department—Golden Microscope Challenge

Miss Sharp writes…

This week Year 4 have been investigating Alexander Graham Bell's most used invention, the telephone. The boys investigated a range of materials and different lengths of string to create a telephone which carried the best sound. This week's Golden Mi-croscope winners, for fantastic pair work and accurate measuring are Benett H and Elias D in 4L and Casper M and Charles P in 4B.

Wetherbuzz Week 11

From the Music Department—Another busy week...

Miss Orpwood writes…

We have had another busy week in the music department! Firstly, a huge well done to all the boys who sang at the Candlelit Dinner. It really was a magical event. Secondly, a huge well done to all the boys who performed at our second Breakfast Con-cert, there were some very musical performances and we could really tell that the boys had been practising hard at home. We have lots of events coming up and rehearsals are going well; the boys are going to be very busy over the next couple of weeks! I am very excited to experience my first Christmas at Wetherby. One of these events will be a concert for the Blind Veterans which will be taking place on Tuesday 5th December. This will be for the Chamber Choir and everybody is more than welcome to come and watch. Details about reduced tickets for Wetherby parents can be found on the poster attached to the Wetherbuzz email.

Please see the document attached to the Wetherbuzz email outlining our proposed London to Paris bike ride. It is a little under 300km of cycling leaving from Marble Arch on Friday, 29nd June 2018, arriving in Paris on Saturday evening. From the Drama Department—Nativity

Miss Waters writes… Time has flown by and it is already time for the long awaited

Please come and watch - there will be mulled wine and mince pies so please arrive in good time to enjoy!

Scripts, Songs & Dances Thank you for all of your help with nativity costumes and learning lines! If you have any concerns about either of these please let me know. If you could help the boys run their lines over this weekend and encourage them to practise their songs and dances that would be brilliant.

We are looking for a few extra props for the school nativity It would be super if you happen to have any of the following and are willing to kindly lend them to us for the nativity next week: - little wooden stools x 2

- a little old suitcase x 5/6

- inflatable guitar toys x 2

- baby doll x 2

I would be very grateful to hear from you if you can help with any of these. Please send me an email, [email protected]

Costume Most costumes have been handed in – thank you for being so organised. I am still waiting for the last few costumes and extras for particular costumes that have come with just a cloak for example. Please keep an eye out as I am emailing all year 3 and 4 parents with details of missing costume items and other useful nativity notes! I hope you’re as excited as I am to see the boys perform!

Thank You So Much

Wetherbuzz Week 11

Miss Taylor writes… Are you a role model to others? Do you inspire your friends family and community in a positive way? Do you try to be the best version of yourself? Have you dealt positively with a difficult experience? Do you celebrate your differences and encourage others to do the same? If any of the above apply, then this competition is definitely for you! The aim is to celebrate young male role models in society and we believe that Wetherby boys would be the perfect candidates to put their stories forward. I know that there are so many boys at Wetherby who are excellent role models, so please enter your stories and share your experiences. The top 20 entrants will be invited to an exclusive ceremony and the top five will have their stories published, as well as receive £1000 towards their preferred charity. If you would like to participate, please click on this link https://awards.beingmankind.org/. Come on boys, let’s get writing!

For boys in years 6, 7 and 8…The Young Male Role Model of the Year Competition 2017

From 7C—Zac Roda’s Birthday

Mrs Harris writes…

As part of the ongoing 7C presentations in form time, Zac kindly offered to do a cake decorating lesson for all of 7C. The boys really enjoyed it, and they all successfully decorated beautiful Christmas tree gingerbread biscuits! Zac had two enthusiastic volunteers, Luca Bengough and Nicholas Finch. Zac has worked incredibly hard this week baking and preparing so his form could all have their own decorated biscuit, and it was his Birthday on Thursday! Happy Birthday, thank you and well done Zac from all of 7C!

Wetherbuzz Week 11

Match Reports

Football

U10 vs Thomas’s Battersea

Last Thursday the U10 A-D teams wrapped up their football season with a trip to Thomas’s Battersea. This was a great way to

end a very positive season with three wins and a draw. Well done!

A team: Man of the match – Iskander Ali Hussain

B team: Man of the match – Lachlan Donley

C team: Man of the match – Sami Kymisis

D team: Man of the match – Oscar Rotman

1st XI Football Tournament

This was a fitting end to the football season at the Thomas's football tournament, Barn Elms. Having played some delightful

football and truly being very unlucky to be knocked out in the quarter finals on golden goal, the U13 boys didn't concede a goal

and scored some super goals. Well done.

Rugby

U11 A-C V Thomas’s Clapham

With the rugby season now in full swing, the U11 A-D teams travelled to Thomas’s Clapham. The boys put up a brilliant perfor-

mance winning two and narrowly losing one.

A team: Man of the match – Leonardo O’Sullivan

B team: Man of the match – Jackson Frieda

C team: Man of the match – Thompson Higgins

U11 Wellington Tournament

On Wednesday the U11A team travelled to Wellington College for the annual Wellington Rugby Festival. All boys arrived looking

forward to the start of the rugby season and testing themselves against some strong schools. Unfortunately without having had

any exposure to rugby this season the boys struggled to match the pace and intensity of other schools. Despite this the boys

gave their all and scored some good tries during the festival despite not picking up the desired wins. Plenty of lessons learned

and as a team the boys can only get stronger.

