This Is What I Think

Why Arent We More Innovative?Fear of FailureIm just not creativeI dont know what we needEverything is fine in our school. We dont need to add anything newNo one asked me for anythingWe dont have the resources to do thatNo one supports me around hereEveryone in my department says we cant do it

We Make Excuses

You Should Take Baby StepsInnovation, creativity, improvements, or change consist of following steps.Focus on Process first Results follow

1. Take a Creative MindsetTake RisksTake from othersTake action with consistencyTake a look back at what you have done

Use Your 4 Cs to Create the Mindset

When you ConnectConnect with others to create unlimited boundaries for the possibility of innovation. The importance of connecting with educators and innovators from around the world is crucial Its your beginning!Connecting with others leads to collaborating with others on creativity and change.Use Social Media to drive your Connectinghttps://tackk.com/ald75r

CollaborateBuilding leaders and teacher create a culture of collaboration where everyone in the building grows and feeds off others ideas and thoughts.Innovation and collaboration go hand-in-hand to create educational opportunities for schools and communitiesConnecting and collaborating leads to becoming more confident in going through with new ideas and generating new ideas

ConfidenceHaving the confidence to take risks and try new things helps build a strong culture throughout a building and classroom.Staff and students feed off of confident people in their learning environments. How many great things come from negative people who always are looking for excuses?People who fail, but do it with confidence and persistence, are held in a higher regards than people who make excuses.Building a culture based on confidence creates a learning environment where everyone looks to try different things for the best interest of students.

CreativityCreate the environment in your school and classroomAdministrators and teachers needs to create a culture that allows learners to be innovative.Once the 3 factors above are in place, innovation and creativity will flow throughout the building.

Create the Mindset

Step 1Establish Creative CultureCreate a Creative Mindset by:Connecting with others (see what other schools are doing and find out how they did it)Collaborate with others (work with staff and students to start something new)Develop Confidence throughout the building and classroom (Confidence starts with you!)Encourage Creativity (develop committees, set out time during the day in your schedule/master schedule)Ideas? Lets hear them write them down!

2. Create the Environment to InnovateThe most important part of teaching is the classroom environment. It is the same with innovation & creativityYou need to let people believe You need to let people see change happening

Successful Environments are a HabitCreate the environment that allows others to take risksLet teachers gain PD differentlyLet students learn differentlyMake changes and improvements a habit, not a coincidence.

Step 2Create the Innovative EnvironmentCreate an environment built on Yes!Encourage people to do things differently.Do things differently yourself (change your class, change the way you do meetings AND explain why you changed)Pick 1 thing to do differently, not 5. The Creative Mindset will build the Creative EnvironmentEx) Staff meetings, formative assessmentsIdeas? Lets hear them write them down!

3. You Win With People

Your Building and ClassroomOnly hire people with the Creative MindsetNo exceptions!Acknowledge and reward your staff and students with the Creative MindsetStaff meetings, weekly newsletter, blog share their success and let EVERYONE know it is importantHave conversations with staff and students about progress and risk/reward

Relationships Matter in Creative Environments

Step 3How Will You Build Relationships?Build relationshipsFind out what staff and students really want and want to do.Get better at building relationships if youre not very good (personal notes, attend events, conversations)Expose creativity in your students and staffWhen you see them do something innovative/creative/different, share itIdeas? Lets hear them write them down!

4. Become a Victor, not a Victim

Provide Resources Anyway You CanFind a way to provide resources for your staff and students. Its not easy and not always practical, but find a way. From Computer Networking and Web Design to Engineering. From Engineering to Fab Lab.Staff and students need to know they have the freedom to ASK for resources.Dont ever forget about the COMMUNITY for resources

Step 4Provide ResourcesCreate a vision of what you want to do.Get the appropriate parties/people involvedFor example, create a Community Advisory BoardFind out what type of equipment/tools you need.Get used equipment from othersSearch/write grants, ask for donations, raise money different waysSearch the Internet for different ways to raise moneyTry to be self-sustaining to make it last and get support from district administrationIdeas? Lets hear them write them down!

5. Open Leadership

Everyone Can Lead If You Let ThemAllow your leaders to developTeachers and students can lead innovative projects. They need the culture to succeed in. Develop yourself as a flexible leader and let your staff and students embrace the culture to develop themselves

Step 5Let Them Lead!Set your staff and students up for successAllow them to lead as independent contractorsSupport them and provide them with feedbackHands off leadership focused on supportEx) Allow teachers to create their scheduleEx) Allow teachers to use different forms of assessment to show student masteryIt comes easier when there is a Creative Mindset Environment established.Ideas? Lets hear them write them down!
