1. Open it Up

Go to Hand-Out/Thorne/Playing Cards. Open the Blank Card Template and rename it Card Yourname.

Carefully cut out your figure using the magnetic lasso tool.

Use the move tool or press “V” to activate the move tool. Move your phototo the card template.

Use the transform tool to resize your picture to fit onto the card template.Your figure should take up the top half of the card. Later you will copy andflip the image for the bottom half of the card.

Use the Lasso tool to cut around your model’s clothing. SelectLayer Via Copy for a new clothes layer. Name your layer “clothes.”Control-Click on the clothes layer to select only the clothes. Pick a

primary color you want for your clothes and click Alt-Backspaceto fill it with your color choice.

Create a hair layer in the same way as you created your clothes layer.Name it “Hair.” Choose a primary color for your hair. Control-Click on theHair layer, then Alt-Backspace to fill the hair with a solid color.

Select Enhance>Image Adjust>Levels. Set your input levels in the Levels Drop-downpalette to 50 and 200. This will increase the contrast of your photo. Now copy your modellayer in case of art disasters. Click on the Eye icon to hide it.

Select Image>Adjustments>Threshold. Set Threshold Level to approximately 50, but youshould play with the slider to achieve the best look. Click OK.

Add a stroke around the figure to regain your sense of form. Select Edit>Stroke and apply a1 px width stroke. Tone=black and set to Outside.

Select your Magic Wand and click on the white within the Model layer. Now set your foreground

Color to white and background to whatever color you want for your model. Click on theGradient Tool icon, then drag your cursor from top to bottom.

Control click on your clothes layer to select the clothing. Add a gradient toThe clothes as you did for the skin.

Go to the Hand-Out Folder/Vector Art and select decorations for your image. You will needto use the transform tool (Control-T) to resize the artwork to fit your picture. You can

Recolor the decorations by Control-Clicking on the layer, then using the paint bucket to coloryour decorations.

Merge your layers after you are happy with your image. Use the Marquee Tool to crop and

clean up the bottom of the image. Copy the model layer hitting Contrl+J or by dragging onto thelayer icon at the bottom of the layers palette. Use Control-T (Transform) tool to turn her upsidedown and backwards.

Select the shape tool and click on All Elements. Choose your suit (hearts, diamonds, clubs,or spades. If you want to, you can add drips or embellishments. Select the Type tool and usethe Old English font to add a Q or J or K.

Copy your suit and letter layer. Use Control-T (Transform) to turn it upside down andbackwards.

Open the Banner Template from Hand-Out. Use the vector art to embellish it. Go wild! After you haveMerged your banner layers, select Edit>Stroke and apply an Inside Stroke in whatever color you like.

On the banner add the name of your suit. Use an interesting font like Portago or Stencil or somethingother than Arial or Courier.

Halftone screens create animage made up of closelyspaced rows of dots. You cancreate an edgy look around the

hair and clothing of yourmodel.

Open a new document from Hand-Out, “Hair Halftone Blank.” Drag and drop your hairlayer into the new document. Add Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur 20%.

To make a halftone you have to change your image to grayscale. SelectImage>Mode>Grayscale, then OK. Then select Image>Mode>Bitmap. You can eitherchoose Pattern Dither or Diffusion Dither. See which one you like best for your look.

You must now convert the file back to RGB. Select Image ModeGrayscale, then select RGB Color.

Click the Magic Want tool and click on the black area. Click onSelect>Similar to select all the black halftone hair.

Drag and drop your new dotted hair back into your original document.

If you like, you can add a halftone to your clothing by using the sameMethods.
