The Roman Empire was hugely successful, partly because the Romans were good at nicking other peoples’ ideas and using them to get what they wanted! Have a go at making your own Celtic chainmail key ring, grind Egyptian grain or fi nd out about Greek and Roman Gods and Goddesses. £2 per child.

The festival of the dead dates back to Celtic times, but
we’ve brought it up to date (sort of) as we play Roman pac-man in the garden; watch out for our scary scarecrow and beware – the statues are coming to get you! Come in fancy dress for our prize parade at the end of the night. £3.50 per person, under 3’s free. Sat 7 December
11am – 4pmSaturnalia
Saturnalia is the Roman version of Christmas. We’ll be sharing some Roman food and drink with you, playing games, making Roman presents and rounding things off with a traditional Roman fi ght. And old meets new as there’ll be a visit from Father Christmas too.

Let your little soldier have a taste of life as a Roman legionary. Wave goodbye to Mum and Dad for 25 years and join up to the Roman Legion! Have at go at sword practice and marching then when you leave the army you’ll get a certifi cate. £2 per child.

A slightly different take on Welsh customs and traditions. We’ll be testing your skill at leek tossing or getting you to enter a bara brith eating competition! To be a bit more traditional,
we’ll also be making Welsh cakes and creating felt sheep.

We all know that the Romans had bath houses, but where did the water come from? A weekend of practical experiments exploring how the Romans moved water. Warning: extreme likelihood of getting wet!

Christmas doesn’t always mean Santa Claus and snow. There are many different ways to mark this time of year and some of these customs are as surprising as they are colourful. By Dr Juliette Wood of Cardiff University. £3.50 per person.

Sally Pointer will introduce you to some of the secrets of the well-kept Roman lady. In the second part of this interactive talk, you can have a go at making a Roman lip paint and perfume. This is a fascinating talk and a must for anyone interested in what it would have been like to live in Roman times. £8 per person, all materials included.
