BREAK FREE

Mental Health and Addiction Tobacco Treatment Program

Quitting smoking is a process and not an event

Break Free is a comprehensive treatment program for tobacco dependence. Clients can access up to 26 weeks of group counselling

and nicotine replacement therapy (or other cessation medications). The first 8 weeks consists of a closed psycho-educational

treatment group followed by an optional 18 weeks of aftercare support.

Quitting smoking takes practice and support. We recognize that everyone’s process of change is unique. Our goal is to create

individual treatment plans that minimize the discomfort of physical withdrawal, build tools for long-term success, and utilize personal

strengths. Adhering to a quit date is not a requirement for participation.

What is nicotine replacement therapy? These are products that help to manage the physical addiction to nicotine. Products available include patch, gum, inhalers, and

lozenges. Also available are cessation medications such as Zyban and Champix.

Criteria for entry: •Over 19 years old with a history of mental health and/or addiction

•Willingness and availability to complete the 8 week treatment group

When are the next groups? Raven Song (2450 Ontario Street) Thursdays, 10-12pm Start date: May 8

New App Helps Youth Manage Anxiety

Do you work with or know a young person who is struggling with anxiety? Are they tired of missing out? There are things youth can do to stop anxiety and fear from taking over. MindShift is an app designed to help teens and young adults cope with anxiety. The app helps them change how they think about anxiety so that rather than trying to avoid it, they can make an important shift and face it.

MindShift will help youth learn how to relax, develop more helpful ways of thinking, and identify active steps that will help them take charge of their anxiety. This app includes strategies to deal with everyday anxiety, as well as specific tools to tackle:

Test Anxiety Perfectionism Social Anxiety Performance Anxiety Worry Panic Conflict

Think of MindShift as a portable coach, helping youth face challenging situations and take charge of their lives. The app is available for free from both the App Store and Google Play. For more information about the app, visit: www.anxietybc.com/mobile-app

MindShift is the work of a joint collaboration between AnxietyBC, a non-profit organization devoted to increasing the public’s awareness and access to evidence-based resources on anxiety disorders, and BC Mental Health & Addiction Services, an agency of the Provincial Health Services Authority.

Beginning February 15, 2013, the provincial government will introduce the BC Services Card,

which will be phased in over a five-year period. The new card replaces the CareCard, can be

combined with the driver’s license and also serves as government-issued identification. All

BC Services Cards will have an expiry date, enhanced security features and most will have a

photograph, which will help to improve patient safety and reduce card misuse.
