“I loved this play…an unsettling Lynchian Nightmare” - Rob Drummond (Playwright)
" A witty, inventive, well written and stylish play performed by an accomplished cast...a triumph, farce and slapstick at its best, scary, hysterical, physically impressive and made all the more effective by Dominic Di Rollo’s disciplined
use of language" - Louise Welsh (Writer in Residence, University of Glasgow)
"A clever breaking of the intellectual fourth wall." - Linda McLean (Playwright)
STaG presents, Edinburgh born director, Dominic Di Rollo’s new play, ‘What’s He Building In There?’
An absurdist dark farce, ‘What’s He Building In There?’ tells the story of a carpenter who is engaged in an
extra-marital affair with his own chair. From a naturalistic beginning the audience is slowly transported
into a surreal world populated with larger than life characters, dark humour and farcical comedy. When
the Carpenter is convinced by his Wife and Friend to attend a job interview in the city the man is thrust
into the social sphere that he has purposefully rejected.
A strikingly unique, sawdust-covered workshop provides the setting for the piece. The action revolves
around the Carpenter’s true love: the chair.
The Company has collaborated with Daniel Mackay, a Glasgow based musician, who has written (in
conjunction with the production) an original musical score. In rehearsal, it was crucial that the sound
became integrated rather than superfluous. In performance, the actors play off the sound and Daniel
improvises accordingly using pedals to create a melodic, and sometimes atonal, landscape for the action.
‘What’s He Building In There?’, winner of STaG’s annual New Works Festival , was selected to make its
Edinburgh Festival Fringe debut by a panel of external judges fronted by Rob Drummond and LindaMcLean (Glasgow based theatre practitioners).
STaG is a self-funded student theatre society based in Glasgow; we collaborate with students and are
passionate about uncovering new up-and-coming young talent and exposing it to the wider theatre
community. We feel that this play with its impressive cast, direction, musical score and original script
fulfills our aims and objectives and hope that Edinburgh audiences and critics alike will agree.
Last year, STaG’s Edinburgh Festival Fringe show ‘A Stone’s Throw’ performed at ZOO Roxy to receive
several
reviews from publications such as Three Weeks, The Herald and The Scotsman. We are verypleased to be working with ZOO Venues again this year.
