Grab your wand and prepare to hop on your Nimbus 3000, as a stunning exhibition called Illustrating Harry Potter comes to Hannahs at Seale-Hayne (just outside Newton Abbot) this summer (3 July – 25 September). The gallery exhibition at the Seale-Hayne site will showcase original illustrations, sketches, models and final prints from the brand new edition of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, illustrated by Jim Kay.

The spellbinding exhibition has been put together by Seven Stories: The National Centre for Children’s Books in Newcastle (where the exhibition is currently running), and Bloomsbury Children’s Books.

Jim Kay was personally selected by J.K. Rowling to bring her wizarding world alive with his dazzling illustrations. Over the next few years, Jim will be reimagining all seven books, with the first now available in a beautiful hardback edition. “Seeing Jim Kay’s illustrations moved me profoundly, “ enthuses Rowling. “I love his interpretation of Harry Potter’s world, and I feel honoured and grateful that he has lent his talent to it.”

Visitors will be able to pore over intricate sketches and stunning pencil drawings and discover Jim’s complex, creative process from inspiration to final illustration. Best of all, fans will be able to come face-to-face with breath-taking portraits of their favourite characters from Hogwarts… let’s hope they stay in their frames!

Hannahs at Seale-Hayne (just outside Newton

Abbot) is the first venue to host the exhibition, since it opened in Newcastle at the end of 2015. The exhibition will be the in-spiration of a whole summer of magical events, including storytelling, astronomy, illustration classes, dinner theatre, cinema and quidditch lessons (yes it is a real sport!). Visitors will also be able to take part in a themed treasure hunt, visit Diagon Alley (recreated from the illustrations in the book) and even get lost in the unique willow Dragons Maze.

One of the most fun ways of enjoying the exhibition will be to jump onboard The Magic Express. Hannahs has teamed up with South Devon Railway to offer a steam train from Buckfastleigh to Totnes and then a trip up to the exhibition on a London Double Decker Bus. After your visit, you will then be dropped back to Buckfastleigh on the bus. Fun and suprises are promised along the way, and wizarding fancy dress is encouraged.

SOMERSET ROCKS!Demand for tickets to Somerset Rocks has been outstanding with eager fans snapping up tickets to see Status Quo, Will Young and Jools Holland.

Music lovers desperate to be part of this bespoke music event have been purchasing tickets online from ticketline.co.uk and from St. Margaret’s Hospice shops throughout Somerset.

Ticket sales to each of the three shows, billed as Somerset Rocks, have been exceptional and beyond the organiser’s expectations.

Somerset Rocks is a three-evening music event being held at Taunton’s Vivary Park to raise funds and awareness for St. Margaret’s Hospice. It takes place during the August bank holiday weekend (26-28 August 2016) and features Status Quo (Friday 26 August); Will Young (Saturday 27 August); and Jools Holland and his Rhythm and Blues Orchestra (Sunday 28 August).

Ann Lee, Chief Executive of St. Margaret’s Hospice, said:

“With an outstanding line-up confirmed including Status Quo, Will Young and Jools Holland, it’s all systems go now, to deliver a family-fun, festival type atmosphere in Vivary Park, to ensure Somerset Rocks creates a lasting legacy and helps raise awareness of the hospice and the work that we do.”

Wild Swimming

WalksA stunning new guide book to walking and wild swimming across the region has just been published, written by two passionate local authors, Matt Newbury and Sophie Pierce. The unique book features 28 circular walks and dipping spots across Dartmoor and South Devon.

Sophie Pierce grew up in land-locked Oxfordshire, but started the South Devon Wild Swimming Club after getting caught in a rip-tide

during a New Year’s Day dip. She now lives on the edge of Dartmoor and has worked as a news reporter for the BBC for over 20 years. Matt Newbury was born and raised in Devon and is a freelance writer, journalist and marketing expert at Hannahs at Seale-Hayne. He has completed many swimming challenges including escaping from Alcatraz, swimming to the Bestival music festival on the Isle of Wight and representing Great Britain in this year’s ice swimming championships in Poland. Sophie and Matt are also the authors of Beyond the Beach: the secret wild swims of Torbay, which has just been reprinted for the fifth time.

“This has been a real passion project for us” explains Matt “and we are really proud of the results. We’ve had so much fun researching it and doing all of the walks and swims ourselves. They are all mini adventures that encourage you to get out of the house and out

into the open air, discovering lots about the spectacular scenery and natural heritage that surrounds us in this beautiful part of the world. The book also contains some breathtaking photography, that really showcases South Devon at its best and will also make a great gift for people who love the area.

Torbay is proud to host the South Wests only 1.5 km closed road cycle circuit, based at Clennon Valley, Paignton.

The Velopark is open to everyone seven days a week all year round, whether you need to regain your confidence, want a recreational hobby or to become an amateur or professional cyclist. The Velopark enables cycling to be a great activity for all of the family to enjoy together in a safe environment without the dangers of being on a road. ‘A cycle a day, keeps the doctor away’ so by having fun at the Velopark you can be improving your health at the same time.

Don’t worry if you haven’t got your own bike there are plenty to hire for just £4 including a range of Isla and Giant Hybrid bikes. Hire bikes also include Trikes for those with less balance, a Tandem, a hand cycle and recumbent trikes. If your little ones are too small to ride we have single and double trailers available to hire for just £6 including the bike.

Pay and display parking is available on site. Other facilities include toilets close by and cake and coffee kiosk is available (weather dependant). FREE wifi is available on site so you can check in at the Velopark and track your progress

on GPS apps on your mobile phone, join in challenges, share photos and follow friends.

Situated within Dartmoor National Park in the heart of Devon’s Teign Valley, the waterfalls tumble down

ancient rock formations to meet the lakes below, offering some of the most spectacular waterfall

and ancient bluebell woodland scenery in Devon.

A breathtaking sight, described by one visitor as “one of the most magical places on earth ”,

wildlife thrives in the peace and tranquillity that makes the Falls a haven for both adults

and children. Well-marked pathways take you on three scenic walks, suitable for varying ages

and abilities. Our Victorian fern garden at the top of the Falls is a magical hidden treasure of

Victorian landscaping.

We have seven interconnecting lakes. The main Lily Lake has a central island with beautiful purple flowering rhododendrons and provides safe cover for the many Mallard ducks and Canada geese. Clearing of trees has been undertaken at the Falls end of the lake and visitors can now enjoy much enhanced views whilst walking around it. The six lower lakes are linked up with grassy walks and bridges. Planting combinations of fox dogwood, acers, gunnera and pampas grass provide year round texture and colour.

Taking the path leading to the wetlands and lower lakes is one of the most fascinating nature walks in Devon, giving you the opportunity to spot kingfishers, bats, butterflies, wildfowl, dragonflies and our pair of black swans, Dame Margot and Rudolph. The Canonteign bees have an idyllic corner in the old orchard where they busy away making delicious honey. Honey harvesting is done on site and our fresh honey is on the shop shelves usually within 48 hours of collection from the hives. The Pirate Ship climbing structure within the large play area offers rock hold walls, a fireman`s pole and pull up ramps or children can go below deck and create a den. So gather up your treasure chests “me hearties” and let’s set sail! You can even add to the fun with pirate hats and other related items available from our shop.

CaféOur menu offers locally made filo pastry pies, homemade soups, ploughmans, freshly cut sandwiches and jacket potatoes: a wonderful feast for weary and hungry walkers!
