What is the Washington Campus?
• Offers educational programs about public policy issues and processes
• Established in 1978 by public policy and academic leaders
• Board of Directors consists of representatives from top business schools
• Non-profit, non-partisan organization
• The Ross School of Business partners with Washington Campus to bring unique courses to MBAs
Why should you take this course?
• Decisions made in Washington impact business: participation in public policy debates is essential
• Learn how you can promote policy outcomes that support business
• Learn from experienced Washington insiders and share your experience with other U-M students

• Understand how the public policy process works and learn practical ways to get involved
• Learn how legislative and regulatory decisions are made
• Develop sound business strategies that anticipate changes in Washington
Course Content
• Standard sessions include:
• Structure and function of federal government
• Advocacy and lobbying
• Regulations
• Variable sessions related to current events:
• Election outcomes,
• Intellectual property reform,
• Foreign policy, etc...
• BE 688 will focus on health care policy
Program Format
• 8 am – 6:30 pm, early dismissal Friday
• Typically 6 sessions per
day: ~ Lectures with Q&A ~ Panel discussions ~ Computer simulations ~ Site visits
• 1 hour for lunch on your own
LHC 688 Course Deliverables
• Classroom Attendance for all sessions during the week in D.C.
• Exam given during the week in Washington, D.C.
• Group Project due approximately two weeks after your return
• Public Policy Analysis Research Paper - 12-14 pages written individually; due approximately 3 weeks after your return. Requirements to be posted on the CTools site for LHC 688
BE 688 Course Deliverables
• Classroom Attendance for all sessions during the week in D.C.
• Short papers will be completed during the course while in Washington, D.C.
• A final term paper will be due after students return from Washington, D.C.
Program Dates
LHC 688:
BE 688: The course travels to Washington, D.C. May 6–11, 2013.
The course will have a small number of meetings in April, which will be
scheduled to minimize conflicts with other courses.

1) Make sure you can accommodate 3 credits in your Winter 2013 or Spring 2013 schedule. Registering for the course under Spring 2013 will generate a new tuition bill.

Helpful Hints
• Business dress is required
• Bring comfortable shoes for walking