Player of the tournament – Jake Gillanders

1st team Wellington Tournament

The 1st XIII travelled to the Wellington Festival in their first competitive rugby of the season. They boys performed well against

a host of extremely strong teams from all over the country. A fine effort from an improving squad.

Player of the tournament - Zac Romeo

Golden Boot Final Standings

Zach Shuaib – 30 goals

Iskander Ali Hussain 28 goals

Yousif Al-Saffar – 25 goals

Wetherbuzz Week 11

Cross Country Championships

Mr McClinton writes…

Well done to the following boys who ran in the South of Eng-

land Schools Cross Country Championships, Sevenoaks

School, Kent. Conditions were cold and bright, ideal for this

event. All the boys can feel proud of their efforts, in particu-

lar Larz Fritz who finished 29th from a field close to 300 run-

ners, outstanding. Well done, boys!

Theodore Bischoff Nicholas Finch Sam Williams Killian James Raphael Harpel Sebastian Moscoso Larz Fritze

Rugby Week

Mr Blundell writes...

Last Friday evening, five boys from Wetherby Prep represented the Merchant Taylor’s Barbarians as part of the schools ‘Rugby

Week’. The boys all played together against an excellent Chesham Prep team and were joined by players from eight other prep

schools in the area. It was a great experience for all the boys involved and the Wetherby players showed great courage, skill

and team spirit. Although Chesham Prep won the match, the Barbarians were valiant throughout and never gave up. Well

done to Chinonso, Chinua, Charles, Lucas and Josh who were all great ambassadors for the school and the game of rugby. In

true Barbarians spirit the boys wore their school socks and shorts to show their true allegiance to the school.

Wetherbuzz Week 11

End of Football Season Assembly

Mr Reid writes…

I can’t believe it is the end of my first season of football at Wetherby Prep School and what a season it has been! Our 1st XI had

a good run in the ISFA Cup and along with some great results against Westminster Under, Sussex House and Fulham Prep. The

mighty 2nd XI led by our truly, have the best record in 2nd XI prep school football with a win percentage of 88%!

Under 12A

Mr Smith and the U12A have enjoyed a great season with many a memorable moment including wins in the Inner London Cup

against Elm Green and Rokeby. Good luck in the next round of the cup, boys!

Under 12B

The Under 12Bs have had fantastic unbeaten season and Mr Billingham has made this job look like the easiest job in Prep School Football. U11s The U11As (a.k.a. the dream team) had a great season with a number of great performances; the highlights being reaching the Royal Russell Tournament Final, the semi-finals of the ISFA Cup and winning the Kew Green Prep tournament. What an end to the season that was! The U11Bs were nicknamed ‘the comeback kings’. After a tricky start to the season, they finished the season with a great win against Arnold House. The U11Cs and Ds can proudly boast two of the best records in the school with plenty of goals scored and very few conceded. U10s The Under 10As displayed huge amount of team spirt and a great work ethic. The highlights being reaching the plate final at The Westminster Under Tournament and winning the Plate at the prestigious Dulwich Prep Tournament, great achievements. The Under 10 B team enjoyed a great season and were unbeaten in their first 5 matches. The highlight was a brilliant 8-0 win against Arnold House. The Under 10 C team were magnificent from start to finish with their highlight being a 7-0 win against Sussex House. The D team were also very impressive with a near perfect season winning all but one of their games. U9s The talented U9A team had an excellent season. Overall they finished with a record of just 3 defeats in 18 matches scoring 51

goals in the process, including a 7-1 win against Arnold House.

The U9Bs won all bar one of the matches and finished the season strongly with a win against a very strong Arnold House team.

The U9 Cs and Ds continued in this winning vein with a total of 12 wins from 14 fixtures between them. Well done to all the

boys in Year 4, the future of Wetherby Prep School Football looks very bright indeed!

U8s

The U8 As and Bs have showed a brilliant attitude and willingness to play and this was evident during matches with clear im-provement significant throughout the group. Well done, boys! Wetherby Premier League

Senior

The Wetherby Premier League has been a huge success this term. The only problems we have experienced is that when boys

have been promoted to the school teams, they haven’t wanted to leave their beloved Franchise Team!

To quote the WPS sports staff ‘Senior Franchise Football has been a pleasure to watch and coach the year’. A huge well done to

Mr Froggatt’s Vikings for an undefeated season. One of the highlights of the whole season was in the Franchise Cup when the

Spartans defeated the Storm 2 – 1.

U11 The U11 franchise did not fail to disappoint either. Every game was played like a cup final with the Pistons coming through as deserved champions.

Wetherbuzz Week 11

U10 Unofficially, dubbed the 'Gentlemen's League’, the U10 franchise produced some brilliant, competitive football, always played in the right spirit. The Pumas took the spoils, holding off the charge of the Rhinos to remain unbeaten for the league season. It was also great to see the Cowboys embrace the magic of the cup, turning the form book on its head to lift the knock out trophy. U9 The U9 Franchise Season was highly competitive and played in excellent spirits. All boys played with smiles on their faces and

some great football was on show. Mr Criddle’s mighty Wizards ended up winning the Cup with strong performances through-

out with their only loss coming to the Titans. The Franchise season finished on a high with the Franchise Teams on tour to

Arnold House where every team came away with excellent wins.
