What is rAge?rAge is a weekend-long exhibition dedicated to video games and technology, with a focus on hands-on experiences for the expected 30,000+ visitors. rAge 2013 is booked at the Coca-Cola Dome, Northgate Johannesburg from 4 October [Friday] – 6 October [Sunday] 2013.

This will be the 11th successful outing for this spectacular collection of the latest games and high-end gaming technology. The show is the largest and best of its kind in the country, has established the benchmark for interactive entertainment, and hosts the wholesale gathering of South Africa's thriving gaming and technology community.

rAge is managed and run by NAG magazine; essentially the expo is NAG magazine live. All the best content in each issue of the magazine is on display at the expo for one mind-blowing weekend – not only current software and

hardware, but also products only due for release in 2014. The expo allows visitors to get hands-on experience with the ground-breaking developments in this dynamic sector. rAge also plays host to international game developers who come all the way from Europe and the US to talk about their latest games with visitors to the show. rAge also features a number of behind-closed-doors games where visitors must queue to see game footage that isn’t for public consumption. All these cool features bring rAge into line with other international gaming conventions.

Based on the tremendous success of rAge 2012, rAge 2013 is primed to improve and expand on this impressive growth with a predicted conservative attendance of over 30,000 visitors. Perfectly positioned to leverage pre-Christmas sales and marketing campaigns, rAge has a lingering effect well into the December buying frenzy.

Last year’s rAge saw the highest attendance ever, with 28,930 visitors

through the door over the weekend – an 8% increase from the already staggering 29% growth of the 2011 show.

“We have never seen anything like it, the crowds were amazing,” says Michael James, senior project manager at rAge, “The growth is unbelievable. Just when we think that the show cannot get any bigger, we experience another rAge and we are completely blown away. This show celebrates and feeds South Africa’s gaming culture and without our visitors’ passion and dedication, rAge would not be the success that it is today.”

While the numbers swelled and the crowds lined up to get into the show, the social networks buzzed with excitement over last year’s show. Tweets from visitors ranged from “rAge was INSANE!!!” to “Thank you best rAge ever!!!” and “Last day of rAge 2012, be there or be a non-geek!”

Aside from the more than 40 new game titles available for visitors to experience, rAge 2012 featured a wealth of entertainment including live eSports (electronic sports) events and prize-givings for the winners of last year’s finals in a number of games, traditional board and card gaming tournaments and tutorials, cosplay demonstrations and competitions with over 100 participants flaunting their costumes, local artists and writers showing off their creations, and of course the many gamer lifestyle products like T-shirts, action figures and toys on display and sale.

One of the most highly anticipated events at rAge each year is the LAN, and last year saw over 2,500 gamers unite their PCs to do virtual battle in casual play, hardcore tournaments (both official and unofficial)

Review: rAge 2012and 53 hours of digital socialising. For competitors looking for a more traditional experience, rAge 2012 was host to its first-ever internationally sanctioned Pokémon tournament.

If anything is certain, it’s that rAge simply gets better every year. As more and more visitors flock to the show floor it’s clear that both the demand for and supply of high-quality digital and traditional entertainment in South Africa is ever-increasing, making rAge the place to be for everyone with even the slightest interest in this diverse and growing industry.

NAG LAN @ rAgerAge will again feature the sleep-depriving three day NAG LAN @ rAge event. This is a wired melting pot of adrenaline-filled gaming in the form of a three-day BYOC (Bring Your Own Computer) NAG LAN. The NAG LAN @ rAge is the biggest gaming LAN in South Africa, with 2,000 gamers connected to the same network for a weekend of pure gaming.

Who attends rAge?This annual three-day event has

become more than a mere tradeshow or convention; it’s become an event that brings local gamers (and non-gamers) together regardless of age, race, gender or platform from all over the country. It’s not uncommon for busloads of gamers to make the trip from Cape Town, Durban, Port

Elizabeth and many other places in South Africa.

From families to casual and hardcore gamers, computer enthusiasts, the youth and technology conscious families, technophobes that need to learn a thing or two and the techno geeks to teach them; all will be at rAge 2013.

With the worldwide gaming industry predicted to grow 9% to a total

worth of US$74 billion this year*, this medium has fast become the ultimate entertainment market, far surpassing all others, including movies and other entertainment mediums combined. Positioned at the forefront of this explosive growth and innovation is the rAge expo. Exhibitors, retailers and developers will be hard pressed to find a more attractive platform with access to this lucrative market. At rAge you can bear witness to the tremendous spending power of the entertainment technology and gaming consumer.

Since its inception in 2002, the really AWESOME gaming expo (rAge) has enjoyed organic growth both in the number of exhibitors and attendees over the years. rAge 2011 saw a record 26,594 expo visitors, growth of 29% from 2010, followed by an increase of 8% in 2012 to 28,930 visitors. The show itself saw an exciting mix of over 80 exhibitors for 2012 ranging from independent artists to local game distributors, and

from computer hardware retailers to major brand names like LG. rAge exposes the ever-growing local gaming community to the latest technological developments, new and pre-released games, the hottest consoles, creative arts learning opportunities, product launches, competitions and giveaways, exclusive presentations by international game developers, and much more.

This annual event, that has never disappointed the tens of thousands of ardent gamers and exhibitors in all its previous years, has become synonymous with the hottest games, all the cutting-edge technology and gadgets as well as popular subculture favourites like the NAG LAN and the Artist’s Alley.

Exhibitors have enjoyed annual attendance growth and will continue to capitalise on the enormous spending power of the technology and gaming consumer. Prospective exhibitors can secure their space at this not-to-be-missed event that dominates the South African gaming industry’s calendar.

Marketing and public relations campaign rAge expo owes its year-on-year growth and success in no small part to the marketing and advertising campaigns executed extensively across print, broadcast, digital, social and outdoor media leading up to the date of the expo. These campaigns are supported by comprehensive public relations, promotions, and branding strategies that

instigate and bolster awareness through the use of established media partnerships. Social networking has received increased marketing focus for the expo in recent years. There has also been a dramatic rise in conventional media coverage during the show including TV (SABC and Soweto TV), radio (Tuks FM), and newspaper (The Star, The Citizen, Beeld).

PC and console gaming, computer hardware and software, overclocking, gaming peripherals, gaming retail, hardware retail, gaming apparel and accessories, local game development studios, media and creative arts colleges, convention artists, graphic art signings, comics, anime, role-playing, collectible card games, digital lifestyle gear, and much more.
